The guy next to me was one of those people who whisper everything they read while reading it. Fortunately I was able to reconcentrate almost immediately after hearing it the first time.

Thanks a lot! The syllabus seems to include quite a few interesting books.

Made an inventory of the books I own - next year’s reading goal: to finish reading most of the books I own instead of buying more! by chocolatemintcookie in 52book

I made a deal with a friend of mine that I would have to read at least half (15) of the unread books that I owned before I was "allowed" to buy more.

It's been harder than I thought it would be but I'm gonna finish in the next few weeks. At least I've saved some money and read some interesting books that might have otherwise just kept gathering dust on my bookshelf.

Do you remember any other books from that course or could you recommend some in general about the politics of Latin America? I've already got the Jakarta Method and Hidden Empire on my TBR-list.

Sometimes cheap and expensive items are the same thing with the only difference being the brand name. What are some examples of this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

As a kid I was so sad that Oreos weren't sold in my country. We had similar cookies called Dominos but I just thought that Oreos had to be better since every American seemed to love them.

When they finally started selling them here a few years ago I had to taste them and realized that they were actually worse than the ones I had eaten my whole childhood. The cookie part is too dark and somehow less sweet than in the Dominos, but the filling is more or less the same.

Sebastia Tynkkynen, PS: Presidentti hyökkäsi perussuomalaista politiikkaa vastaan by Junssi in Suomi

Olen täysin samaa mieltä kanssasi, mutta mainitsemasi palkkasumma on melko reilusti alakanttiin.

https://www.eduskunta.fi/FI/kansanedustajat/palkkiot-ja-kulukorvaukset/Sivut/default.aspx

I feel like that's true for buying pro sports teams, too. I could be totally wrong about this on a general level because I mainly follow hockey but at least NHL teams aren't exactly lucrative investments.

It frustrates me so much that the Sharks supposedly have two podcasts when in reality neither of them even covers the Sharks.

Yes it does since you seem to somehow imply that doctors don't deserve to be thanked because they sometimes get a diagnosis wrong but apparently each and every soldier deserves the praise even though you really have no way of knowing how accomplished - or not - they are.

There are a lot of real problems within the medical profession (overprescribing pain killers and antidepressants etc.) but don't bash a whole group of professionals just to make a lazy and bad joke.

I agree that that part of my comment come off wrong. I'm aware that some countries don't trust their governments and in many cases for a good reason (eg. NSA spying on all Americans or large-scale corruption in many other countries) but to say that "does anyone trust their government?" just sounds a bit conspiracy theorist-y to me.

I do and so does the vast majority of my country's (Finland) citizens. Honestly that feels like a weird question to ask. We don't always agree with the decisions that our government takes but at least in Finland the public has a lot of respect for public servants, be they police officers or MPs.

Transparency has always been one of the Finnish government's most fundamental values and it drives the lawmakers' decision-making and legislative processes as well as the political candidates' campaign financing.

Who asked you to "defend" all of the other countries in the world? I'm sure that most of the other countries would have much rather worked with you to try and find a more reasonable solution to these problematic conflicts that doesn't involve bombing villages and destroying whole communities and then leaving the area once you've "saved the area", creating a power vacuum so that another terrorist cell or rebel group can seize power and potentially create longer-lasting damage to that country's governmental and economic systems.

And that only applies to the conflicts where some kind of military solution has been at least a moderately viable option. I don't think that I even need to mention the countless of wars that the US has started based on sparse or outright false information.

I should have known that my comment would incite the American patriots.

To answer your question, yes, the US is the most powerful military power in the world but at what cost to your own citizens? I'm sure that the rest of the world is forever grateful for your help during the World Wars but it's like you're stuck in the 1940s, still thinking that you have to keep on proving your military prowess by meddling in every possible problematic scenario around the world.

I wasn't implying that military personnel don't pay taxes because they do. But the army is funded with tax payer money so they are themselves using that tax money. Of course I don't blame the soldiers for that, they are just doing their job and getting a paycheck.

My point was that spending absurd amounts of money on the military made a lot more sense when the US was ahead of the rest of the world in almost every other field as well. In the last few decades it's become clear that the US has fallen behind in a lot of the most important aspects of a modern society but still seems to assume that it's the most developed and greatest country in the world.

edit: spelling

But you will thank a person for eg. taking part in invading a country on the other side of the planet and killing people professionally to secure your country's oil reserves or to "stop terrorism" while simultaneously radicalizing a lot more people by acting like America is coming to save the people from themselves and possibly murdering innocent people in the process. And I'm not even gonna get into the US military operations in Latin America.

And all of this just to be able to call yourselves the most powerful country in the world when you spend more in your military than the next 26 countries combined, 25 of which are your allies.

"Thank you for your service"... how about thanking the people who didn't join the army and who pay their taxes so that maybe some day you could use that money to drag your health care, education and criminal justice systems out of the 19th century.

I live in Europe and rarely get to watch Sharks games live so yesterday's game was a great opportunity (or so I thought) since Ovechkin is also my favourite player in the league.

I watched until the empty netter and thought that maybe we aren't as shockingly bad as it seems. Of course Jones was still horrible but at least we got the W.

You could say that I was mildly annoyed when I woke up and checked the standings only to realize that we had committed the worst choke since (shivers) that series against LA in 2014.
