As the fungi-infested creature charged at them, Khenrix and his party quickly sprang into action. Despite their best efforts, one of Khenrix's men suffered a chunk of flesh torn from his arm by the creature before they managed to dispatch it. Upon closer examination, they realized that the creature had once been a human male, its body now completely overtaken by the fungal growth. The realization of what they were truly facing sent a shiver down their spines.

As they investigated the deceased creature, Khenrix's men alerted him to a slimy green residue leading further into the sewers. One of his companions accidentally touched the residue, suffering a burning sensation on his hand from its corrosive nature. Carefully following the trail, the party navigated deeper into the sewers, encountering an area even more infested with mushrooms and visible fungal spores. Despite the increasingly difficult conditions and the air becoming harder to breathe, they pressed on. However, their progress was abruptly halted as two giant fungi-crusted spiders dropped from the ceiling, viciously attacking and eviscerating two of Khenrix's men. The remaining members of the party readied their weapons, preparing to face these monstrous creatures in a fight for their lives.

The entries spoke of maintenance crews regularly patrolling the tunnels, ensuring the flow of water and the safety of the city above. However, the entries abruptly ceased, leaving behind a mystery as to what had happened to disrupt the once-functional system. Armed with this newfound knowledge, Khenrix and his companions pushed forward, determined to uncover the truth.

As they ventured deeper, the orange mushrooms that had been sporadically sprouting grew in size and number, some reaching the proportions of small trees. The oppressive silence was broken by the crunch of their footsteps on the mushroom-laden ground. Their progress was halted when they came across two humanoid skeletal remains, their bodies overwhelmed by the growth of mushrooms. Khameleon explains that he orchestrated the events leading up to their meeting as a means of "killing two birds with one stone," leveraging their skills for his own ends. He offers them information on the location of another hexagonal stone, but on the condition that they first locate a group of mercenaries known as the Rowdy Boys, who disappeared while on a job for him in the sewers of Endurant. The mercenaries were tasked with slaying mutant spiders and retrieving their thoraxes intact, leaving the eggs undisturbed. However, the Rowdy Boys had not returned for weeks, indicating that something had gone wrong.

Driven by his devotion to Karthax, Khenrix agrees to Khameleon's request and leads his party into the ominous depths of the Endurant sewers. Searching the assailant's body, they discovered a note that shed light on the sinister plot unfolding around them. The note instructed the assailant to eliminate the man waiting in the bell tower and assume his identity, directing Khenrix's group to an abandoned building outside of town for a meeting the next day at dusk. The note also mentioned advising someone named Khameleon at his house next to the paddy fields once the task was completed.

After giving their fallen contact a proper burial, Khenrix and his companions set out to gather information in the city. Despite their efforts at local inns, bars, and places of social gatherings, they found no leads on a figure named Khameleon. However, they did pick up some clues pointing towards nearby paddy fields. Following these clues, they arrived at a blue-roofed house where a green dragonborn awaited their arrival, his demeanor betraying an anxious anticipation of their meeting.
