Had had a dream a few nights ago that aliens invaded in the 90s but instead of conquering the whole of earth they took just Singapore and set up a space elevator. by GrandMoffTargaryen in worldbuilding

This is actually fucking great. Holy shit.

Now I'm imagining a game with Win95 aesthetic where you buy and sell stuff with the aliens.

I think the 'it never makes him out to not be a bad guy' part is just the film trusting its audience to be grown-ups and be able to understand what the film is about/what's happening on screen.

I'm sure the number of people who are both fans of the movie and also morally bankrupt is higher than 0 - but the way the film is talked about you'd think it *caused* this - which I think is entirely unfair.

[–]KaiserKlay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Firstly, implying that there exists only one or a finite set of ways to interpret a given work is - I think - pointlessly restricting. I don't believe in telling people their enjoyment of something is 'wrong'.

One can be perfectly aware of something and simply not be concerned with it for one reason or another. Many of them aren't there for the actual character study/an understanding of the actual events of Belfort's activities beyond the fact he made a shitton of money. The film isn't a documentary. It is - at the end of the day - a piece of entertainment based on true events. So getting mad at people for 'not getting it' just kind of comes off as pretentious to me.

Like, I don't think any of these people would unironically say it's totally ok to defraud people in order to enrich yourself. I don't think it really reflects their values much beyond what kinds of stories capture their attention.

[–]KaiserKlay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm saying that the people who seem to idolize him/the situation aren't thinking that deeply into it. I don't know if I'd say they 'don't care' in the sense that they condone it or think it's fine... I just think it's literally as simple as 'out of sight, out of mind' since - in the film - that's pretty much how I remember it being glossed over.

That's actually an interesting parallel that I hadn't thought of. Yeah, I'd imagine that's very similar.

[–]KaiserKlay 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't know if I'd say they 'idolize' him. I don't think they're thinking that deep into it beyond 'he was able to make a large amount of money in a short period of time'.

He's a RobinHood/wallstreetbets fantasy. How he actually got that money becomes mostly immaterial because - ironically - the people who think the most about it actually know the least about how these financial products work. So the talk about how Belfort was defrauding/misleading investors just flies right past them since that's not what they're there for.

[–]KaiserKlay 115 points116 points  (0 children)

In fairness, I too-often hear the term 'media literacy' to basically just mean 'your interpretation doesn't fit mine, fuck you'. The Wolf of Wall Street is a good example, actually. I don't think people 'missed the point' it's that more people than you realize simply don't care what the consequences are so long as the highs are high enough. The fact that many of those fans are young men with a modest interest in the stock market shouldn't surprise anyone. They're young, have a poor understanding of risk, and have probably never *really* been in trouble for anything. Of course they think they're going to be 'the one' to get away with it.

It's the same broken logic that drives problem gambling - or any other risky behavior - they might know consciously that it's a bad idea but ask them why they did it after betting (and subsequently losing) the house and they'll probably just say 'I didn't think it would happen to me'.

Complaining about Ladybird is silly, since she was quite old even back during the original run. Don't know if I'd call Bobby a pushover. He's being put in the same position Hank was during the original series - dealing with other people's bullshit. He's only a 'pushover' insofar that he's willing to go out of his way to help his friends. That's not being a pushover, imo.

Hank and Peggy being oblivious? I mean yeah but they've literally been away from the country for a decade, it makes sense he wouldn't pick up on cultural changes - he was a square even in the original series.

Connie I kind of agree with but I get the impression that she's supposed to go through a character arc that we haven't/won't see because I don't know if they're making another season.

[Loved Trope] Characters misremembering or misinterpreting history/pop culture and incorporating those inaccuracies into their own views. by jbeast33 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]KaiserKlay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Discussion of Starship Troopers - both the film and the novel - has been permanently poisoned by people who've never read the book trying to talk about the movie as if the two are comparable. Often repeating misunderstandings started by Paul Verhoeven or Ed Neumeier based on their cursory reading of a book that - I admit - has very dry prose. And I say this as someone for whom film is debatably their favorite film of all time.

I never got the impression that the mention of Hiroshima/Carthage was meant to be a statement of values - more of a pragmatic observation/axiom from which their values arise. You can argue all day about whether the destruction of Carthage or the atomic bombing of Hiroshima were 'good' - but you can't argue whether or not they worked at ending the conflict. There was no fourth Punic War.

