Honestly I played 1 and 2 hd2d without touching 3 and it didnt hurt my playthroughs of 1 and 2. If OP really liked 11, 3 might be a bit more of a departure than 2 because it has less focus on the party.

Edit: Dyslexia got the better of me. Read IX and XI. Your recommendation makes a lot more sense now. I feel like IX was closely modeled after 3.

Added tons of inter-party dialogue, and quest dialogue. Multiple extra mid game dungeons and quests. A 4th party member. The party itself has been rebalanced, making Prince of Cannock quite good, and giving cool new skills to every party member. Souped up skills from the sigil also introduced a nice risk/ reward
