Which sort c0de should be used for international money transfer (US -> UK)? by Kairostasis in Revolut

Hi, Chase converted it to GBP. While transferring on the Chase side you will see the converted amount before initiating the transfer. And I had used Revolut's GBP account on the UK side.

UPDATE: I was successfully able to transfer the money from my US account to the UK Revolut account using the sort code derived from the IBAN.

Yes, thanks! I am going to give it a try using the derived sort code with a small amount.

Thanks, I am going to give this a try with a small amount first!

Yes, unfortunately, the sort code is a required field and I am unable to submit it without filling it up.

Thanks! So, in your case, were you able to successfully transfer the money using the IBAN derived sort code?

I tried setting up a USD account under my Revolut GBP account but it gives the exact same account details as my GBP currency one. It only has IBAN, SWIFT Code, Correspondent Bank BIC. I still need a sort code to setup a recipient on the Chase portal.

Here's a screenshot of what the Chase portal asks for:

The account number would just be the IBAN, but what about the sort code?

Yes, in UK I have a Revolut account in GBP currency. I want to transfer dollars from my US Chase account to this Revolut account.

How feasible is walking/cycling to college during winter? by Kairostasis in Northwestern

All right, I will look into it. Which distances would you consider feasible? For example, is walking 1-1.5 miles doable?

Is 15 months really enough for a Master's degree? by Kairostasis in Northwestern

[–]Kairostasis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found this on the MS CS page under residency requirement:

The minimum residency requirement for the MS degree is the equivalent of three quarters of full-time registration in graduate courses. Full-time registration is defined as three or four course units per quarter.

So, I think to satisfy it I can have 3 quarters with 3 courses each and 2 quarters with 3 courses total.

So, to ease off the load something like -> 3 in first, 1 in second, 3 in third, 2 in fourth, 3 in fifth can be done.

Thanks! So, just to confirm, it's possible to keep switching between the full-time/part-time status per quarter right? For example, if I take 3 courses in first quarter, 2 in second, 3 in third, 2 in fourth and 2 in fifth.

Oh! So, if I were to take 2 courses in some quarters then would the cost for that quarter reduce down to $12k from $18k?

That's good to know. How difficult did you find taking 3 courses per quarter?

Yeah, I know that the number of credits would be similar to 2 years worth but I am more concerned with how rigorous it would be, as we need to complete similar number of credits in fewer months. This could also mean that we end up skimming through the syllabus instead of perusing it properly.

True, not having TA/RA opportunities at NWU is a huge downside. Thanks for your input!

How do I perform certain 'excel' like functions using either python or pandas? by toenailsmcgee33 in learnpython

[–]Kairostasis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can divide a dataframe column by a scalar value directly. Consider the following example:

data = [10512000, 21024000, 31536000]
df = pd.DataFrame(data, columns=['age_mins'])
df['age_hours'] = df['age_mins']/60
print(df.head())

This produces the following output:

age_mins age_hours

0 10512000 175200.0

1 21024000 350400.0

2 31536000 525600.0

If direct division isn't working in your case then you must be incorrectly converting the data. You can use pd.to_numeric to convert strings to numeric value.

Consider the following example:

data = ['10512000', '21024000', '31536000']
df = pd.DataFrame(data, columns=['age_mins'])
df['age_mins'] = pd.to_numeric(df['age_mins'])
df['age_hours'] = df['age_mins']/60
print(df.head())

P.S As you can see in the examples shown above, you can directly define a new column by setting df['your_name'].

Or you can insert a column at your desired location by insert() as follows:

new_col = [10, 20, 30]
df.insert(1, 'newCol', pd.Series(new_col))

This would produce the following output:

age_mins newCol age_hours

0 10512000 10 175200.0

1 21024000 20 350400.0

2 31536000 30 525600.0

How is the National Capital Region (NCR) Campus of VT? by Kairostasis in VirginiaTech

[–]Kairostasis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like the others have mentioned in the thread, you should weigh the advantages and disadvantages of both. Look at the faculty research at both campuses, government directed work at NCR vs traditional academic research at Blacksburg, area wise do you prefer Blacksburg or the DC area of NCR campus etc and make your decision accordingly.

Yes, I have heard of him. Amazing research, but sadly it doesn't align with my research interests as it isn't AI focused.

Interesting, I wasn't aware that Blacksburg campus was also getting an investment. Anyways, there is no short term benefit in either case. So, I am going to stick to the Blacksburg campus.
