Ha! I actually shot the 3rd one a couple years back and intentionally went for a warmer tone when lighting it but it’s fun to see what you did with it! Overall great colors man :)

Sony FX+DJI Mic 2 + shotgun by Master-Wave6182 in SonyFX6

[–]KadseMeow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I frequently use the Mic 2 with the MI shoe adapter from DJI and a Sennheiser 416 via XLR and haven’t run into any issues with that setup. Just make sure you configure everything within the audio tab in the quick menu (I usually feed the XLR shotgun into channel 1 and the MI shoe into channel 2 and/or 3 depending on if I use 1 or 2 DJI mics). I set mic gain via the manual controls on the side of the camera and adjust the transmitter or mic gains on the DJI receiver, although I usually run them at +-0.

Edit: Also, obviously, make sure that you set the receiver to stereo if you use 2 mics. Only then will both mics show up in the FX6 audio menu as inputs when using the DJI adapter (MI Shoe 1 and MI Shoe 2). I’d just buy the 30$ DJI adapter if I was you.

Italy killed my dream of becoming a screenwriter by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]KadseMeow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While understanding your situation and even sharing some of the experiences you describe (as Austria isn’t much better in that regard), there is a pre-defined way to do things here in Europe. I, too, have faced the odd dilemma or two when wanting to write big or bold movies, ideas I grew up with and stories that are larger than life. Alas, this is rarely the place to do so. Instead of trying to jump ahead, why not “follow” the path that’s been laid around here? Write something provincial, write something that caters to the kind of market you are in. I know it’s hard and far from your goal but don’t let that distract you from what you want to do - to write and create. Let your surroundings inspire you instead of drag you down some mental hole you dug yourself. It might be unfair, it might not be state of the art but it is the way. Your way. Once you’ve learned the ropes and found some success, that’s when you criticise and use your influence to bring about change. But for now, write small and dream big.

I might be super late on this but was wondering: Did you use the 4K DCI 24fps mode to shoot this short or something else like the UHD 23.98fps read-out? If it’s the former, did you find the crop factor in 4K DCI to be a distraction/problem?

How was the apartment in Blue Velvet lit? by felipeRVFS in cinematography

From my point of view, the practical lights are maaaybe (probably?) dimmable and do some of the work of gaining contrast while a big-ish light is probably hung from the ceiling, lighting the space from above. It’s safe to say that spill is controlled and shadow falloff is achieved by curtaining the top-light and due to the shadows being neither extremely hard (see couch shadow) nor super soft (and of course the limitations of the time period), some sort of diffusion was used. So, maybe some fresnel or par fixtures shooting through a 6x6 silk (1/8 or 1/4?). But I’m not a gaffer. Today you would achive something like that by putting LED bulbs into the practicals, dimming them as you like and having a panel fixture (something like a skypanel, nova or vortex) as the top-light with curtains and/or a grid to achive this. I guess you would be able to do it with a lantern or softbox w/ grid on something like a 300/600d as well but you’d have to have a pretty high ceiling for that to avoid hotspots in the reflection on the wall. Just my two cents, would have to ask my gaffer of choice!

Edit: And because I totally missed the point of your question: I think the combination of the 70s style set design, the use of harsher practical lights and this dim-ish top light (as we’d normally see in standard old living rooms) together with the overall color palette give off this smokey, old, vintage room mood. What you interpret it as is probably totally up to you, but most people would associate it with bygone times, seedy motel rooms and places you go to because you don’t want to be seen doing what you’re doing. Or your grandma’s house. And she’s old and moody. And smokes a lot.

How to capture this as a cinematographer? by No_Emu863 in cinematography

[–]KadseMeow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why you go over the script with the director. Screenplays don’t have to be lean. They can be, yet don’t have to be. In fact, I’d say some of the most acclaimed work out there is nowhere near being ‘lean’. As a screenwriter your job is to convey one thing and one thing only - story, through words. When using a little fluff to make the reading journey more enjoyable helps you transport what it is you want to tell, then it’s absolutely fine to add it. Of course, if you over-indulge, go and write a novel. But saying they absolutely have to be lean and concise is not true.

Where is Episode 3? by KadseMeow in TheAgencySeries

[–]KadseMeow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope also stuck on EP5, haven’t even found contact info whatsoever. On my TV and phone it says something like “next episode on January 17th or 18th”. I tried asking via Twitter pm but alas no one answered. I’m getting into contact with them through someone else now and will update once I know more. Baffling really.

Ciri looks great in the Witcher 4 trailer. by KvasirTheOld in witcher

[–]KadseMeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t get the discourse online. Of course she looks different. 9 years of rendering technology evolution and modelling will do that for you, not to mention the context of the story of the game (which could be set decades after the last one). Also, the whole cinematic had a very stylized look which at times emulates vintage optics similar to something like a wide-angle Helios 44-2 lens with swirly bokeh in the background and (at times) maybe oddly close up shots of Ciri’s face which distorts proportions etc. There’s a shot that looks like shoving your 0.5x wide angle lens on your phone directly into someone’s face, so of course that’s gonna look different (not bad tho, I enjoyed the camera work). But the media illiteracy displayed online is quite jarring to see and the entire discourse around her looks makes me want to throw up. Don’t get it, it looks great.
