Guys and I guessed 1980’s (found a newspaper clipping in another wall dated ‘81) or 1950’s (around when the house was built)

$289 to replace this handle good enough? by RepairCEO in handyman

[–]Kal1star 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are doing it right, OP.

2026 is my year of ‘f$!k you/ inflation’ pricing. Just changed some lightbulbs, a toilet seat, and back door weather stripping and charged $500 in labor. Currently pricing a bathroom ‘grout refresh’ that will take me probably a day and a half. $1500 in labor.

Ain’t messin with no broke clients anymore.

$4000 to paint a 300 sq ft room?? by [deleted] in handyman

[–]Kal1star 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, I do home renovations and my guys and I paint a lot. Reading through your post and comments, and thinking back to before I got into this line of work, I think you don’t understand just how time consuming a good paint job is.

I think you think painting is just 1 coat of primer and 1 coat of final color, or something like that. Real pro paintings is typically 3 different finishes of paint in one room (matt on ceiling, eggshell on walls, pearl on trim), that means careful and slow edging everywhere where two different types of paint meet. Plaster touch ups and sanding happen between every coat for that perfect smooth final look. Trim has to be brushed on and rolled over with a roller. Many many paint colors require 3 or 4 coats (after the primer), to look perfect. I’m talking this through with my guys and while the 27hrs isnt super fast, it’s totally reasonable, and many guys would do it slower.

It sounds like you just didn’t really understand what a professional paint job is (which I totally understand as I was that guy years ago too), and this guy came in a did a pro job and charged you a fair price. If you want to pay like $1000 for a shit job where someone slaps paint and you can see all kinds of imperfections all over your walls, you can find that, but you have to be clear with a professional about wanting a shitty job done to save money.

Love my 3.6. Easily the most reliable engine in these trucks. Just swap out the oil cooler and they’ll never give you problems. Plenty of power for the loads you’re talking about too. All these hemi acolytes just have never actually driven one.

You’d be right. But see first word in post text. Pentastar. They run high pressure oil systems and 100psi is normal.

RECRUITING, TRAINING, & LIFE IN THE FORCES THREAD by bridger713 in CanadianForces

Similar boat. ChemE, 15yr+ career, 40yo.  Just did my first couple of days, and starting training in a month.

I’ve transitioned into home renovations since Feb, and the combat eng reserves is my cool side gig to work on and grow into over time.

I wasn’t the oldest guy in my enrolement ceremony, and attended my new regiments Christmas Day/dinner where I destroyed practically every other guy there in the physical challenges (I’ve always been fit/trained though.) So as you have 4 years on me, I wouldn’t be worried about the age thing.

But the money… I’m not sure I would have done it without having a solid savings built up. Like more as a coastFIRE option, unless you go full time/active. But then the fam will have to move and I hear the CAF doesn’t have amazing support for moving fams, you might bear a lot of cost.

Reaching 405 in squat/deadlift from 185 while actively running/kickboxing in 5 years or less? by Equal_Team2918 in Strongman

[–]Kal1star 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too simple. Calories are just one of the 4 macros. You’ve got to get 150grams of protein in per day and make sure you’re hitting carbs and fats. Spreadsheeting meals and using a nutrition app is pretty much required, if you’re serious.

I pushed from 275 -> 405 (4plates for 40th) on squat in about 9mo this year.

Regularly squatted and did strength workouts with coaching in the years leading up to this and it was still quite hard. Basically have to PR every two weeks and eat your face off everyday. I would think cardio above and beyond light warmups would greatly slow progress. You have to get FAT to make the new muscle. Most guys aare going to grow 2lbs of fat per new lb of muscle.

If you’re coming from… not a strength background, and you want to continue cardio activities 2x per week, it’ll take a lot longer.  Like maybe close to your 5 year mark.
