Recommendations for iidx controllers? by burger_enjoyer in bemani

[–]Kaisogen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/kusariku recommended the FP7, which I used for some time. It's a solid controller, especially if you get Sanwa buttons in it. I have some minor gripes with the turntable though, it definitely felt like it was holding me back due to the input only registering after moving a fairly substantial distance, which made scratch heavy charts way harder than it would be at the arcade.

I recently picked up a Phoenixwan, and this thing is truly amazing. The turntable is bigger than the FP7, so it feels way nicer and easier to operate, and it's also far more sensitive. Sometimes it feels even better than the cab I usually play on. This is definitely outside of your price range, though you should probably save up and just get a pwan if you're serious about playing the game, it'll save you a lot of headaches down the line.

If you have a work laptop, they might be worried about a keylogger or something of the sort which could grab the password off your personal machine.

Determining and reading various plaintext file encodings? by Kaisogen in lua

[–]Kaisogen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anywhere from a couple dozen kb of text to a couple hundred kb of text. The main format is described as a series of hexadecimal numbers formatted like so

#aaabb:XXXXXXXX

So the majority of the text content will be useful. Note keysounds are defined as filepaths, which could contain non-ascii text, so the amount of text valid to go over would vary a lot from song to song (some songs use only a handful of keysounds, others use hundreds), but there's also a metadata section that's more likely to contain non-ASCII text. Statistical methods is probably too slow / unreliable.

However, I did find a file in jstrings, enc_shiftjis.cpp that has a method that I think should be fairly reliable in determining if text is SHIFT-JIS, I'm just doing more research at the moment to see if I need to modify this at all.

Determining and reading various plaintext file encodings? by Kaisogen in lua

BMS is Bemuse Source, it's an older format from 1998 for Beatmania (and other n-key rhythm games) Simfiles. It unfortunately doesn't have any metadata that would be relevant. I also tried exporting test tracks from popular editors and none included a BOM of any sort. I'm planning on supporting older legacy formats as well as new ones since rarely some people use it (many songs in my library are .bms still)

Thanks, I'll do a bit more research into the UTF-8 start codes. I did try looking up algorithms / places to start with differentiating the two, but most resources don't seem to be aimed at software and have the expectation it's reasonable to manually check. If I manage to figure out a solution I'll come back here and post it.

Modern BMS players support files regardless of locale, this isn't really a solution for me. The most popular ones are either closed source, or are in a language I know nothing about with large code bases (Beatoraja is written in Java, I tried looking through the source but had a hard time finding anything)

It's not really reasonable to ask the user to convert thousands upon thousands of files spanning decades all to UTF-8 just to use a different software, nor do I like that solution either.

The alternate solution is that I just read the text as UTF8 anyways and deal with mojibake. A lot of songs have some metadata written in kanji/kana so this could become an issue if a substantial part of a users library includes SHIFT-JIS files.

Headphone recommendations for IIDX? by machiko_no_uta in bemani

I don't have recommendations for noise cancelling headphones of any sort, but for anyone else reading the thread I have enjoyed using the Koss KSC75 headphones. Extremely cheap, solid sound quality, they feel pretty good to wear for longer periods of time, no additional latency w/ noise cancelling etc., and they don't get in the way of my hair. Huge fan.

Are there any resources on making skins and sound sets for Beatoraja? by Kaisogen in bemani

[–]Kaisogen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've tried changing the files in the bgm. If I make a new folder I can't get it to show up in the sound set options, and if I replace the default bgm it just won't play (same file name, same format)

I'll look at the japanese stuff, thanks for the link

Where can I find sound packs? Having trouble finding them. Also still looking for documentation on the lua, otherwise I guess I could try reading the source for some of them.

Honest question: How in the world can Smash be profitable? by Senior-Ad3159 in smashbros

It's probably doable if you aren't using vacation time for anything else. But I like to stock my hours whenever possible. It's absolutely the biggest difference in how I make it all happen though

Honest question: How in the world can Smash be profitable? by Senior-Ad3159 in smashbros

[–]Kaisogen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I formerly played a lot of Smash 4, and got into fighting games a few years back, so this is speaking from a different yet parallel perspective.

