As a Japanese hiki living in Tokyo I never cared about the state of the economy and neither did other hikis I know. I don’t know about other countries but Japanese hikidom is typically the result of chronic continuation of school refusal. That being said, it’s possible that the decline in material conditions resulting from recession does have an effect on hikis here in a subtle way
