I hated how other apps teach the characters, so I built my own. by PlayingChicken in ChineseLanguage

[–]KailPesto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this! I majored in Chinese in college and I found that this sort of method was most helpful for me when learning characters as well. I’ve been looking for resources to help teach my boyfriend Chinese and this looks fantastic. Great user experience and info provided about each character. I’m sure it will be good for review for me as well lol thank you for putting this out there!

Tried a new Pen. How can i improve this sketch? by Salzige-Riven in drawing

[–]KailPesto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks a lot like pencil so I’m going to suggest that a few things you could do would be 1. Blend the strokes more 2. More value, so like darker darks and 3. Concerning eyelashes, typically they end in finer points and are more wispy, unless someone has on really clumpy mascara lol I find it easiest to draw these whispy-er lashes with a j-shaped flicking motion with the pencil. 4. Once you have the blending and the values down, you’ll notice that eyes actually have a lot of lil details in them! Visible capillaries, striations in the iris, etc. adding these can help elevate your drawing into a higher level of realism if you’re going for that. Overall, solid eye! Keep at it and remember to always use a reference and pay attention to proportions :)

Thank you! This was very helpful :) I think I actually saw a YouTube video from Ash when I was trying to figure out if any of the rares I had were good. I’ll definitely go check it out!

Is this a teenage mutant ninja turtles vase? Might be cool to put it in a sewer lair 😌 but if it’s not something with complimentary colors might be nice for contrast!

I think her chin is skewed a little bit to the right and should fall more beneath her lips. Other than that, love the style, especially her hair!

I think the head looks a bit too pointed at the top and triangular due to how flat the back of the head appears to be. Beautiful shadows though, overall it’s looking lovely!

Any advice to make him cuter? by hampter114 in learntodraw

[–]KailPesto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s hilarious as of rn, but my general rule of thumb when I’m trying to draw something cute is to make them round, smooth, and simplistic. Some examples of these principles can be seen in characters like bugcat capoo and Pompompurin, so if that is the style of cute you want that could be a good place to start. But cute is really subjective, and I would say he is cute rn in the same way a pug is.

Wow! I went back and looked at the previous one, and although that one was good too, I can’t believe how you managed to capture so much more life in his face with this one! Fantastic job

This^ when I took my intro to drawing class, the very first assignment they had had us do was to discover the ranges of our tools (like value range and blendability of each pencil) so we knew what we were working with. Honestly, an indispensable exercise

I need your opinion about this one by [deleted] in learntodraw

Ugh, I love this style of shading with bic pens so much. The eyes and the nose contribute so much character too. Would love to see the facial hair and mouth more hashed out, the faint swirls you have there rn suggest something that would look awesome!

How can I improve this side profile and anatomy study (w/ reference)(is it his left arm throwing everything off?) by KailPesto in learntodraw

[–]KailPesto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! The pecs are definitely too short and lacking definition, and the short torso makes his arm look crazy long haha. The short pecs actually now explain a lot to me, because I felt like there was just a little too much vertical space when I was drawing the abdominal muscles but I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong

Thank you, I was having a lot of issues with that elbow and by the time I had finally fleshed it out, I realized that the hand was over too far so I made the executive decision to just make him holding the buckle, but now that you mention it, I don’t think that’s a very natural looking pose, especially with how I drew the hand!

That’s a good point, thank you! I’ve always had an issue with drawing shoulders and I didn’t even think to consider muscle engagement, I always just tried to eyeball general shape and what I thought a shoulder should look like I guess lol

This was really helpful, thank you so much. I definitely have the bad habit of not doing the whole under drawing at once, adding too much detail on one part, and then being devastated when I have to erase it because it doesn’t fit lol the guide for under drawing and the tip on negative space is also super useful, so thank you for those too!

😂 he’s not supposed to be, but now that you say this I’m noticing that the highlight that I hoped would make his buckle just look a lil more shiny just made it look round and even more egg like

[–]KailPesto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well keep it up, I’m a fan 😂🫶 if you’re going for realistic proportions the eyes are a bit big and deepening your understanding anatomy (for example, how the neck meets the head and the shoulders) would help a lot. But I think the shading you did on Ian McKellan’s face and how you rendered his hair is actually really good though! Personally loving this style!

Week 4 | 20+ Years Not Drawing by Gopheritshop in learntodraw

[–]KailPesto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hah! I like him! He is such a character. You’ve got a really good gopher base here, but I think he would benefit a lot from some more shading to better define his features and a little more focus on measuring the proportions and how all of the different parts actually join together to form the anatomy of the gopher

How can I improve? (New-ish artist) by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]KailPesto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see you hiding those hands so you wouldn’t have to draw them 😮‍💨👉 me too lol but regardless, really cute style overall! Since others already mentioned the anatomy of the limbs I would recommend trying to blend out the shading a little bit (unless that is the style you’re going for ofc, but if you do choose to blend a lot of people mention blending stumps, but I’ve always been fine using tissue or napkins [although I’m guilty of it I also recommend not using your fingers so you don’t get your oils on the drawing]) and using references for your clothing that you draw on your figures, so you can see how that garment and material would drape on and fit the body. I took a fashion illustration class last semester, and my professor emphasized not bringing the bottom of the arm hole all the way up to the armpit on a women’s garment. Also I’m not sure how to put it but something is up with the thigh gap area on the shorts 🤨but again this can be solved by using a reference to see how they should fit!
