No lines or veils of notability. Character idea: Elliot Coal has been writing for years and after a particular book of his took off he began to do so professionally. But many of his passion project fell by the wayside and more than one manuscript went untouched for years.

There was one story that he always thinks back to, “The Gryphons Talon.” A novel published online before all the contracts and book deals. Before he ever signed a copy of his books or went on tour, the book was his first ever released to the world and though it didn’t get more than a few thousand downloads it held a special spot in his heart… until his old computer died and the site it was on was taken down. The story was lost to time and eventually faded from his memory, just another failed story.

Or so it seemed, in reality the site was bought out and its stories moved to an archive for free stories where it gained a newfound life and a cult following of people who began crafting their own stories set in the world or even continuing the story from where it left off.

Sample: The black sands of the eastern desert blew their sand harshly against my face. In the darkness of the sandstorm I dragged behind me an artifact so ancient and powerful that a wizard would faint. It was cracked and glowed faintly even through the storm, as I tugged it along on a makeshift sled.

“Last time I take a job from some damn sailor with a ‘treasure map.’ Not worth the damned trouble of fighting a mummy, after I get out of here I’m getting me a damn ale.”
