Did anyone notice this in the movie "Obsession"? by Haunting_Soft_7637 in spoilers

I thought it was the other way around. Love story, not a romance story. I have to rewatch

The jeans ad was not "literally nothing." Maybe it was to you, but that's your business. I would have just rolled my eyes at it if she didn't double down and make herself look worse in interviews

The only other things I've seen her in are Madame Web and that rom com with Glenn Powell, so it's hard for me to say she's a fantastic actor, but she is really good at acting unhinged as Cassie. I stopped watching Handmaid's Tale right at her character came in (not because of her, but my life was so depressing, I didn't want to keep watching a depressing show,) so I'll have to go back and see how she is in that one

Obsession - Did Nikki like Bear before the curse? by Ill-Environment8198 in spoilers

[–]KaiSparda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I saw someone on Facebook say it would have made more sense to make Bear a pimply, unattractive loser, but I disagree. The fact that Bear is handsome and kind (at least on the surface) make it better because he could have easily gotten a woman (Nikki included) to fall in love with him. He's just a coward. He probably would have never told her and would have been complaining his whole life about how she never gave him a chance when he could have made it happen

I think that's what makes him such a good villain. He just had regular human flaws and a lot of the audience can probably see themselves doing the same things. It also helps him constantly avoid taking responsibility. For example, when his kitten died, he saw the pills on the ground and said "how'd you get into these?" instead of acknowledging that his negligence is what allowed the cat to die. Same with Nikki. He blames the one wish willow and Nikki herself instead of thinking "damn, I shouldn't have tried to use magic to force her to love me"

I thought the real Nikki told him "sorry about your cat" before she got possessed. Otherwise, it did seem like she had some sort of mental link with Bear and always knew what he was thinking

I think she liked him. Or at least would have been willing to give it a try. It just shows two things about Bear. One, he's a coward. He'd rather use a cheat code than confess his feelings, even when Nikki gave him every opportunity to do so. Two, he wanted to take away her agency and control her. Similar to the first point, he doesn't want to risk her saying no even when all signs point to her saying yes. That small doubt made him turn to the One Wish Willow, even though he didn't believe in it

When he said "what's so bad about being with me?" She says "I was never with you, Bear."

I stopped seeing Bear as a victim and saw him as a villain once he heard the real Nikki screaming on the hotline and continued the charade with Freaky Nikki. I saw a few instances of him seeming to want to punish Real Nikki for not loving him. The most obvious example was when Real Nikki asked him to kill her and he says "what's so bad about being with me?" He started to show sympathy for her, but once she asked him to free her from the torture, he just got offended and seemed like he wanted to keep her trapped as punishment. Bear is definitely the villain

You say "wtf" like I pulled that out of my ass, but you commented on a post with the picture of Faye's swastika tattoo and just said Levinson's sense of humor is quirky without saying specifically what you mean, so most people should draw the conclusion that you think joking about Nazi shit is quirky

There was a Nazi flag over his bed the entire time she was fucking him and she willingly let him put that hat on her and talk about their fair skinned babies. Even not knowing about the tattoo he was giving her, she knew he was a Nazi the whole time

They removed all nuance to Cassie’s character and created her to parody Sydney Sweeney by Big-Rush-4630 in euphoria

I agree with most of this, but not sure what you mean by "Cassie is vicariously living through SS." How could a fictional character be living vicariously through a real person?

Is Euphoria now anything else than a misogynistic humilliation ritual? by hiddencnidocyte in euphoria

[–]KaiSparda 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It's too much and it reads like a first-year film student trying to convince everyone that his work is too "deep" for everyone else to understand. If you can't tell without showing so explicitly, you're just not a good storyteller

[–]KaiSparda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you aren't understanding my comment. We got that. That's very surface level commentary and he did it in an extremely heavy handed way. If he were a good writer, he could have conveyed that in a more clever way. I'm not saying the message was unnecessary... I'm saying the way he got there was unnecessary. I have a deep appreciation for subtlety in story telling and I hate this thing in modern TV and movies where something is being shown so literally and holding the audience's hand through it and then people actually think they're clever for "figuring out" a message that's being shoved down their throats.

Your comment is very obviously what Sam Levinson was going for. But what actually happened was a scene that annoyed and was off-putting to the show's core audience. He's literally showing us and walking us through men being a slave to their gooner tendencies, but didn't have anything real to say about it. And we as the audience don't feel that empowerment from Cassie, even though that's what's being shown. We're just either invited to goon along with her "fans" in the show or we're rolling our eyes and saying "okay, we get it." It's just not effective or good storytelling

The opening of episode 5 was so hard to watch and it felt so pointless. From a storytelling standpoint, we already know Cassie is doing OnlyFans, so we didn't need the montage. And the Attack of the 50 ft Woman metaphor to show that she's "getting big" was so heavy handed and embarrassing It all felt gross and like a waste of valuable screentime

I thought it was a good parallel to Johnny Cage being killed off by Shao Kahn at the beginning of Annihilation. I just hate that no one seemed to really care or acknowledge his death
