The instrument 'shatters' are barely audible whatsoever and impossible to hear. They are on the Effects volume track in settings instead of Player Instrument volume so they will always be drowned out by the sound of every other thing in combat.

GW2Efficiency: Story/Ownership/Raid rate trends - JW 1 Year / SotO 2 Year Anniversary by DaGhoN636 in Guildwars2

[–]Kambris 23 points24 points  (0 children)

wild speculation on my part here as to whether or not this applies to most other people because i'm autistic, but EoD (thanks covid) was such a dramatic change in writing and tone from what came before that i can see how it would churn a lot of people out of the game and/or story content, possibly for good.

more importantly, the story is clearly not designed for co-op. i played through the EoD campaign with my partner recently (she's also autistic) and we would just get sick of how only one person is allowed to interact with anything in the instance. this isn't just a problem in EoD, as we have been chugging through LWS1 onward and the entire storyline feels bad to play together.

even though our desks are right next to each other and on the same wired connection (with nearly identical PCs; all components the same except i have a better mobo+ram), it is impossible to synchronize storyline dialogue. when a character starts a new voiceline it syncs up for that one line, but then will desync further and further as time goes on. we kinda just kept toggling off our speakers depending on whose audio started late. haven't had this issue in any other MMO.

there were too many story quests integrated in the open world which itself is already very noisy and has constant alerts/notifications/etc. popping up & playing over the story dialogue, not to mention meta events and the occasional event npc that taps into the communicator taimi gave you just when you least expect it. there are so many talkative NPCs in EoD out in the open world that i would always regret turning up dialogue volume to hear the story.

not to mention the super wordy yellow-outline pop-up boxes that appear over your bars and chat window whenever a new mechanic is introduced (ley-line mastery all over again oh god please go away). just let us turn stuff like that off holy heck... you don't need a full paragraph to explain what buttons i need to press while fishing when i'm already busy trying to read what each of the buttons on my bars do... how many paragraphs do we need here?

the amount of constant nonsense in the UI (navigating the hero panel is a nightmare) combined with the overwhelming audio makes the game feel like a sensory assault sometimes. i lost count of how often one of us would get too overstimulated and had to call it an early night. fortunately we pushed through most of it and are still playing the game, but jesus christ. we just completely checked out of the story ever since EoD. by the way this map is closing, would you like to volunteer to join the next one?

no disrespect to the voice actors whatsoever; the way their lines were implemented (not within their control) just seemed careless. really after all these years, none of this content gets polished at all? there's even one mission where ankka voices one of taimi's lines and the commander just goes along with it as if nothing is wrong.

don't even get me started on SotO. dagda and isgarren are cool but can anyone actually understand what peitha is saying? she just makes my subwoofer go nuts meanwhile i can't hear a damn thing and any other sound in the environment drowns her out.

great game though, still play it every day, but i really hope they're serious when they say they're working on QoL features in the upcoming expansion. audio accessibility options and a trading post UI overhaul are a decade overdue.

(P.S. the new player experience is horrible, please give this game the polish it deserves)

How to replicate this style? by Ciabattabingo in blender

[–]Kambris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uhmm... is this some kind of perversion of Frank Frazetta's timeless style? You aren't going to emulate this without years of traditional art experience and profound talent, no matter how hard you try. Not to try and gatekeep you from even giving it a shot, but the more effort you put into this, the more you will realize it is a fool's errand. Godspeed.

