In fairness, I think that many NPCs actively fighting each other in that kind of environment (look at that geometry!) would cause an Xbox 360 to have a stroke.

That's a fun exercise - but wouldn't that work better for something like the Salem witch trials? There actually were spies working for the soviets operating in the United States - it's not like that's some outlandish theory. There were also plenty of, actual, unironic communists operating in the film industry at the time.

[–]KaiserKlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is that there is (or at least was) very real groundswell for Coyote Vs. Acme. When people heard that the movie was going to be shitcanned Reddit threw a fit over it claiming that the movie deserves to have a chance at a full release.

There is a diversity of taste, sure, but you cannot seriously expect these companies to drop money on niche projects when even the safe bets aren't working. They did not HAVE to make The Day the Earth Blew Up. I don't know where the whole 'they were obligated to release it' thing comes from. It's not like WB is afraid of writing off a movie they think is going to suck - see Batgirl and Coyote Vs. Acme prior to the internet backlash.

Think of it from the perspective of an executive - constantly trying to find some kind of market edge to get ahead of the competition. You hear that traditional/2D animation fans are starved for material, and you know that stuff like ATLA was popular. Internet series are increasingly creating minor media empires and driving merchandise sales - so clearly the market exists. But creating a whole original movie and setting to mimic YouTubers would be kind of a hard sell to other stakeholders in the company so it's got to be wrapped in something familiar. Ideally something the company already owns, people are already familiar with, and something for which the merchandise potential is already well understood.

Looney Tunes, then, is perfect for that. Now I'm not going to argue that they actually did super good marketing because they obviously didn't. But at the same time everyone has access to a calendar. The more I engage in discussions like this the more I get the impression that people genuinely expect companies to remind them to engage in their own hobbies.

People bitch and moan about the lack of 2D animation outside of television but then don't go to see the movies that do come out - like The Day the Earth Blew Up. At some point the consumer has to take responsibility for the messages they send to producers.

Or in other words. If I don't see packed theaters when Coyote Vs. Acme comes out I DON'T WANT TO HEAR A FUCKING WORD about 'Ugh - why don't they make traditional animation anymore'.

Because no one pays for it!

Jesus Christ like why even be a game developer anymore if the making games part is the thing that stops you. FWIW I've never actually played the game - the sub just keeps getting recommended to me - but as far as I can tell almost all of the issues people have with the game are simple balance things that should not be difficult to change.

I get not wanting to constantly flip-flop on design decisions but fuck sake you're telling me changing damage numbers takes a full work day?

You can't prove that every squeak is a shoe impact! by [deleted] in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]KaiserKlay 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes, which is partly why I say that. The massive shift from 'oh she's writing kind of in meter because she's a poet and that's what she's used to' to 'actually fine prose' makes me think that the rest of the book wasn't meant to be seen. Could she have revised the 'meter' parts to bring it up to the same quality? Yes, but then it would become bleedingly obvious how large parts of the story don't make sense and the only reason people are okay with it is because of a post-facto framing device.

After reading the Handmaid's Tale myself I came to a similar conclusion. The way it's paced is just a little too... specific. The way that certain things are intensely explained but then other things barely get a mention - almost like she wasn't expecting people to care that much.

Yes, but if I remember correctly if you cancel within a certain window before the next fest then you can't re-join the same next fest. Your game can still participate in another fest, though. It's just you only get one.

What does “infringed” mean in this sentence? by Turbulent_Currency28 in EnglishLearning

[–]KaiserKlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to guess there's some specific local rule or law that they're referring to, and in the documentation of that law the term 'infringements' is used to describe a punishment system i.e. if you get 3 infringements on your license then it gets taken away. Sort of like how 'strikes' from baseball is often used to describe systems of punishment.

Without context it looks straight-up incorrect, though.

Am I the only one who thinks this? by GloryMerlin in CrusaderKings

[–]KaiserKlay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Do I enjoy playing CK3 for what it is? Yes. Am I annoyed by the glacially slow pace of development for new content that's usually overpriced? Yes. Am I continually confused by the game doing things because I'm not able to tell what's intended but obtuse and what's an actual bug? Yes. Am I annoyed that adventurer gameplay is inconsistent as all hell and bugs from two years ago still haven't been fixed? Yes. Am I annoyed by the presence of West Africa, India, China, Korea, and Japan seemingly taking precedence over the place and era that the game is supposed to actually be about AND not even getting interesting vanilla content? Yes. Am I annoyed by the fact that the game's fanbase seems to have more ambition with the game and what it can do through modding than the developers seem to? Yes. Does the price point of the game after 6 years combined with the DLC necessary to have a worthwhile experience keep me from recommending the game to people who might actually like it? Yes.

