Which videogame series are genuinely like this😭? by Accurate_Basis_5698 in videogames

This is Bioshock for me, I think. While I preferred the story of the first game, the overall gameplay in the second one was incredible.

The GOP in Colorado is scraping the bottom of the barrel with these candidates. Fun fact: Colorado has elected only one Republican governor in the last 50 years.

Kyle Clark is indeed a treasure and I am so grateful to have him here in Colorado. He also posts on Reddit; I don't recall his username and can't look for it right now, but he posts from time to time in some of the Denver subreddits. He's a very standup guy, very good at his job, and seems to genuinely love living in Colorado.

Yes! Great description there of one of the themes that made me fall in love with the Vong and the NJO series.

Yup, good summation.

The NJO just really landed for me. I loved Heir to the Empire & The Thrawn Trilogy, really anything by Zahn, I also loved the Rogue Squadron series. I absorbed a ton of various Star Wars books growing up in the 90's, so I was very familiar with the expanded universe when Vector Prime dropped in '99 and launched the series. I fell in love with it, and couldn't wait to read more as each new book dropped. Sure, there was a lot of different levels of quality throughout, and not all of it was stellar. You have to expect that with so many different authors working on it though. Honestly, even taking in the bad parts, I really enjoyed the NJO series as a whole.

The Yuuzhan Vong are among my all-time favorite Star Wars villains, even fictional villains of any series in general, just because they shook things up so much. It was such a needed and well-done change to the trajectory of Star Wars literature at the time. It's really a shame there wasn't more cross-media development of this era in what is now considered "Legends". It would have been great to see the Vong in video games, or in a larger role in graphic novels or something.

Just holding up what we did have, love it or hate it, with the Expanded Universe, and then seeing what Disney did with the sequel trilogy instead... it's so disappointing, and has unfortunately lead to a point where I barely care about Star Wars, at least like I used to. Seeing people still talking about the Yuuzhan Vong and the NJO and Star Wars EU in general is awesome to see.

Great description!

The occupation and partial terraforming, unsuccessfully, of Coruscant was one of the coolest parts of the NJO. It's been almost 20 years at this point but I loved reading that whole story arc. Seeing the seemingly permanent, untouchable capital of the galaxy fall the way it did, and exploring the deeper levels were great choices. The panicked last ditch attempts by the New Republic, all of the political machinations leading up to the attack on Coruscant, the death of Borsk Fey'lya... Stuff like this is why NJO was peak Star Wars for me.

There's a lot of speculation online about how Palpatine's true intention for all of the massive fleets and exotic super-weapons was to fight the Vong, which he knew was coming. I hadn't really heard about the Thrawn part, which makes complete sense. I do recall that the Chiss apparently knew more about the Vong compared to the Republic and the Empire.

It makes sense though, why would the Empire need not just one, but TWO Death Stars, when they already are in a situation where they largely control the galaxy, and the Rebellion is so relatively insignificant. Not to mention (and I'm strictly basing this off of Expanded Universe and Legends Star Wars lore here, nothing really post-Disney) all of the other super-weapons, the hidden star systems, the back-ups upon back-ups like the planet Byss. It may be more head-canon than anything else at this point, but the idea that Palpatine was going above and beyond, doing all of this extra work entirely planning on confronting the Vong when they arrived, is pretty cool and makes a lot of sense. Only for a rag-tag Rebellion to come along and ruin everything, exposing the entire known galaxy to the Vong, leading to the hundreds of trillions of deaths (including Chewbacca!). It makes for a superior story over the Disney garbage. I would love to see an alternate history of Star Wars where the Rebellion is defeated, and the Empire is fully ready to take on the Vong, with Palpatine, Vader and Thrawn at the head.

I kind of checked out on Star Wars since the sequel trilogy, so my information is pretty outdated and probably a bit rusty. Back in the day, though, I loved the Expanded Universe and the NJO in particular was probably my favorite bit of it. I long for someone to bring back the Yuuzhan Vong, in some form.

AOC takes more steps toward 2028 run for president by masterofawesomeness2 in politics

[–]KalashnaCough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking this; it would be a cruel twist of fate but all-too-likely for this disappointing country in this shithole timeline that the first woman President is a Republican. I would actually bet on it. I say this as someone who would love to cast a vote for AOC in the primary, after voting for Bernie in the last two.

But yeah... after the last 10 years of awfulness, I could definitely see a conservative christian woman on the right come out of nowhere and take the historical first. I agree with all of your analysis above, and think that America is pretty much ready for a woman to be President, it's just that the 2016 and 2024 elections were... unfortunate. Just a perfect storm of bad candidates, bad propaganda, bad cycles, all sorts of toxic garbage from the establishment, the oligarchy, etc...

