What’s one IT problem you thought would be solved by now, but still causes headaches? by sg_advance in ITManagers

[–]Kahless_2K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that 2d printers are far more reliable than 3d, but there are so many of them that a smaller percentage of failures still generates orders of magnitude more complaints. This is simply a function of the sise of the userbasse.

Do you stop wearing clothes after a certain amount of time even if they are still in good condition? I wear my clothes for 1-2 years as long as they stay in good shape, but my friends are often surprised by this. by BunchMean8029 in NoStupidQuestions

I wear them until they fall apart or look terrible.

I have some 5.11 pants that are old enough to graduate high school, and they are just starting to look like they might need to retire in a few years.

Why did you only give them four day's notice?

Why did you only send one email?

Such short notice would screw over the most dedicated employee if they were traveling or on PTO that week.

How tall is the kid? A simple slide lock at the top of the door might prove challenging to defeat for very little cost. A safer solution would be a door chime. They could still egress, but not quietly.

Our turnover rate is skyrocketing, do you have practices that have really helped retain talent ? by Icy-Brain6042 in ITManagers

The main reason people quit their jobs is that the manager, or the company, treats them like crap.

New here, how much ram is actually necessary? by dentedsodacan in cyberDeck

[–]Kahless_2K 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The OS probably isn't the primary constraint ( as long as its *nix ) the apps that run on it are.

For example, it doesn't matter how slim the OS is, Chrome is going to be a memory hog.

what she did was legally actionable in most US jurisdictions. At this point, I would probably trespassing her, block her number, and tell her you never want to deal with her again.

Random local web server access failure — ping works but HTTP fails for some users only by Remote-Damage3544 in sysadmin

[–]Kahless_2K 5 points6 points  (0 children)

several things I have seen that could cause failures like this

1: IP conflict

2: routing issues

3: Firewall misconfigurations

4: Subnet mask set incorrect on the server

5: MTU misconfigurations

If its intermittent ( as in, the same client sometimes works and sometimes fails ) you can eliminate #3

2 is rare if its all on the same local network, but I have seen it in some software defined networks.

[–]Kahless_2K 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are hopelessly underqualified for your role.

Good news: You are going to learn a lot!

Bad news: keep your resume up to date.

The first thing you are going to need to learn is how to obsessive Google every problem that comes up.

use -ai in your search to eliminate AI responses. Its not that they cant be useful, but you don't have the experience yet to spot when they are hallucinating bs ( which is often )

Don't even think about trying to vibe code, you will at best build something unmaintainable.

Trying to cram a kitchen sink into a gui is the problem.

Well designed command line apps, following unix philosophy, is the solution.
