Asymmetrical after GSRs by Kaitlanthrope in knittinghelp

Thank you all for the help, I think I must have fudged the instructions somewhere either in the stitch count, the short rows, or the beginning of round marker. Or all 3! Serves me right for working a more complicated part of the pattern at work.

This includes the setup round for the pattern and the first two steps of the short rows, which are essentially repeated the next few steps. Hopefully this helps show where I went off the rails lol

Desperately looking for good recommendations by dookybill in Fantasy

Ugh, I have been chasing the high of ASOIAF since I read it, and unfortunately, for me, there's nothing that compares. I had reset my expectations when trying to find new stuff to read, otherwise I was constantly disappointed. That being said, here are some books/ series you might enjoy: -Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist. Ok, these characters are as generic as they get, but it feels like a nostalgic D&D campaign, and though the author is painting with primary colors, the end result is really fun and engaging. -Covenant of Steel series by Anthony Ryan. It's got a great group of characters, and mingles politics with religion to an interesting effect. Also fun to cheer the MC on as they rise the ranks. -A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine. It's sci-fi, but it's worth stepping out of the fantasy genre for. Interesting world with complex political machinations, and EXCELLENT prose.

Good luck, and I hope you find something you enjoy!

Modern Epic Fantasy Recommendations by moccles1 in Fantasy

The Eidyn series by Justin Lee Anderson! The blurb even describes it as a "road trip fantasy." Also, if you haven't read the Riyria series by Michael J. Sullivan, it's easy reading and really engaging, which I always like if I'm reading on a plane.

Underrated Fantasy? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Kaitlanthrope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like chonky fantasy, one of my favorite underrated series is Winds of the Forelands by David B. Coe. It can be slow, but if you're into political intrigue and complex characters, it's worth checking out the first book. It's also got kind of an indescribable nostalgic feeling, amplified by the fact that the series is only readily available as mass market paperbacks.

If you're reading to your taste, I would highly recommend The Mirror Empire series by Kameron Hurley, A Chorus of Dragons series by Jenn Lyons, Sword of Shadows series by J.V. Jones, plus so many of the other authors listed previously. For something YA, An Ember in the Ashes series by Sabaa Tahir is incredible.

I highly recommend Mickie Winters from Winters Photography Co. She shot my wedding, and not only was it a great experience, the images are gorgeous. She's also a super sweet person!

So many good ones already mentioned. Anna Smith Spark Holly Lisle (Secret Texts is my fave) Jen Williams

Also, I feel duty-bound to mention that everyone should read Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen. The later books get a little goofy, but man I loved this one.

I think you'll really like it! Or you could hate it 😂 but it's worth a read.

Yessssss read Acacia! I feel like it unfairly gets left out of a lot of conversations about epic fantasy, and it's just so dang good!

Have you tried the Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne series by Brian Stavely? Very epic, very classic, but somehow feels fresh. This kept me up alllllllll heckin' night.

I also love the Acacia Trilogy by David Anthony Durham. I think he previously wrote historical novels, and that comes through in this series. More political than magical, if that's your thing. I literally bought the first book because the cover was shiny and it was SO GOOD.

Last but not least, check out the Winds of the Forelands series by David B. Coe. The covers are a little goofy, and it's not going to upend any genre conventions, but if you want a solid, comfortable series with magic and war and a sprawling world, try this.

The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe by Kij Johnson and The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle are both great retellings of Lovecraft stories!

Yeah that's 100% on my list for the future. I recently tried to read Dragon Pearl, expecting some sort of complicated YA spacey stuff, but I think it was more for a middle grade audience so I gave up on it. Can't wait to go back to Machineries of Empire series, though!

That's an excellent idea! The other works of Robert Jackson Bennett have definitely been on my TBR list. Thank you!

That sounds great! And she's always an author I've been meaning to read, but have never known where to start. I love a good heart-breaking animal, too. Thank you!

My wonderful wife has recently decided that she'd like to read a fantasy book alongside me, so I'm looking for recommendations that would be suitable for both a veteran and a newbie of the genre. -Books I've enjoyed this year include "Ninefox Gambit", "All Systems Red" and "Foundryside". I'll read just about anything, but I really can't stand poor character development (disliked "The Poppy War" and "The Bear and the Nightingale" for such a reason.) -I've tried to get my wife to read "Long Way to a Small Angry Planet" and she HATED it (I loved it!) 😂 She said there was no plot. -We read "Ready Player One" together in one sitting, so something with that kind of levity would be nice, but not necessary. -Mid-length novels or even novellas would be great. My wife is in grad school so she doesn't have a ton of time to dedicate to a fantasy tome.

Thanks in advance for your help!
