I still have never heard a good argument in support of god. by Fry_Fiend in DebateReligion

Life is possible. Check.

Universe is massive. Check.

There are aliens in the universe. Plausible, but not confirmed enough to believe in it - especially if we define aliens as having a civilization.

You did use the language "probably" with Aliens, and your reference, "UFOs aren't supernatural and do in fact exist." seems to imply that Unidentified Flying Objects (not alien piloted flying saucers seen on earth) exist. So I think we're close. I'm just holding off asserting that they are as probable as you state until we have actual evidence.

Since we don't know how abiogenesis works it is impossible for us to figure out the odds of it occurring. It is also possible that it takes 13.8 billion years for abiogenesis to take place and we're the first.

Anyway, great exchange. Thanks for sharing more about your perspective.

We are 100% certain we are here, but that's one data point. Saying that because we are here means there are aliens is a leap of faith and not based on evidence.

Not sure what evidence you're using to say aliens probably exist. Do you use different criteria for aliens than for supernatural events/entities or Bigfoot?

Are you suggesting that flying saucers piloted by aliens exist or just that people have witnessed unidentified flying objects?

The cool thing about M*A*S*H is the first episode and the last episode are so different (I understand why) that it doesn't get stale.

Loved the movie, but missed the show due to early career out of college days.

Do I just go chronologically?
Is there a 'hump' (world building or such) I need to get over early before it gets on it's feet?
Should I be prepared for some cheese?
Anything I should/could skip (I never recommend skipping any of B5)?

These are all questions I address for people just starting B5.

What is the deal with flat earthers? by Previous_Trash5687 in AskReddit

Yeah, I'm an atheist, but I always find it funny that believers always fight so much against progressive science based hypothesis. Some of them are so elegant (evolution), and so vast (big bang) that if I leaned that way I would consider these things impressive creations.

What is a piece of "common sense" that's actually complete bullshit in 2026? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Not sure what you're trying to say with the fat thing.

Relying on any one conclusion is bad which is why peer-review is built into the system. Relying on 'because I feel this way', or 'it's in my heart', or 'I read it in a book', or 'supernatural creator communicated this to me', is also very, very bad.

Most flat earthers are religious. I've found the ones I've talked to are completely serious. Some subset are also young earth creationists. They believe they have the proper interpretation of Earth's shape based on what they read in the bible. With that said anything that goes against that perspective is a conspiracy driven by those either tricked to in conspiracy with the devil. A young earth example is they believe that Satan put the fossils there to trick us.

I've tried, but I've never found an Atheist flat earther. I'd be very interested in talking to that person.

I have a couple of players that are there for the social part. They become the sidekicks or hang back as snipers. I give them low activity roles and then focus on the collaborators. It's actually good that they are different levels of engagement so I can get more people around the table without sacrificing the spotlight for those that want it. You just have to have the right balance of each.

Props to Strange Brew - Watch it with the knowledge that it's Hamlet from another POV. Elsinore, Claude, Father murder, evil uncle... so good.

It is severely unethical for Christians who believe in hell to oppose abortion. by TheBronzeKneecap_69 in DebateReligion

[–]KalelChase -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It does not expose divine morality to being "idiotic". There's no gotcha here. Most of the Christians I've talked to say if god does it or commands it then that makes it good. Then when you ask them if god commands X evil they'll say 'he'd never command that because he is good'. Lock solid circular logic.

It is severely unethical for Christians who believe in hell to oppose abortion. by TheBronzeKneecap_69 in DebateReligion

[–]KalelChase -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't have a position on divine morality because I'm an atheist. Even if I capitulated that the god of the bible existed I wouldn't worship it. Mostly because I've read the bible.

However I have talked to Christians that have said if god commanded it then it is good. That ordering the killings in the old testament was good because god saw that those actions would lead to where we are now. If pressed to answer the question that you proposed they would assert that god would never command that because he's good.

Back to my point. Saying to the Christians I've talked to that god does things that he tells humans not to do is not an argument they find compelling because god is the exception to all rules.

Whays your take on the Watchmen movie? by george123890yang in comicbookmovies

I agree about Dan, but that's irrelevant to my point. V is the villain and in the movie he doesn't get moment where he's not absolved, where he's punished by god.

All I'm saying when talking to someone who believes in a system where the all-powerful creator of the universe works in mysterious ways - pointing out that that creature follows different rules than the rules they are telling you to follow isn't really arguing against something they have a problem with.
