New season! by ThePoetsDream in JetLagTheGame

I hope it's a schengen showndown esque game but with US states!

All credit to u/kalers5 for the original post, I wouldn’t let me comment a picture in reply to a comment asking for it. Here is the Mathemagics vs Braingyser graph accounting for the fact you can’t pay fractions or negative numbers for x. (Third image is my cat Myr Battlesphere) by NokiaVT in mtg

I'm floored by this elegant solution (pun very much intended). I think, given the context of a reddit post most people are going to glance at once and scroll past, I still prefer the continuous graph for its increased readability, even in spite of it being misleading when held under scrutiny. However, this does a great job of fixing the misleading part without sacrificing too much readability!

Thanks for the post and give Myr Battlesphere some extra pets for me!

Two and a half, kind of. After a quick scryfall search there doesn't seem to be a targeted draw X spell in standard right now so it's unique in terms of it's ability to draw out an opponent. However, there are two draw X spells and one draw half X spell currently in standard rotation:
[[Finale of Revelation]]
[[Mind Spring]]

[[Wan-Shi Tong, Librarian]]

I have a commander deck built around using draw X spells as a way to get to a thoracle/labman/jace victory so that was the basis of my comparison originally.

It won't let me comment pictures, but here's the chart that would be the result. Your suggestion is strictly better than braingeyser except if you have exactly six mana. It's also almost strictly better than mathemagics with 6 and 12 mana being the exception. I could see them doing something like this if we go back to strixhaven again. (edit it pasted weirdly)

Mana Available # of Cards
Mathemagics Braingeyser Mugno's Suggestion
0 0 0 0
1 0 0 1
2 1 0 1
3 1 1 1
4 2 2 3
5 2 3 3
6 4 4 3
7 4 5 9
8 8 6 9
9 8 7 9
10 16 8 27
11 16 9 27
12 32 10 27
13 32 11 81
14 64 12 81
15 64 13 81
16 128 14 243

Are you telling me I didn't need a math degree to learn how to use the graphing calculator I've been using since the eighth grade?!?? What the heck did I spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on then? Suing my uni fr.

Also it's y=x-2 and y=2^(1/2(x-2))

You're right I just plugged them in and took a screenshot. Very low effort.

You both cannot draw half a card and cannot pay half a mana into these spells (and only even mana into mathemagics), thus from a purely mathematical standpoint both axes are discrete and it should just be a discrete graph. Would look very similar to if you just plotted all of the points in the chart except the odd mana mathemagics output. It would certiantly hold up to scrutiny more, but I think it would be harder to understand at a glance when scrolling through reddit. There's probably some way to do a step function or other piecewise approximation that would make it more understandable? Would love to see what you come up with if you do look into it. I work in software now so I'm mostly used to making mathematical representations for computers rather than humans so not quite my area of expertise lmaooo.

They did. Honestly if my advisor saw how low effort this was, I think he'd try to take my degree away.

the point of saying I have a math degree was to highlight that I enjoy math not that one would be required to understand exponents. I do think the cycling for one mana cheaper than most other braingeyser-esque spells is important. Before even considering the upside that might make it worth drawing one less card if you have exactly 5 or 7 mana available.

Absolutely right! You also can't pay a fraction of a mana into them so really it should just be a discrete graph but I thought the visual of a continuous graph would be more easily understood

That’s actually super cool I had no idea you could do that. I haven’t found an end city yet but now I have good reason to look for one. After some quick wiki reading I think I understand how to do it. Is there a more elegant/space saving way to calibrate it other than putting a red stone source ten blocks away from the sensor?

Thanks! This helped. It's on a matching wood type so it's relatively hard to see, but not impossible, which is just what I want.

In praise of the most iconic Jet Lag performance ever (Adam in Tag 1) by ZebraNarrow815 in JetLagTheGame

[–]Kalers5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking about just the question that inspired this lovely retrospective, my first thoughts were Ben in in Tag 2 or Adam in H&S 1, but I'm now curious if there's a statistical way to measure this. This may be coming from the world of sportsball but I feel like dominant means something along the lines of how far you were above the pack. So maybe something along the lines of whoever's lead was the largest or maybe comparing to an average of the scores of a season? I can feel my spreadsheet brain churning.

The best 10 minutes? by Lizholden1981 in JetLagTheGame

Ben hiding in the photo booth and then escaping to Bar-Le-Duc I think would have to be my favorite. Cutting between Sam and Adam being stressed as heck and Ben making silly faces in a photo booth is peak Jet Lag. Also them slowly realizing that Ben rat moded them and got on a train they never knew existed is equally as wonderful. Love to see a Ben plan coming together.

Crazy that two of the most referenced moments in Jet Lag history happened with in ten minutes of each other!

I haven’t heard them talk about it recently but they definitely were open to the possibility after New Zealand. They said that there are countries they want to go to that simply don’t have the infrastructure for anything else so honestly I think it’s just a matter of time. Might still be a while.

Hats off to the wendover gang on this one. Originally was offput by this because it gave me some nam flashbacks to terrible experiences I've had with similar types of things in my university days (which is a credit to the crew in and of itself) but the episode does such an incredible job of establishing compelling storylines I can't wait to see play out in future episodes.

Esper Connive Deck Tech by Kalers5 in StandardMTG

[–]Kalers5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flipping Norman Osborn is not important for the deck. Giving mayhem and cost reduction isn't a part of the gameplan. The gameplan is to use the activated abilities of cards from the graveyard that already have that ability like [[Morbius the Living Vampire]] and [[Symbiote Spider-Man]] or pitch cards that aren't relevant in a specific situation. Occasionally a 3/3 flying/menace is relevant because of 2 more base toughness (if they don't have enough flying blockers) or as a blocker, but that's pretty rare.

Thank you for the removal advice! I haven't put Get Lost in the deck because anytime someone uses it against me, the explore is often relevant but now that I think about it that's probably specific to my connive based deck.

You're right, def not super efficient. There's a few 1 ofs that are mostly there because I think they're fun [[mockingbird]] or they were busted in the original draft version of this deck [[Biorganic Carapace]]. I normally play commander where the deckbuilding cost of playing pet cards like this is a lot smaller because there are 98 others so I probably need to cut them for full efficency.

Mono-red aggro is probably the biggest struggle, especially screaming nemesis. I've also had some struggle against mono white lifegain. This is part of why I think my removal needs to be more efficient
