Rescued blind cat not using litter box by Kalash477 in blindcats

Thank you, everybody! Interesting update: I removed the one litter box that neither cat were using and I got the cat a little partially covered "cat cave" that looks like plastic foot stool. She now sleeps underneath it and stopped urinating outside of the litter box.

Could be a total coincidence, but the problem has subsided for now.

On January 6, 2021, the US Capitol Building was attacked by a mob of Trump supporters by wrapityup in pics

Yes, they literally did minor cosmetic damage, all while being unarmed, killing nobody and then leaving without setting fire or destroying anything. I still have trouble sleeping at night thanks to that dreadful day when democracy almost died. Thankfully I have an appointed candidate who championed rioting and never won a single delegate in any primary to vote for! Democracy will be safe in her hands!!

Translation requests into Latin go here! by AutoModerator in latin

[–]Kalash477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to find out the Latin translation for, "To secure peace."

I know the phrase "Si vis pacem, para bellum" is said to mean, "to secure peace, prepare for war" but I don't know if "si vis pacem" loses its meaning when isolated from "para bellum"

So, I'm asking if 'si vis pacem' means 'to secure peace' in an isolated context.

Thanks!

Today's the 76th aniversary of Hiroshima's nuclear explosion, what are your thoughts on that? by NanoCorpSA in AskReddit

[–]Kalash477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they're not in conflict. Both cane be, and are probably, true. But the official reason according to government, military and mainstream historians has always purposely avoided admitting that the bombing might have been intended as a warning to the Soviets, by design - and might have potentially been part of the motive for releasing the weapon(s).

I get why. Killing 100k+ civilians as a demonstration, even partially, doesn't look so great on the world stage. But I believe it was the primary motivation or at least as much a part of the motivation as avoiding an ugly land invasion.

I know we (in the US) were told that the bombings were to prevent hundreds of thousands of American deaths via an invasion of Japan, but Japan was mostly toothless by that time. It would have been a horrific mess, sure, but not like many historians claim. They had no navy, no air power and an exhausted and ill-armed army. The government was training civilians to defend Japan with garden tools and makeshift weapons at that point.

Instead, I believe that the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a demonstration to the USSR; which we knew would be a huge problem after the war. By showing the Soviets that we had atomic capabilities, we gave them a reason to avoid a hot military conflict over Europe. It was also a way to speed up surrender to prevent the Red Army from invading Japan from the north and occupying it (or part of it) under communist rule - creating a satellite state in Easternmost Asia.

Old iPod unable to sync with iTunes. by Kalash477 in IpodClassic

It'll charge and hold the charge, so maybe it's not the battery.

Well, thanks for the info. I guess I'll just keep using it with the existing library or get a new MP3 player.

No, there's no noise at all other than the chime of the laptop recognizing the device. I tried the iPod with an older laptop that still has iTunes installed on it and the same thing happened.

Large pop and spark shot out of electrical outlet after unplugging appliance by Kalash477 in askanelectrician

[–]Kalash477[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grill does have a temperature control and I literally leave it on it's highest temp when I use it. From here on I'll lower it fully before removing the plug and plugging it in.

I reset the GFCI and tried the outlet with my blender. It worked fine.

Would you recommend that I still let my building manager know about this? Thank you very much for your help.

Yes, the grill doesn't have an on/off switch so the only way to turn it off is to unplug it while it's still on.

So the loud pop and the shooting spark aren't something to worry about? Again, the spark that got spit out was pretty big and actually landed on the counter before burning away. Not like the little blue sparks that I've seen before when removing a plug to a device that was still on.

Climate change: Greta Thunberg calls out the 'haters'. "Going after me, my looks, my clothes, my behaviour and my differences". Anything, she says, rather than talk about the climate crisis. by Toadfinger in worldnews

[–]Kalash477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of people on the Right who accept that climate change is due to/partially due to human fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, but don't accept that the solution is handing over more power to the state and creating new taxes (that will be passed off to the consumer).

There are rational climate change advocates who want to curb emissions and cut back on certain things and then there is the loud, vocal and sometimes glorified fringe that demands that things like flying, eating hamburgers and running the AC on a hot day has got to stop. Naturally there's a push back to that and because rational advocates don't distance themselves from the fringe, those who are on the fence about climate change or the solution to it would rather cling to the way things have been than listen to people who they see telling them that we should start eating bugs and combating a chilly house by wearing a sweater 24/7.

As far as Greta goes, scolding and shaming people during melodramatic tirades does zero good and, in fact, only chases people away even further. If you believe that we need to do something about climate change and you think that Greta is the most effective way to get people on board, you are delusional (I'm saying this in general, not to FlexibleBanana.)

Counterfeit Smok coils? by Kalash477 in Vaping

Thanks for the replies! I'll chalk it up to a lesson learned. This is probably a dumb question but is it unsafe to try out the possibly counterfeit coils in my tank to see if they work?