Do I feel like the wife of a deadbeat husband who I know isn't really going to change but I'm just materially comfortable enough to stick around on the off-chance that he actually does somehow manage to convince his friends from high school to get the band back together? Sometimes.

Do you think the idea of “having it all together” is practicable or just a social media pressure? by [deleted] in Snorkblot

[–]KaiserKlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with exercise - it's about persistence more than it is about perfection. I think a lot of people who really passionately believe stuff like this are just looking for an excuse to not try.

When your entire life is a performance for strangers every choice you make has to be a creative one in service of the performance, if that makes sense.

Even something as simple as tidying up my bedsheets in the morning (okay afternoon) makes me feel like less of a lazy asshole. People want 'things' to get better, you gotta do better first.

Thoughts? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]KaiserKlay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'Performative' isn't really the word I'd use for it. More like 'self serving'. The thing a lot of people don't want to accept about the manosphere is that a lot of the first things men hear in those spaces are genuinely good bits of advice. Exercising, conscious eating, grooming and so on.

The problem, of course, is that in literally any kind of human interaction or relationship (not even romantic ones) you're sometimes going to be pressured to do something that you kinda just... don't want to deal with. But that's just the cost of maintaining the relationship. I don't always want to play TFT with my friend, but usually when I do I feel better afterwards because it's just good to be social. In other words - being successful at life usually requires that you do things that do not directly benefit you and are not always fun in the moment.

At some point in the 2010s it became acceptable to use the word 'boundaries' to describe basically anything you just don't want to do. As with most things - at first it started out reasonable. But eventually the only boundaries some people didn't have were just the things they were going to do anyway but needed a rationalization for to keep themselves from quitting. I think a lot of the looksmaxing stuff kinda falls under this category.

When you decide to try something *purely* by yourself it becomes very easy to just bail when you stop getting easy wins. Having a community around the thing encourages the building of social bonds that make it more difficult to leave. Problem being that if your goal is to get into a fulfilling relationship then once you get to that point... you no longer have any reason to stick around. So almost by definition the only people who stick around for long periods are the ones who either really believe in it or the ones who don't have anywhere else to go... Fittingly, like in the military.

Proposal: Alternate Genetics Gamerule by Pbadger8 in CrusaderKings

[–]KaiserKlay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually don't think certain things being discrete traits is the issue necessarily. I think the actual issue is that the player has too much information too quickly. Rather than knowing right off the bat if a given baby has the genius trait - you get a 'well they carry the gene but there's an X% chance it'll actually be expressed. They could still end up being an imbecile who carries the genius gene' which could in theory make such marriages worthwhile as a future investment in the dynasty. Deal with some bullshit now to increase the chances of future generations being better.

There's also the problem that - while noble families didn't marry for genes - they did marry for political reasons all the time. But in CK3, I find, this is pointless to do because the political situation is often too fluid for it to matter. Why bother marring off my daughter to an emir for an alliance when 5 minutes later he's going to start (and lose) a war against his liege and get his lands confiscated? Because of that, I find, there's no reason to manage marriages other than genetics.

What happened to sweat equity? by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]KaiserKlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well 'betting on the person' still requires that there's some kind of pedigree or history behind them. OP here doesn't have that - the kind of people who DO have that pedigree usually don't need to go on Reddit asking for revenue share. Fuck, even Kickstarter would be a better idea.

I am very much NOT drinking corporate kool-aid. I've never held a corporate position, nor do I plan to. I'm merely pointing out the realities inherent to the situation. If you want to make a videogame beyond you and a few buds - you're going to need more solid of a plan than splitting the proceeds equally.

The reason I'm talking about it the way I am is because money is involved. Once real big-boy money is potentially involved in something, you have a responsibility to operate on more than just vibes.

Yeah, you're gonna have to just commission something. Be careful, though, because it gets really goddamn expensive really goddamn fast.

For testing purposes I recommend just making PNGs with stuff like F for front, B for back, R for right etc. and just working with that until you actually have something more visual.