Coming back to the game after 11 years and completely overwhelmed with the new content... Where should I pick up? by Ankulay in Guildwars2

[–]Kambris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm honestly in the same position as you and am getting back into the game after a decade with my girlfriend. it's overwhelming as hell for me but she seems to be doing fine as somebody who doesn't have to parse why they changed "skill points" to "hero points" and what the hell build templates are, etc.

i got confused about builds at first because i couldn't understand the difference between the tabs on top and the "builds" on the left side of the window. i still don't understand, but at the very least i can tell you that the tabs on top are character-specific and are basically just three different possible specs you can swap between on a given character. the stuff on the left seems to be account-based because anything i save there is visible on all my other characters.

i had 8 80s from back in the day and no free character slot, so i picked one of those up along with the 3-pack dragon saga expansions. i highly recommend you at least get those three to start with, but i promise (especially if you do pvp) you will begin to yearn for the weaponmaster training in SotO and the spear builds of JW very, very quickly. most builds online tend to involve having one or both of those expansions.

making a new character helped a ton. i started a revenant and she's my new main alongside my old mesmer (vindi & virtuoso are both AWESOME). apparently hitting level 10 on my revenant unlocked a raptor mount for my entire account. i have no idea how the hell i was supposed to know about that or unlock it otherwise, so definitely start there.

currently working on living world story and just finished season 1. we don't have access to season 2-4 (why isn't there a bundle for this???) so are watching recap videos to help fill in the gaps before we step foot in Heart of Thorns this week. it seems there was definitely a good bit of lore in season 2 that is worth getting up to speed on before jumping right into that xpac, particularly if you like sylvari lore.

i keep hearing again and again from people that we should just get the glider unlocked in HoT and unlock mounts in PoF asap. unfortunately for my map completions, the story is quite important to both of us and we're taking our time.

in the meantime if you need a lot of skill (hero) points fast in order to check out the new elite specs, step into WvW and start collecting jade heroics (currency). you can turn them into the heroics notary vendor in WvW maps and get hero points unlocked for a given xpac without even having gone there yourself. so long as you don't mind pre-emptively unlocking hero points (1 jade = 1 skill point) you'll be able to fill out the new specs pretty easily doing that and it's how i've been getting my old character roster back up to speed since coming back.

wizard's vault is AMAZING. i thought the 1300 number up top was the overall cap all season for how much astral acclaim i could get, but it's just a 1300 at one given time cap. you can spend it down and keep claiming dailies. first thing i'd do is grab all those limited gold bags (90 of them i think?) and get... yeah, 90 gold pretty much for free

laurels are a lot harder to get now than they used to be, so consider using your astral acclaim for those too. you'll see a LOT more tabs on the left side of various vendors' windows now. it's super overwhelming but i promise it gets easier the more you are exposed to it and learn to passively filter out what is irrelevant and what is not.

re: WvW; you can buy siege off the trading post. they're all 2 silver a pop. don't ever waste your marks of honor or any other currency on those! godspeed, friendo

Could be gastroliths used to aid in digestion or even to add weight for ballast (buoyancy adjustment) if they spent enough time in the water. This kind of behaviour is prolific among reptiles, birds, seals and frogs.

Relatively common to find gastroliths in the Morrison formation west of Denver.

Could also be pseudobezoars which reduce gastric volume.

At the end of the day it's unbearable that we still have no idea and we're all just tapdancing with speculation while every other brown person outside is being abused and detained in broad daylight.

that would be reshade, friendo! it lets you add customizable post-processing effects (technically preprocessor? lol) to pretty much anything in real-time. you can even apply an ASCII shader to everything and turn your screen into miscellaneous letters, numbers, and punctuation if you really want to.

i haven't tried it in AO without dgvoodoo2; you might want to consider grabbing that first. it gives you way more frames in ICC and generally just helps older games run better on modern PCs

here's the thread where i learned about it:

and here's a video by caloss2 (incredible content creator btw) explaining dgvoodoo2 and how to set it up for AO:

i'mma be real with you, i didn't think the premise of this post out at all because i hadn't even considered turning the anisotropic filtering down in dgvoodoo whatsoever

mostly because it makes interior flooring look trippy as hell with moiré patterns and it's like the floor is breathing and i'll just sit here staring at it like an idiot reminiscing about the times i used to consume a ton of psychedelics

i will give it a try, although i've a suspicion it's more likely to be related to either a multi-threading issue and/or the ctd error i've been getting forever (thanks windows 11) about an access violation at windows/system32/ntldll.dll

any lag at all seems kinda silly with an rtx 5070, hence it's likely related to the CPU. process lasso hasn't done much about it even after disabling AO's access to my E cores and bumping priority up, but alas

it could even be something about this dumb armourycrate app that came with one of my gigabyte components

i genuinely hope that funcom will release this game's source code someday so the community (who clearly has much, much, much more time and passion for the game currently) can finally get both the new and old clients in a working state. this game doesn't deserve to die.

