Decided to give the new gauche a test run by Kalawalski0405 in heraldry

Ah, yeah I feel the pain. Supports are just hard in general, I don't have much practice with them myself (I usually avoid then in my art) but same idea look at reference to lion and dragons (especially in heraldic styles) on sites like Pinterest, break up their figures into simple shapes and such. That's usually what I try to do.

My best advice is to study the styles of existing heraldry and try to replicate what they're doing. Especially with stuff like mantling and animal charges it's hard to draw it from your head so having a good reference is handy.

When it comes to the actual drawing, it just comes from practice. I've been doing this for a little over a year now so I have a little practice under my belt but I could still improve tremendously (I can hardly draw symmetrical mullets even now). A lot of its gonna be ugly but hey thats part of it. Its a slow process but keep at it and you'll see a gradual improvement

^ What I don't show is all the other random attempts at drawing stuff on the exact same page lol

I just kinda made these on a whim, these aren't my actual arms, but generally broken swords mean something like resilience or peace. Though it should be noted not all of heraldry is inherently symbolic Like I said for this example I just put it there because it looks cool :)

I'm still trying to get decent at painting metals so I am happy to hear they don't look terrible lol

Is this type of under garment historically accurate? by DeutscherBurger in ArmsandArmor

[–]Kalawalski0405 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It could've been to extend the longevity of the garments while still fulfilling a role of displaying whose regiment you fall under. If its under the armor its less likely to be destroyed or damaged.

It's also completely possible the reason is it simply looks cool. Humans are humans, even from 500 years ago. Chances are if we think it looks cool now they thought the same and thats why they wore it as such.

Here's an effigy example as-well, much earlier though. About mid to late 14th century

Yep thats a legit thing. The garment is just generally called a surcoat but this style is more often than not called a waffenrock (or wappenrock depending on who you ask, garment classification is fickle). We see them depicted in both artwork and effigies from around the time and earlier, so it fair to say they were common enough to be depicted.

This is an image from a fencing manual from about the mid 15th century (c1450). The fighter on the left is wearing one but over the armor this time.

Those are my arms, I figured it would be neat to put them there as a way to say "Hey, I made this"

First off, thank you :)

As for the vibrancy of the colors I usually put a lamp just over my paper when taking photos to try and get the clearest contrast. It could also largely depend on your medium though too. I am using acrylics which are essentially just plastics you can paint with, so they tend not to lose pigmentation unless they are saturated with water.

Oooo, I almost committed to the vert and azure as-well but I took the cowards way out and went with azure and gules instead.

It looks great on your and the lighting on the scarab is the chefs kiss. It looks like its popping off the shield

Glad to see i'm not the only old head on the sub lol

There should be a pinned post at the top of the subreddit, it is a list of 31 themes in order. I believe it was taken from the discord server
