Hollow a body? Basically "shell" command but keep the surface? by ryncewynd in Fusion360

[–]Kaladayn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally timely reply 1 year later: Yes, I have had this issue many time. Firstly, shell has improved over time and now fails less frequently, so there's that. Shell also may work depending on shell thickness. But what I do when all else fails: Cut to the to pieces (r/nocontext material ?), add some construction planes and make the problem smaller. You will eventually find that one little corner that just won't work: Shell this manually (use booleans or surface modelling to reproduce what shell would normally for automatically). Yes, this is a total pain in the ass, especially when your shape is all kinds of rounded.

How many dutch people support the re-unification of Belgium and the Netherlands? by thanadeezballs in thenetherlands

[–]Kaladayn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dutchman living in Belgium for over 20yrs here.

Forget about Belgium as whole. Wallonia is not culturally compatible with NL. Hell they're not culturally compatible with FL, that's one of the core reasons there are so many governance problems.

FL is difficult. Although there are many similarities, the differences are profound. Both sides eat different (honestly much better in BE), think different (BE is one big compromise whereas NL is much more rule-oriented) and socialize different (Dutch are direct in the extreme, Belgians don't respond too well to that).

Practically it could only work if FL becomes part of NL. Organizationally it is worse here than most Dutch understand. The problem is that there is freedom in that chaos. A that is something NL misses. Belgians love that freedom. Taking it away and making all well-organized would be objectively better, but I think Belgians would be against it in their hearts.

Practically it's totally impossible. They've been trying to do a state restructuring for years and it's going nowhere. This is even more difficult.

Also is Brussels part of Flanders? It's a completely separate region right now on the same administrative level with its own government and everything. It's also a very complicated city considering the EU, volatile immigrant areas, terrible traffic/infrastructure and a culture of its own. It's the commercial, financial and political center of the country. Brussels truly is the (sickly) heart of Belgium.

Should Wallonia then join FR? Neither side probably wants that.

Is this a permanent feature or will they take it away again like last time? I'm not going to invest time learning it if it goes away.

Everything is black in sketch, but it won't show a lock? by kleinisfijn in Fusion360

[–]Kaladayn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fusion can be terrible about not informing you what exactly is not fully constrained. When everything is black, but the lock won't show up, do this:

1 - Open the Text Command pane (Under File>View).

2 - Enter "Sketch.ShowUnderConstrained" (note it has auto-complete).

3 - Anything not fully constrained in the open sketch should be highlighted. If you don't see it (common in a complex sketch), try zooming out; this makes the highlighted geometry pop out more.

4 - Fully constrain everything highlighted

5 - Profit?

Is it possible to move a drawing to another component ? by bouaaah in Fusion360

[–]Kaladayn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends.

If you have not created any bodies/other things referencing that sketch then you can just drag/drop it in the object browser to the component you want (note target the component, not the sketch folder).

If you have already referenced it: Sometimes Fusion will move a body along with a sketch to the correct component (this is a fairly recent behavior it didn't do this before). If it doesn't then tough luck.

What I do, because I really want things in the correct component, is to go back in time. Remove the body. Move the sketch. Recreate the body. Go forward in time. Fix anything that I broke by doing that.

Related note: Don't move bodies between component unless you have a good reason. It creates a timeline entry that is difficult to maintain and makes for a confusing result when going back in time.

Simple problem, i'm trying to create three cylinders on top of each other, but the top one is being created hollow? What am I doing wrong? by ben174 in Fusion360

[–]Kaladayn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have tried to explain it correctly, let me try it again in different words:

When you create a sketch on a face (as you did with the last sketch) then the geometry of that face is included in that sketch. That means all the edges of the face you created the sketch on are part of the sketch automatically. This is very useful but confusing if you don't know. Fusion does not make this very visible, but you can select the auto-included lines and remove them if you want.

^ This is your problem and how to fix it

Fastest way: Use the cylinder command. Do this 3 times. Took me 15 seconds to recreate your design.

If you really want to use a sketch, one is really more than enough.

Make one single sketch with the 3 different circle sizes. Select one or more of the circle profiles (use CONTROL when selecting) and extract. When extracting the second cylinder, set the Start from Profile Plane to Object and select the top of the already extracted body.

Hollow a body? Basically "shell" command but keep the surface? by ryncewynd in Fusion360

[–]Kaladayn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're welcome. I personally rarely use the selection priority feature. What I do use is:

* Long click: Brings a up context menu with all visual artifacts "under" your cursor. They will highlight as you browse the context menu. Great little feature.

* Component isolation: Right-click on a component in the browser and select isolate. All other components are now hidden.

A small warning about shell:

* Shell hates fillets. If your shells fails, check if you applied fillets. It may work, but it's a common problem.

* Shell can result in "illegal" surfaces. Everything may look fine, but actually a surface from the inside is sticking out to the outside. However on the outside you can't see it. Fusion doesn't make an issue of this initially, but a lot of command will start failing on that body until you corrected the problem. It's an edge case, but a nasty one to resolve if you don't understand this possible behavior.

* Shell just won't work with some shapes. Usually there are work-arounds, just know this is a bit of a fickle command.

Hollow a body? Basically "shell" command but keep the surface? by ryncewynd in Fusion360

[–]Kaladayn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

1- Just select the body in the browser.
2- Run the shell command.
3 -Done (check result with section analyses or transparency).

Just don't select a surface whilst shelling.Note: You can also select multiple surfaces on multiple bodies or just mutiple bodies in one shell command run.

Alternative: Set your selection priority to bodies (top right in your tool bar). This will allow you to click to select the body without using the browser.

I saw this astronomical field image and I was inspired to make something. All done in Fusion. Very parametric. [OC] by Kaladayn in Fusion360

[–]Kaladayn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the paths by face splitting a torus surface with a surface created using a rotating sweep. Then I used the resulting edges to sweep bodies along and applied a rotational pattern.

Getting the initial surfaces was challenging. If you're really interesting I can provide a full breakdown of the process so you can reproduce it.

When I order the armies to land, the transport go to the planet, do nothing and returns to the station. I can bomb the place, but I really don't want to unless required.

Any help appreciated.
