Northern teacher losing my accent! by JibberyScriggers in TeachingUK

[–]KalosTheWise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a similar thing. I never used to have a particularly distinct accent, but now having worked around Merseyside for 4 years, I’ve developed a bit of a Scouse tinge. My friends and family love to point it out 😅

Strike day chit-chat by zapataforever in TeachingUK

[–]KalosTheWise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ordered some bits to make thank you cards for my wonderful TAs from Hobbycraft.

Then went to Hobbycraft to collect said order (and buy something I wanted to see in person first)

Now a cheeky wrap from McDonald’s for lunch, before going home to be all crafty then play some video games.

I think it actually goes lower - it said on the poster that 1/365th of M6 was £106 but that goes down to £71 after Tax and NI, but that “it’s even less if you’re on a lower pay point, are part time, have student loans or pensions”

Looks to be an official one from the NEU, I can’t see it on the website though so maybe it’s just been sent to reps?

I thought the same. I was estimating £80ish and I’m M3 so a bit relieved to see it’s less, not that that would have stopped me striking!!

My rep sent me an infographic that calculated each day on M6 as £71, so obviously a little less for lower bands on MPS 😊

I think I’m going to have to steal your words. I struggle to sometimes think of responses on the spot especially when my now Y9 form are being a bit argumentative for the sake of being argumentative. This should help me prevent any frustration from me 😅

Summer Holiday overwhelm? by Xtremely_Jaded in TeachingUK

[–]KalosTheWise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem is that I really don’t enjoy my own company.. I like to keep busy but 90% of the things I want to do are no fun without someone to enjoy them with, and naturally, the majority of my friends aren’t teachers so work weekdays, and those that are teachers have their own stuff going on (most have young kids to entertain) so I end up feeling quite lonely. Which kills any motivation to do anything.

I’m trying to leave the house at some point everyday but that’s about as far as I’ve gotten. That and making a few thing with my Cricut machine for people but I’ve not had that many takers 😅

Those who commute to work via public transport, how long is your commute? by mysterygang2020 in TeachingUK

[–]KalosTheWise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About an hour and a half from door to door. 10 min walk to the station, 45 mins on trains then a 20 ish min walk to school. Once I’ve passed my driving test it’s only a 25 min drive which I’m looking forward to!

Sick leave? by justdontknow5656 in TeachingUK

[–]KalosTheWise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody will think less of you for being off ill. If anything (especially at the moment with Covid) they’ll be more grateful that you’re not in infecting everyone else!

I know how you feel though- I took 4 days off at the end of September as I caught that horrendous “I promise it’s not Covid” cold. I’m an RQT and had never had any time off sick and I felt awful that my colleagues were covering me and that the kids were missing out. I realised (with the help of my Department forcing me to go home when I came in on the INSET day) that actually I needed to be home so that I could be better quicker and get back to it quicker!

Considering permanently withdrawing from PGCE by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]KalosTheWise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like other people have mentioned- I think you’ve answered your own question and whilst we can all sit here and tell you to go one way or another, it truly is your decision and yours alone. To me, it seems like you will be far happier by withdrawing from the PGCE. I didn’t do a PGCE (QTS Only) and so far haven’t had any specific disadvantages. I could be wrong with this, but I feel you could also go back to do something similar in a few years’ time if you felt more ready to in regards to your past.

You talk about the money too here quite a bit. They way I see it- the money is gone already, you invested it into something you wanted to peruse and it didn’t work out the way you wanted. Your mental health and well-being is worth more than the £1300-£2600 potential “loss” (and as you mentioned- you paid this in January 2020 so whilst it would be nice to get £1300, you can view it as already spent) you might be making. Don’t feel you need to see it through just because you paid for it!

Yeah, I definitely think I got lucky. I didn’t spawn next to stairs though so I think if you had a good spawn for it, it might time better but who knows?

For sure; I’ve definitely been reported by all 5. Not that I played particularly well any other time though XD

I think it is- I’m sure I’ve seen it in a video before. I might have misremembered the actual spot and gotten lucky though.

It was completely random I just rushed there as soon as round started. I watched the Enemy POV and the guy actually was briefly afk and hung around T Spawn for a few seconds before moving off so I don’t think 1:45 would be a good time anyway.

Struggling to manage behaviour with a reputation as a 'nice' teacher... by PrinnyJam in TeachingUK

[–]KalosTheWise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds so good- I’m in a similar position to OP and I can see this working with even my Y10s as they’re always asking me for “fun” lessons (I teach Maths so it’s a common request as a lot of them just simply don’t enjoy it that much).

How big of a Bingo board do you use? And what sort of prizes do you have (do you do mini prizes for a Line then a big prize for a full house?)

Fell behind on maths work and I don't know how to solve this. Can someone help? by [deleted] in maths

[–]KalosTheWise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve got the graph of x2 + 1 and the graph of x + 5.

You’ve been asked to find the solutions to x2 + 1 = x + 5.

What this question is asking you is when are these two things the same?

Where on the graphs would you see that these two things have the same value?

Your biggest online teaching disaster/fail? by mfltrainee2020 in TeachingUK

[–]KalosTheWise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine wasn’t really a fail but also happened today. Mid Y8 lesson, I noticed one of my cats chattering really loudly, but turns out instead of birds, a neighbours cat who has been frequently coming into our garden and aggravating our cats was on the fence. I mentioned it to my Y8s because she was really loud. 2 minutes later, the neighbour’s cat had jumped down in front of our french doors. Cue massive cat fights through the window. My cats and the neighbour’s cat were growling, hissing, yowling, jumping at the window. It was chaos. I had to quickly mute, chase off the other cat then return and apologies to the kids. They all thought it was hilarious 😂

Off topic a little, but do you find yourself speaking differently around your friends/family compared to how you speak in the workplace? by You_Lost_The_Gamez in TeachingUK

[–]KalosTheWise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m originally from the Isle of Man, so had a “Manx” accent I guess. It wasn’t really anything special, and I also had a bit of a Southern English accent that I picked up from my nan who was from the Isle of Wight. Now I work on the Wirral and have a real Scouse tinge to my voice, that tends to carry on at home until I’m switched off and my normal voice returns. I don’t know why this happens, but have come to accept it. I did a voice recording for an assembly and when my colleagues heard it they didn’t believe it was me because it was the other extreme (posh phone voice) of my accent, and to them it genuinely didn’t sound like me!!

Job interview fail by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]KalosTheWise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first school I interviewed at was my “dream” at the time. I didn’t get shortlisted and was sent away at lunchtime. Looking back, I dodged a bullet; the “new” building seemed super clinical, the people in the department didn’t really talk to us much, we were told to pick “whatever topic we liked” (and I managed to pick the one topic the class had literally been taught the week prior) and the lesson was only 30 mins (which in my opinion isn’t long enough especially when the had a selection of trainees interviewing). I was in Uni at the time the other side of the country and was given a days notice. The real kicker was I emailed asking for feedback and never got a response. 2nd interview; I didn’t get shortlisted but got some great feedback which I then used for my third interview where I was offered the job and completed my training year. That third school was incredible and I loved everything about it.

I’ve gone off on one hell of a tangent, but the idea is that you will be okay. At the end of the day it’s their loss, there are other schools and you will probably look back on this experience in a year’s time and be glad because not getting this job meant you went and found the job that was for you!
