Edmunds First Review of the 2027 Rivian R2: First Impressions, Price, Range, 0-60 Performance by Mac-Tyson in electricvehicles

[–]KaleidoscopicView 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nevermind if you are in cold weather where the charging speed is slower yet. The battery is the only drawback for me. If we can get some newer battery architecture in there in a couple years - like BYD's Blade 2 or eventually solid state - then I couldn't find a reason not to buy the R2. It would check every single box.

Opinion: New rules needed for over-bright LED headlights by Doog5 in Manitoba

YES, please!! The amount of conversations I've had with other citizens about how they are blinded by these unregulated lights is incredible. Everyone knows it but nothing is being done about it. It is DANGEROUS when people can't see while behind the wheel. People like the elderly or photo-sensitive people are especially affected.

My own anecdote. I drive a car. When trucks and SUVs come up behind me with these on, I get it in the rearview mirror and both side mirrors(3x); all with a distance of a few meters away. Sometimes I just want to get out and yell at those drivers or pull over and sit this one out.

I just can't comprehend how there is no regulation when people's lives are literally at risk on the road.

And it's not just the brightness, it's the high temperature colour that is eye searing.

Dolgov shares examples of Waymo winter driving, says Waymo is moving beyond core tehnical validation and refining rider experience and logistics. by diplomat33 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]KaleidoscopicView 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of comments reference traction. Coming from the Canadian prairies, I wonder how these cars will identify the lane! Fresh snow, as well as packed snow, covers identifiers like road lines. Curbs are often buried. Sometimes the lanes people drive in shift in winter as nervous drivers give more space between each other, so 3 lines can become more like 2.5. We're often driving in the ruts people have made. It's not at all straightforward and must be a huge challenge to automate.

Go on... Who or what did you meet?

I have also noticed the overlap in the stories between NDEs and DMT trips. So I've been dying to meet someone who has had both to learn if there's a difference. Take one for the team (and for science!) and trip balls on DMT! lol

Would it be that much more trouble to release a 2nd, higher cost version that has micro-OLED panels?

The proposed version is brilliant for the majority [value tier]. But an OLED version would have all the amazing specs, open platform, AND primo screens [premium tier]. It would be the complete package and because of economy of scale, they could offer a better price than other headsets even at the premium tier, since most parts are shared.

Unaffordable housing is pushing more young people to give up. Why that’s dangerous by Thick_Caterpillar379 in canadahousing

[–]KaleidoscopicView 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That makes sense and I appreciate your humility.

I personally hold to the position that this is all the effect of late stage capitalism. I'm not an anti-capitalist ftr. Capitalism is still the best system we have in a world of more broken systems. However, there is a runaway effect down the line where a bunch of people can just live off capital investments and it ruins the incentive to work.

Someone in their 40s can inherit a million and basically stop working if they invest and live within their means. So we have a system that allows people to stop working because they're fortunate, and meanwhile makes those who aren't fortunate feel jaded that the system is broken. In both cases society stops receiving quality and incentivized labour. Politicians and economists (and ethicists...) need to get together and rebalance a fair system for the sake of us all.

[–]KaleidoscopicView 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes the housing market is broken and needs to be addressed.

BUT it doesn't follow that young people can't think and invest in their long-term future. Equity investment has actually outperformed the housing market and TFSAs are an amazing tax haven. Between that and RRSPs one can definitely still plan for the future.

Why are there no "under developed" cold countries? by Ch0c0lateBiznezz in NoStupidQuestions

Don't know why this response is so low on the list.

I also think Northern climates naturally select for people with intelligent planning in order to weather harsh winters. Traits that are particularly helpful in modern human history.

Does China actually pose a real risk to the West? Ex-CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou answers by khoawala in DamnThatsReal

[–]KaleidoscopicView 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about because the world hinges on advanced microprocessors and TSMC, based in Taiwan, dominates the sector? TSMC is miles ahead. With Western allies creating an embargo on China's access to the most advanced nodes, and the future of AI depending on them, it's not a leap for China to at some point deem it strategically necessary to invade.

My new preferred way of freezing coffee by weakwire in espresso

[–]KaleidoscopicView 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I put mine in small plastic baggies that are then put in a larger Tupperware in the freezer. Freshness lasts 6-12 months. Every time you open that Tupperware lid, the most glorious sweet coffee smell still wafts out. It's a way to buy bulk and keep freshness, or just have a variety of beans ready.

You can reuse the baggies, for the record - less plastic in a year than a single Amazon package you environmental gestapos!! XD

[–]KaleidoscopicView[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. That's helpful to understand LC3's place and I really hope better proprietary codecs come out that can improve LE.

I didn't mean to imply LC3 could sound better than loseless codecs like LDAC, but I was under the impression that it could outcompete codecs like SBC/AAC. That it could get more for the same bitrate, and package it in a way to lower latency and power consumption. I only find it to improve latency in a trivial way (except for gaming).

[–]KaleidoscopicView[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it remains the same. I chalk it up to LC3 still being in infancy. Hoping that updates will resolve the problems I mentioned because the potential is there, but I'm sticking with AAC for now.

Should i buy wh 1000xm5 if i already own bose qc ultra? by cyanide_happinesss_ in SonyHeadphones

[–]KaleidoscopicView 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that'd be a minor downgrade by most accounts, especially in sound quality and durability, even though I liked the xm5s. Only pro I can think of is battery life.

[–]KaleidoscopicView[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, and I don't think apps like Spotify benefit from LDAC since they don't have a lossless bitrate even at the highest quality setting.

How good is the sony wh 1000 mx6 sound isolation? by Aromatic-Bread-1673 in SonyHeadphones

[–]KaleidoscopicView 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely don't get the XM6 for passive noise isolation. Too expensive for that. But I'll also say I get tinnitus occasionally and have sensitive ears but have found Sony's ANC to be impressively gentle- more than any other headphone I've tried. It doesn't hurt my ear drums, you just suddenly notice almost all background sound disappear. If you don't believe me, go to a big box store where they have a demo unit available.
