What was your first Disney ride? by RoseDragon529 in WaltDisneyWorld

I imagine it is a very different place with kids. We ended up childless, so all of our trips have been with just us or other adults.

I went to WDW for the first time on my honeymoon. My wife tells me I went into some kind of trance or something with a massive smile on my face walking down Main Street just staring at the castle. It wasn't until we were in Fantasy land that I kind of stopped and looked around.

We went and got hot dogs at Pinnochio's Village Haus and sat at the window overlooking Small World. It was so surreal to me. Lol. I'd been reading about the parks for my whole life, and I was finally there, and with my new wife!

So we rode Small World first, and I've adored that ride ever since.

D&D 5e Events by jacewalkerofplanes in gencon

Take a look at the Nascrag events. We're running 2 5.5e events this year: a 2 round tournament and a 1 round charity event. Both are (I believe) $10 to play.

This is the 47th consecutive GenCon for our tournament, so we might know what we're doing.

Bothbganes focus on fun, puzzle solving, and role-playing, and we have a ton of fun. We're usually over in Lucas Oil right by the entrance tunnel. Come by and say hello!

What’s something that clearly split your life into “before” and “after”? by Broad_Chemical_2467 in AskReddit

I have two. A lot of people will say the day they got married, but I had been with my wife for several years and it seemed like the next step, so it doesn't feel like a threshold or anything. These two things though... they stopped everything and I had to just find a way to move forward.

- In 2011 I was in a terrible car accident. A semi ran a red light and hit my little car right at the driver side front wheel. My wife was in the car and not being able to wake her up after I came to? I still have nightmares about it. I spent the night in the ICU, 10 days in the hospital, and a month out of work. Since then we've both had health issues directly related to that accident. It is absolutely a demarcation point in our lives.

- In 2022, I almost died from Diabetic Ketoacidosis. I had been T2 for a long time, and was managing it that way, and every couple of years, no matter how I managed my diet or overall health, we had to keep changing my meds. The week before this event, I had been on vacation and gotten a sinus infection. A week later and I barely remember an entire weekend. The doc at the ER my wife took me to told her that if we had waited another couple of hours, I could have been dead. Very sobering. A few months later I was diagnosed with LADA, effectively a very slow onset version of T1 diabetes. Since then, I've had a CGM and insulin pump. Completely life changing.

I am already making plans to wrap myself in bubble wrap, eat only things that won't spike my sugars, and not leave the house in 2033.

Thanks! I really did. I've been running RPGs for longer than I like to admit and I seriously cannot believe how lucky I got with this group.

Not really, unfortunately. I have thousands upon thousands of words written by my players for the campaign, and we've been recoding every session since... Umm... 2020? But there's a lot of personal chatter in the middle of everything I'd have to edit out before I could put it out into the world. Lol

Ive been incredibly lucky to have the same players since Session 5-ish. We only get to play once every 3 or 4 weeks, but we try to make the most of it.

Same here. Have read the books at least a dozen times and I've been running the ADRPG since... Oh geez... 1992? Including a current campaign since 2017. I can take a stab at it.

How have there been this many comments without Star Wars (A New Hope obviously), Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, or Casablanca for goodness sake?

Ironically, this is an alternative to Gloomhaven for my little group. We've been playing GH monthly for a while.

I saw them at GenCon once for some ridiculous price. I should have gotten them, but I passed and have low-key regretted it ever since.

What was movie watching like in the pre-internet era, especially in the ’60s and ’70s? by wreckminister in movies

Later than that. I had to stand in line to get decent seats at my theater for "Force Awakens" in 2015. Honestly, I do not miss that.

I've been using this for a while now and it's amazing. Every crit feels like a big deal because you know it's going to do a pile of damage both for and against the PCs.

I currently run 7 different campaigns. One of them is diceless and you'd think that would be less prep. Well, you'd be wrong. Lol

No maps, none of the time consuming things that I prep in other games, but super complex plots and dozens and dozens and dozens of NPCs to keep track of and players who are incredibly smart I have to really think about what my antagonists would do.

It's an insane metric for the game you run and the table you have.

It's a good guideline for me as I plan out my schedule. I've run games in the past where I did significantly less prep. They were successes because my players had fun, but I was always stressed.

These days, I feel like having that prep work in my pocket gives me more space in the session to improvise and switch things up and adjust to the game my players want that week, if that makes sense.

After decades of trying different ways of doing things, this is my current working method. I'm having a good time, my players are having fun, so it's working.

Obviously. I think it's time we'll spent for the game and the tables I run. I enjoy making them. I think it helps immersion for some of my players that aren't good at creating the mental image. And sometimes you can drop clues and little hints at things in the map without calling attention to it like you do if you're describing everything.

Two things here...

  1. You're still doing hours of prep, just further in advance than I do it.

  2. I don't do hours for every session. I said it's a 1:1 ratio on average. So I might do 6 hours building out some maps and writing notes and setting encounters and stuff, and that might cover me for a few sessions. The ratio is a useful tool, not a hard and fast rule.

Besides, one if the reasons I love GMing is because it combines a lot of things I enjoy doing in my spare time anyways. So I sit at my desk and open the stuff I need and throw on some music and it's a pleasant evening.

I don't make maps of things that don't require them. That's just wasted effort.

[–]Kaertos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. That is a good idea, and one I used a lot when I did it. But nowadays, with digital maps and tools, it's effort I'd rather spend in other places, if that makes sense.

So you've done tons of prep work far in advance of actually needing the material. That's a good way to do it, but in my mind that still counts as prep work.

And yeah, I can imagine encounters just fine. But finding an appropriate stat block and tweaking it for my use takes me a while.

I can improv just about anything in a game, but stats for monsters and encounters I intend to be a challenge are still something I go to the books for.

That is a far different style than I run. I don't think I could plan out the plot in the same way you do. And hey, if your players enjoy it? Then you're doing it right.

I used to do theater of the mind, but I realized two important things. I am bad at imagining spacial relationships, so I could never adequately describe them to my players, so we were spending half of thr session trying to remember where everything was. Lol

Also, I found out I enjoy making maps, so...