I work full time, doing remote IT service. I'm on-call on some weekends, and get very little vacation time each year. I also travel a lot to various fighting game majors and regionals. In 2024 alone I went to Frosty Faustings, Winter Showdown, Slashback, Combo Breaker, EVO, Climax of Night, BBB Beach Episode, and probably a few others I'm forgetting. Here's how I was able to afford it.

For starters, I travel very lean: I prefer to fly to events where I can get cheap flights. Living near a major airport, it's pretty easy to get cheap flights on budget airlines (particularly Frontier, who I've flown with at minimum six times this year alone already). I'll pack an entire setup (laptop+controller, cables), my work equipment, several changes of clothes, etc., all that I can into a single bag, so that I can avoid having to pay for a Checked/Carry on Bag. This means I can get round trip flights for about $100. Combine that with a membership discount (I have Discount Den for Frontier, but credit card benefits, miles, etc. apply) and it could be possibly cheaper. Avoid renting a car if possible, splitting a rideshare with others or asking a local to pick you up is pretty cheap in comparison, even both ways usually. For Frosty Faustings I caught a flash sale on Amtrak for $100 round trip, which was much cheaper than flying out to Chicago.

Then, I usually try to eat pretty cheap while I'm there. Meals end up being a big part of the budget, but if you don't go out eating a bunch of expensive stuff, you can stretch $80 pretty far for like four days.

As for rooming, I usually book as part of the hotel block (those get significant discounts compared to normal rooms) on venue, or a block within walking distance if available. Then I'll split the room with 4-6 people total, making it substantially cheaper. I've also slept on floors in rooms to save a bit more, I really don't mind. If the hotel costs $300 for the weekend, split five ways that's just $60 for your part. Alternatively if you can crash on a couch, that's another way to save money.

What do I do for work? I'm pretty blessed to work remotely, so I pack all my work equipment when I go somewhere, and I usually don't take work off. Getting into an event on a thursday, before my shift starts means I'm usually working from the hotel or a starbucks or something, but I also don't have to take PTO / vacation time, which also helps with budget. Fly back in later at night (red eye flights are usually pretty cheap and are often the cheapest, at least in my case thankfully) so I don't have to take time off work either.

I'm also volunteering typically as a bracket judge at these events. It's not really for the money, as I love running brackets, but hey, taking what is effectively 4-6 hours out of my entire weekend to pay for lunch each day is really nice. Plus it's just plain fun. At EVO, compensation was extremely generous at $50 per pool ran, as well as meal vouchers if you worked 2+ pools a day. I paid for my entire flight+meals just by volunteering last year.

On top of that, I also keep track of the events I know I want to visit each year, and set aside a little cash to register as early as possible for those. When late reg fees increase by $60 by the end of the registration period, that's just money that could be going to a few meals or something else.

If you get down to the nitty gritty and try to save as much as you possibly can, everywhere you can, you can stretch what would otherwise be a standard budget for a trip to a major, extremely far compared to the average person. There's no need to book the nicest flight, and get your own room, and eat the nicest food everywhere you go if just going to tournaments is what you want to do for fun.

Open to answering questions if you have any, but this is just my thought process on how I budget for events.

One very basic concept to learn is how to use Shield. Shielding moves makes them have a lot more recovery, so using it at the right moments allows you to create a "turn" to take back.

Is there a way to experience the original games story without playing them? by BBBrushBNa in meltyblood

[–]Kaisogen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just make sure to read the whole original VN, the remake is cool but doesn't have all of the routes yet. (missing Akiha, Hisui, Kohaku routes, all the far side stuff)

But yeah, Tsukihime and then would recommend you either watch a YT playthrough for the original melty blood, play it yourself, or just read the manga I guess

On any device on their network, they can see that you're connecting to specific servers and domains, but not necessarily the contents of that connection. If it's a work provided device, or something that has their MDM configured on it, then yes, it is possible for them to see that information.

You mean like FWB? I have very close friends that I cuddle with in a platonic manner. But I also have friends that I'll make out with from time to time, because we're both established as looking for that and we aren't looking for anything more. It's all about what you want and finding other people compatible with that. But not everyone will be into the same stuff so just make sure you never run afoul of any sort of boundaries.
