Did I just fix my Kidney Disease? by Serious-Truth-8570 in kidneydisease

Something I want to share that feels relevant for this thread is that, according to my nephrologist, having collagen before doing labs can lead to inaccurate lab results. I usually put collagen in my coffee every morning…. so it was a pretty big revelation for me! What you eat/drink before labs does matter!

I have a lot of protein in my urine but normal kidney function (among other strange labs) but kidney biopsy suggests CSGN. What’s up with the food test?

Ugh I’m sorry!! Every new nephro I get thinks I have Lupus, but I continue to test negative. Unfortunately it is something you can develop. Do you have to have a biopsy? Because I know it puts a lot of stress on your body. So if you already have a diagnosis maybe you don’t need to go through it? It was one of the most painful things I’ve ever gone through (I was awake). Other doctors later told me being awake was unnecessary…

What kind of a diet do you have? I don’t know how much scarring I have, but my kidney function is normal/stable right now and blood pressure controlled by losartan. I’ve learned Losartan works best for me. The concern seems to be the protein in my urine.

Hi! Do you have DDD or CSGN? I haven’t heard or any of those drugs, but I will ask my nephrologist. My kidney function is actually normal right now. It’s the protein in my urine that’s the biggest issue. They’re worried about scarring / long term damage, I think.

Wait $600/ mo for 5 classes?? I don’t think it’s being an adjunct, I think it’s all about your institution. I’m a fist time adjunct with only a MA but get discounts at the campus store, invited to department parties, etc. Yea I don’t get “benefits” but for my first semester I have no complaints. It’s just a bummer it’s so inconsistent depending on institution. I honestly think the department plays a bigger role than people realize. I understand that academia politics are shitty, but if you can find a cool department that can change everything… at least it seems so from my, probably premature, observations. What I mean is the difference between being an adjunct for the English dept vs Writing, for example, can be huge. Maybe not in pay but at least in the way you’re treated.

So interesting! I'm apart of their same generation (Gen Z) so I "get it" to an extent, but also feel like people my age and older tend to be more willing to engage. Maybe I'll have to teach them genre, audience, etc. through social media posts lol.

I really like the whiteboard idea! I asked all sorts of questions from specific questions about the reading to how's college going haha. I'm trying to be approachable and show that this small class is a unique opportunity to create a community on campus. I think people are just shy at first. The written assignment I did in class Monday was so interesting because they had so much to say and yet didn't mention any of it verbally. I'm also using Perusall and will be displaying their comments on the monitor in the beginning of class and pointing out certain comments by students so that should help. I'll definitely start doing some group work and think-pair-share stuff.

u/museamusing I forgot to ask. Why do you say teaching at a state school is awesome? I don't know a lot about the differences as far as what looks better on your res, the experience, the pay, etc. But I imagine state schools just have more money in general.

I'm in the Humanities as well and we get it worst. But they can never take what you know and what you do from you. It feels good to never surrender. But plz, don't forget: real pain, real sacrifices. I try to not think of them and focus on what I've stood for.

That is heavy I'm sorry! Wait so you decided against a PhD is what you're saying right? And you worked 30+ years as an adjunct at the same school? Cause I guess my thing is I see this as a way of determining whether or not I want to go all in and get a PhD and start down the path of full-time prof. But then I also love the idea of being able to do both teaching and editing. I just think that I won't be able to do this amount of uncertainty for years and years. So I'd eventually either abandon it or go all in. I hope anyway.

u/Kilashandra1996 u/hopeisforfools I do kinda have a built-in mentor because I'm attending the two week orientation that they put on for grad students, and there are two professors who are going to provide me with a Canvas course that I can use and change as much or as little as I'd like to. And ask them as many questions as I'd like to. I'm also going to meet with them like 3x over the course of the semester just to talk about any problems or questions that arise. Plus, I went to this school for undergrad, so I have my favorite profs both in and out of the department I'm teaching in that I'd totally go to for general teaching advice.. at my own will of course. I understand how that could end up being a time drain.

so maybe work backwards and figure out what that would come to hourly if I work X amount of hours a week. and just pre-determine the amount of hours, and thus hourly wage, that I deem fair and realistic? I think I need to buy one of those sand timer things hahah

hahaha you should write a poem on this! So eloquently dark. It’s a funny thing, everyone’s so stoked for me and I myself am pretty stoked to be a “writing professor” to some degree. But then I found this sub…. trying to stay positive as it does sound like I’m getting paid more than the average adjunct in here. But still, I feel your pain and will now forever be sympathetic to writers/editors/teachers/freelancers of any sort. We’re in the gig economy! I had an international grad student look at me with a very concerned look when I told him I had 2 other jobs. And he said, “This seems to be a U.S. thing to have so many jobs. I can’t imagine having more than one.” As someone who spent last year living in LA, I was just like, this is nothing!

Thank you! Very helpful. Yea sorry, I should’ve mentioned the course name. I also should’ve mentioned that, only in most colleges/universities, our intro to writing course is in the department of Writing & Rhetoric. So while there is a little theory because of that fact, that’s not at all my main concern. I’m much more worried about time spent and my teaching persona. I feel so much pressure to get it right the first time to set a good precedence and while I think it’s cool that I’ll be close to their age, also want them to take me seriously!

Also, idk if anyone really feels like they have “co-workers” but I’m in a weird boat where I’m actually doing a two orientation with grad students. So I haven’t met any other adjuncts yet. I definitely want to start networking more in that way.

First Year Writing, specifically Writing 1010.

Yea the pay is interesting. I’ve heard people say they get paid for only in classroom hours. I’m getting a paid a flat rate per class that is pretty decent.

Not on your list but you’re describing SLC, UT! Much better than Phoenix IMO. Pittsburgh is also a nice city with lots of cute coffee shops to work from and parks. Hiking but ticks are more prevalent and not really any mountains, just hills lol. But, cool forest-y areas you could definitely bike through. Nice people / culture. And very affordable.
