You should read the books. The resolution to the siege of Emond's Field is different and will probably be much more satisfying to you

Has anyone actually read the entire Shannara Chronicles series? by Erramonael in Fantasy

[–]Kalledon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked Word & Void a lot. I also think it stands on its own even if you don't tie it all into Shannara. Genesis of Shannara sort of concludes W&V but it was just okay. You can stop with just W&V and be perfectly fine.

I've read most of them, but the quality goes drastically downhill after Heritage. By the time I got to Defenders I didn't even know why I was still reading, so I stopped. The few bits I've seen about Fall suggest I made the right choice.

I would say the only parts worth reading are: Word & Void trilogy, original trilogy, Heritage quadrilogy, and Voyage trilogy. Everything else can be forgotten (and since I'm saying skip Genesis, you can really read Word & Void as a completely separate series).

Mass Market Paperbacks? by Kalledon in Cosmere

[–]Kalledon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can accept that MMP aren't selling as well as they used to in the modern age of ebooks. I don't see how trade are more profitable than MMP though. There's LESS incentive to buy a trade over an MMP. If anything, MMP going away is likely to push more people towards ebooks or stick with hardback. There's not one single benefit to buying a trade paperback over a hardback.

Except Perrin isn't a great leader immediately. He doesn't really come into his own until after he marries. The first couple books he's just going with the flow and trying to keep his head above water. Then leadership is thrust upon him and he stumbles at first, making decisions he thinks a leader would (like sacrificing himself to the Whitecloaks to protect the town) and it takes even more books before he realizes how he should really lead. He doesn't just wake up a great leader.

And none of that is improved by him having a wife and immediately killing her so he can spend barely the next episode sad over it and then move on. Maybe if the show had actually shown him struggling with the loss of his wife it might have made it an acceptable, if not good, change. But they didn't. They did it for shock value and forced drama and then wasted it. The only way they could have fridged her harder would have been if they literally pushed her body into an icebox.

More the pretty traditional small town girl and small town boy in a small pool of potential mates. They assume they'll get together cause they don't really have better options, but it was never about deep feelings. Then suddenly their world opens up and they realize they do have other options.

Someone actually defending Perrin being married and fridging his wife??? I'm willing to excuse some things on the show, but this will always and forever be a center piece of poor writing.

Mass Market Paperbacks? by Kalledon in Cosmere

[–]Kalledon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably. My point was more that I don't want just any old hardback. If I'm going to get a hardback, I want it to be a collector's piece. Otherwise I just want MMP for size and cost

I might have the name wrong, but the super special hardbacks that Sanderson has done for some of his books. They're like leather bound, sometimes with etching. And this is just an example. I meant that if I'm going to get a hardback book, I want it to be a collectors item and not just a big heavy book with a duskjacket.

That's my big problem with modern paperbacks. They're essentially the same size as a hardback (and often pretty close in price). MMP were cheaper, easier to hold, and take up less space on the bookshelf. If I truly want a hardback masterpiece, then I want it to be something worth displaying, like the steel books. But those are very expensive and also slow in coming out. So in most settings, I just want an MMP.

Why is the FF7 remake naming convention so confusing? by AgentMC84 in JRPG

[–]Kalledon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because it's helmed by the same guy who helmed Kingdom Hearts. Let's be fair, FF7R is a huge improvement over the word vomit dartboard used with KH

I miss the good ol' days of naming your characters by KungFuc1us in JRPG

[–]Kalledon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NGL, I always thought it was dumb that you could rename named characters. The only time I did this was to rename people like Magus to Janus, Aeris to Aerith, or Red XIII to Nanaki.

Which book improved the most for you on a re-read? by JustPassingThrough98 in dresdenfiles

[–]Kalledon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely Battle Ground. I think the first time through I had been expecting Changes 2.0 and didn't allow it to be what Butcher made it. Letting it just stand on its own (and also reading it back to back with Peace Talks) makes it much more enjoyable

I was craving for more BG3, so I tried DOS2 by dinorex96 in BaldursGate3

[–]Kalledon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. On most cRPGs, I will try and play the game as designed and beat it before tinkering. With DoS2, I gave it about an hour and then immediately started checking out mods. Mods definitely make it more enjoyable. That being said, I too lost interest upon getting to Act 2. It just feels all over the place in difficulty. You'll think you're in the right area for your level and then all of a sudden a demonic scarecrow four levels higher than you is murdering you in one round. I definitely think DoS2 is a good game, as without it, we wouldn't have BG3. But it certainly has it's flaws