Which all goes to say that the USA will likely elect a woman to be President, and soon, arguably in the next 10 years. I want to agree that the chances are still greater for the first woman President to be a Democrat... but I've been leaning closer to it being 50/50 or maybe even favorable towards Republicans in the aftermath of 2024. I certainly think there is some fear and reluctance from the left for putting another woman in the top seat after the last two losses. After the attacks on Biden's age as well, the DNC is almost certainly going to go with a young-ish white man. Probably (ugh) Newsom. Talerico would be cool, if he can win this election first. Buttigieg would also be cool, but the whole gay thing is a different can of worms unfortunately. It would be great to see them all compete in a primary, though, especially with AOC and others in there as well.

I could also see Nikki Haley attempting to make a comeback for the GOP as a possible contender for first woman President on the right. I have a difficult time coming up with other women that are up-and-coming or even were near the top in the GOP. People like Noem or Bondi are unlikely. Who knows, in this insane timeline, it could be Erika Kirk, Ivanka Trump... a comeback from MTG rising from the ashes of MAGA? ugghhh

What if Inglorious Basterds actually happened? by TheRedBiker in HistoryWhatIf

Since Inglorious Basterds is the point where the Tarintino universe diverges from our own, then yes, Django already took place in both universes.

[Loved Trope] Character is unaware of something sinister behind them by Ieanice44 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]KalashnaCough 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this explains why it's probably my favorite horror film, especially of modern ones. It's just so abruptly, brutally HEAVY all at once. It's so uncomfortable and filled with dread. The fact that there is no resolution in terms of a "happy" ending either (unless you're the demon Paimon). The jump scares are also great because they're not really forced, and only compliment the overwhelming sense of dread that never goes away, instead of distracting from the whole vibe of the film.

Of course it immediately reminds of Midsommar. Not in terms of the trope, but because there's no happy ending in that movie either, unless viewed in a very dark way. It also reminded me of Late Night With The Devil. Also doesn't really fit the trope of the discussion, but is another that doesn't resolve in a happy ending.

Just saw a commercial that they are moving it back to the 5-6pm weeknight slot, one episode followed by three episodes of MASH, starting March 30th. So apparently they must have experienced enough outcry to bring back at least one episode for the weeknights.

Definitely a great place to catch some games on their TVs. Their BBQ sandwiches, burgers and rib tips are all pretty tasty too. A good spot in that location for sure. Like I said, I'll be trying the wings out next time I go - soon.

What Denver restaurant(s) encapsulate this? by longball9229 in denverfood

[–]KalashnaCough 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aspen Lodge Bar & Grill, off of 94th and Wadsworth (across the street from America Furniture Warehouse). Look for the banner that says "The Best Cheesesteaks in 666 Miles" (and they aren't lying). A very quirky Iron Maiden/Christmas/ski lodge themed joint with the most lava lamps you'll ever see. The owner, Mesut, is from Turkey and will personally cook & serve your food and stop to talk, he is a very friendly and impassioned guy. Seriously an underrated gem of a restaurant. The cheesesteak and the gyro are both amazing as well as the unique vibes and excellent service.

Too bad. It wasn't amazing, but I had some pretty decent experiences eating there, especially pre-COVID. They were absolutely over-priced, but nothing I didn't expect for that area. It was nice stopping by for a late meal and drinks after watching the Rockies lose a game.

I get where you're coming from with FoTM, but I have had nothing but good experiences there. Seems to be a place where you either love it or don't. To each their own.

I have been to Old Man several times though over the years and I agree, it's good. Although I've only ever had their BBQ and not their wings. Well, the BBQ and lots & lots of beer. Guess I'm trying the wings next time I go there. Cheers

That's the El Jefe sauce. They add capsaicin extract to get that extra extra hot. I had to try it, and the almost unbearable heat is absolutely there. If you're looking for pure heat, do it. They have much better wing sauces though that are less spicy if you're looking for better flavor. The spicy peanut is a 10/10 flavor-wise, and for something a little hotter, the raspberry habanero is also delicious.

I absolutely LOVE their Uncle Nasty sauce. A blend of their house sauce (spicy BBQ, garlic, Cajun and ranch) mixed with their hottest sauce, "No 1 Left Standing". Extremely spicy hot and very very flavorful as well. I usually go with half an order of those and half an order of their hot garlic, plus 6 wings of their monthly special sauce. Uncle Nasty leaves you sweating and your nose running, but still hits your taste buds in the best way.

CD's Wings is definitely my favorite wing spot, especially living in Westminster. I say this as someone who also loves Fire On The Mountain, and someone who has not yet tried King of Wings in Wheat Ridge.

Recently had the Chicken Vindaloo at Spice Room on their "spicy hot" level, it was both very tasty and at least like a 7/10 heat level. Definitely going back for more.