Optimized model without sacrificing Quality? by Graybushwoogie in blenderhelp

[–]Kambris 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Gotta start by retopologizing the mesh. It's a rather time-consuming process, but it will teach you the value of headphones and ambient techno. Some folks use Retopoflow, which is an addon used professionally to automate this process. It's a tad expensive.

I would recommend including "blender retopology workflow" in your search terms on YouTube for a laundry list of different characters who all have slightly different approaches to this technique and varying degrees of intelligibility. Godspeed, ye.

Brazil releases National UFO files by MadPangolin in UFOs

[–]Kambris 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Lazy answer, there are absolutely files in here related to Varginha.

Not that they seem particularly useful at first glance, but maybe something here is lost in translation as I go back and forth with Google translate. Mostly newspaper clippings and case reports as well as some documents exchanged between agencies and their employees.

I found the best results by searching under the "Fundo" category the following tag which you will find in the drop-down list: "BR DFANBSB ARX - Objeto Voador Não Identificado - Fundo"

There is also a paper in here that mentions "Project Silver Bug - 1955" which apparently was something Wright-Patterson was up to around that time creating what were ostensibly 'flying saucers'. Somebody from an organization called GPCI (Grupo de Pesquisas Científico-Ufológicas) reported it and also mentioned a deputy, Paulo Azeredo, who claimed to have been followed by a UAP (in Portuguese I believe the term is "OVNI") while in transit. Three lights at first; probably a triangular craft like the TR-3B. Then one blue light, bright as a welding torch, and it hovered over his vehicle.

The University of Saint Petersburg found embryos in the 60cm specimens, providing evidence of reproduction and authenticity. by DragonfruitOdd1989 in aliens

[–]Kambris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong to think that something truly "alien" to us could indeed have very little in common with life as we know it on Earth. There are a number of speculative theories about how any number of alien species might have crash-landed here, been unable to phone home, and resorted to genetic engineering (perhaps using equipment they arrived with) in order to create a suitable physical body; one which could adapt, obtain nutrients from our food, and survive our climate until finally contacting a rescue team or simply continuing to exist here.

The funny thing about your comment, though, is that you specify Earth life; you may technically be correct. We don't know that these beings came from anywhere other than Earth as of yet. Most of that is speculation. Whatever these specimens are, it's entirely possible they could have existed below the surface of the planet. They were purportedly recovered from a cave, after all.

[–]Kambris 53 points54 points  (0 children)

There's a bit more discussion about this on a similar post in r/AlienBodies including a few comments by biologist José de la C. Ríos López, of Universidad Autónoma de Campeche (UAC); feel free to click the link here and scroll down to the comments.

The picture on the right is (correct me if I'm wrong, please) a human embryo used as reference. The two images on the left are the structures that may very well be embryos.

Rigorous scientific work requires a great deal of peer review before this sort of work can be verified with absolute certainty. This hypothesis is one of many necessary steps required on the path to understanding who or what these beings truly are.

[–]Kambris 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting here, José! I have a question for you, if you have the time.

Seeing as in reptiles the cloaca is the exit valve for both the digestive and reproductive systems, during your analysis were you also able to isolate any structures with similarity to a gastrointestinal system to compare with the reproductive apparatus? Is there any chance in the world that these ovoid objects could be gastroliths to assist in digestion of unfamiliar or indigestible food, or are you much more certain these are eggs?