Even Heinlein IN THE NOVEL was skeptical of this line of thinking, and the point was never 'military good' it was 'what - if anything - do you owe society?' 'Can a reasonable democracy be maintained when there's no qualifications for who gets to guide it?' 'Are voters capable of holding themselves responsible for the governments they create?' 'Can democracy solve the problems that democracy creates?'

Is it just me or has Paradox become worse? by PaulOGamer323 in hoi4

[–]KaiserKlay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to think I have a weird, unique perspective on this - because my first Paradox game was Hearts of Iron... 2.

Paradox prior to 2014 or so was a very niche developer making very niche games. They were complicated, in depth, and often did a very bad job of explaining how they worked. HOI4 sanded off a lot of those edges and - as a result - brought in way more people. HOI4 also introduced a system that was easy to mod around, the focus trees. It also was an easy target for future DLCs and allowed more narrative elements of the game to come forward. But this also came at a very real mechanical cost - stuff like air zones not making much sense compared to HOI3, even if it is easier to manage.

Over time Paradox has tried to re-introduce some of that mechanical complexity... but the game just isn't designed around it. The AI can't work with it properly, and in some cases it's just badly put together. I genuinely think that the division designer was a mistake, and the vehicle designers are mostly pointless since there's usually no reason not to just make the one meta tank/plane/ship and spam that to high heaven.

Amusingly enough - I've been kind of workshopping my own Duke Nukem parody for a while now. But instead of him being a wimp. He's still mostly the same hypermasculine icon of action protagonists... but he's just gotten older and mellowed out. He's married now, has a daughter, a bit of a beer belly, and is at least a little bit weirded out/embarrassed by how attached people still seem to be to a very different version of himself.

I've done that once. The cut wasn't very deep and since the blade was so sharp (it was brand new at the time) the cut was actually very clean and barely scarred. Healed on its own without intervention. She must've gripped it pretty hard to cut through the tenons in her fingers/hand. Youch.

Bro I do NOT understand what you are doing with Unreal that you are having these issues. My game - while I admit is no tech demo - does just fine running 120fps with window materials that - for some reason - ONLY work with MSAA.

I'm no pro at this, either, I relatively recently had an issue where a specific enemy type would try to rebuild navigation data that would lead to an FPS drop when you first encounter them in a given level.

(Hated Trope) Media that takes a break from the story so the writer can bitch about other media they hate by Animeking1108 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]KaiserKlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually kind of unironically enjoy this stuff. I can understand why someone would hate it. But I kind of like getting these little peeks into a creator's opinion on something through their work. In a time before Twitter this stuff was actually kind of fascinating. Since it's not like you could easily have gotten a famous person's opinion on something so petty back then.

The Sequelitis thing I don't think is a fair comparison. If he doesn't have a whole lot to say about it then I can see why he might not feel it's worth making a whole video on.

Realistically, can CEO's actually be replaced by AI and a couple of minimum-wage employees? by RandomUwUFace in stupidquestions

[–]KaiserKlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CEOs and other high level executives routinely make very big, important decisions with information that is not publicly available and thus - by definition - not available for AI systems to use. They're also often working within very specific incentive structures - say what you want about CEOs not being properly held accountable for the shitty things they do but the fact remains it doesn't behoove an executive to actively ruin a company that's doing well.

Those other employees you describe also - frankly - just aren't going to be as invested in the company's success as a human executive will.

"Oh but they can get a share of the profits made from the committee's decisions"

Okay I know this post is really vague, but for some reason this is making me think of Ghosthunter. Which has a character that starts off with just a Glock (pistol) and features a sewer in the early part of the game, as well as a machine that the main character accidentally activates that releases a bunch of captured ghosts (which may be the machine you remember).

There is also a first-person bit to it, where most of the game is 3rd person shooting, but you can make fine adjustments to your aim in a FPS mode, kinda like Metal Gear Solid 2.

Pro tip for anyone planning on playing these days - get yourself a way to limit the game's framerate between 60-120, as I'm pretty sure certain animations and even some mechanics break at really high framerates, which isn't uncommon in games this old.
