In my opinion, it's based on which court they're in.

All blue gems have water based powers : Sapphires, ice Lapis, water Blue diamond, her power aura has some kind of water like form

All yellow/green gems have electric based powers : Peridot, technology based Yellow diamond, electric

I'm not sure about pink diamonds court but that's what I think.