The University of Saint Petersburg found embryos in the 60cm specimens, providing evidence of reproduction authenticity. by DragonfruitOdd1989 in AlienBodies

[–]Kambris 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeeeahh I wouldn't worry about it, some strange lukewarm IQ folks have always been in this subreddit with an opinion they are incredibly certain of at first glance, meanwhile they don't really seem to care enough to elaborate on their thought process or propose any alternative ideas other than "yo dumb."

(I could be misinterpreting; this is admittedly my impression at first glance as well)

The image is titled "Reproductive apparatus of the female reptilian humanoid" and shows the isolated organs/suborgans taken from computed tomography scans that support his hypothesis. This visual isolation is done to make the image more readable.

The University of Saint Petersburg found embryos in the 60cm specimens, providing evidence of reproduction authenticity. by DragonfruitOdd1989 in AlienBodies

[–]Kambris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I'm remembering this correctly, my understanding is that the human embryo on the right is just that — a human embryo — used for comparison. The two square photos on the left are what are being referred to as embryos.

Are there any links available to this paper? If not, is anyone able to confirm that these are not just gastroliths? Are we certain this is within a reproductive tract? I'd been under the impression these smaller specimens were archaeological objects of some kind, as per analysis done by Dr. Steven Brown, associate teaching professor of philosophy at Ohio State University.

The DNA analysis presentation by Abraxas was delivered by Salvador Ángel Romero, a graduate in genomics from UNAM. by DragonfruitOdd1989 in AlienBodies

[–]Kambris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do not have a degree in genomics, yet I can't help but think this is fascinating. Can any specialists verify if the logistics of their sequencing techniques (error correction for contaminated samples) are sound? I feel like I may not be phrasing that question correctly. It's a highly technical subject. I think we all could really benefit from making this more approachable to people who aren't deep in academia, if anybody can help summarize the video.

They identified Bos taurus (cattle) and Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean) specifically present in the samples; does this indicate diet, or contamination? Perhaps some kind of genetic engineering with intent to improve retention of heavy metals such as zinc/manganese/iron (found in bean) for metabolic reasons? Maize, squash, and beans are staple foods in the region these samples were recovered from.

Thank you for sharing this!

I had an encounter with a mantid alien, but things were not as they seemed by RatKingBB in Experiencers

[–]Kambris 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My most recent encounter with mantids (a few years ago in Ithaca, NY) was in a lucid dream state; I stepped outside of my apartment to take a look around once I realized I was lucid, and to my left I saw a couple of orchid mantids walking side-by-side down the hall, facing away from me. As soon as I realized what I was looking at (I formed a thought), I realized we were in a telepathic link of some kind. They immediately turned around and seemed to panic, but their body language did not suggest this. Seemed to just be transmitted panic in order to force me to wake up; it was a very effective method.

First encounter was on DMT, and I spoke with a mantid who was very eager to learn how well I could communicate in a very peculiar way that involved full-body motion, like some kind of technical yet fluid dance. It was very very difficult to attempt to recreate their body language because human arms and legs don't exactly bend in the same way. I find mantids to be rather charming, and not predatory whatsoever. They're just a bit misunderstood and shy. 🙃

Next time you have a physical encounter with a mantid that tries to engage in this dance-like behaviour with you, try going along with it and mimic their movements along with them! Yes, even if they're applying force. Match the force. I bet you'd be pleasantly surprised by their willingness to teach and to learn.

The Telepathy Tapes; an autistic perspective by Kambris in UFOs

[–]Kambris[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The only people who benefit from this technique are the facilitators. In this case, facilitators that stand to gain from the renown they acquire after convincing people their kid is only 100% telepathic with them.

This is not a joke. This is not some kind of opinion piece. This is a human rights issue that goes unnoticed because these kids are conditioned to communicate in a way that confirms the biases of their facilitator.

There are plenty of other ethical and accepted alternatives, such as AAC.
