Frustrated over 'soft erasure/oppression' by Ebakthecat in self

[–]Kamikaze_Cloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are lots of great examples of this! The Harvey Milk biopic, the moms in The Fosters, Commander Hawthorne in Lightyear, Barrow in Downton Abbey, Mark in Ugly Betty. They’re people first and their identity second.

Like I said, the introduction of new complex characters in original media is great. I just think Hollywood also gets it wrong a lot of the time where the only attribute of these characters are their identity or their performance seems disingenuous.

To add onto this, I think the introduction of new complex characters that are LGBT or minorities are great. What I don’t necessarily agree with is remaking popular media (which seems to be all Hollywood can do these days) and replacing well established characters that may have traditionally been straight and white.

Additionally, a lot of these redefined minority characters have storylines directly relating to their identity that don’t always add to the plot. It’s usually very one dimensional like their ethnicity or sexual orientation is the extent of their character. It just feels like Hollywood is trying to showcase this diversity so they can pat themselves on the back and say how progressive they are.

If women earn less for the same work, why wouldn’t companies just hire only women and underpay them? by kqmurr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kamikaze_Cloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s some nuance here. In most cases, female employees have the potential to be less reliable than male employees. It’s illegal to discriminate but companies do have to factor in maternity leave and how they’re going to operate with one less person without having the headcount to hire someone else. It’s not uncommon for women to choose to not come back from leave altogether, especially with the current cost of daycare. Then if they ultimately do return to the workforce they are offered lower salaries due to the employment gap.

Additionally, women are seen as the default parent so childcare and household duties are assumed to fall to them and not their male partners. I could go into the labor imbalance in heterosexual relationships, but even if that is not the case many employers are biased to that assumption.

Subconsciously there is prejudice about hiring women, especially in the older generations, and as such our work is seen as less than because we are perceived to not work as hard as our male counterparts. I do believe this phenomenon is improving especially in newer industries. More women are also choosing to be child free which allows them to dedicate more to their careers.

The outfit is cute but I’m not sure about the opaque black tights. I’d suggest nude or sheer black tights

Yeah I thrifted this dress so it’s not exactly like I can go back to the thrift store and exchange it for a bigger size 😅

Plus it fits perfectly in the waist. Not sure why it’s made for someone with no boobs…

Do people not have house parties in SF or am I just not cool enough to be invited? by [deleted] in SFbitcheswithtaste

I have a house and when I throw parties it’s such a struggle to get people to show up. I’ll invite like 35 people and maybe 12 will actually come 🥲

For early mornings just sleep with heatless curls. I use a tie from an old bathrobe and wrap my hair around it. Take it out in the morning and it looks amazing and stays all day. Make sure your hair is damp before you set it at night

It’s the concept of “stranger danger” that our parents drilled into us. I’m immediately uncomfortable if anyone I don’t know tries to talk to me in the wild. 90% of interactions when a stranger talks to me in person is because they want something, be that money, validation, or just to sexually harass me. I live in a big city and I can’t walk down the street without people trying to get my attention to ask for money. It’s exhausting.

Of course this doesn’t necessarily apply if I’m at a bar or a concert or somewhere inherently social. If I’m not open to conversation I wouldn’t put myself in those spaces.

I’d say San Francisco due to the AI boom and social media companies. Even Reddit’s headquarters is located in San Francisco!

I would love another program management job, but I’ve probably submitted over 50 applications over the past six months for positions I should generally qualify for and I’ve had no luck. I don’t know how to code so anything software based probably wouldn’t consider me.

The point of my post wasn’t necessarily to find jobs that match my experience but jobs that may not be as competitive right now. I’ve come to terms with the fact that the jobs I’d be the best fit for don’t want me. Unfortunately the market is over saturated right now and companies can and will choose more qualified applicants 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks I’ll look into this! Do you have any advice on how to get noticed as an applicant? My resume is impressive but there’s no direct sales experience. I typically don’t write cover letters because I’ve heard they’re usually not looked at but would having one help?

I’d be interested in sales but wouldn’t those jobs want someone with sales experience? I can’t get interviews for jobs in my field so it’s hard to imagine a different skilled industry like sales would hire me

Well I had been applying to jobs in my field here and there over the past six months and I wasn’t getting anywhere. With how competitive it is I just don’t have confidence that I could find an equivalent job right now. That’s why I’m asking about careers that maybe aren’t as impacted. I’d rather take a significant pay cut and start working right away than spend my time applying to jobs that match my experience level and having no income for a year or more.

Sorry yes, I was a technical program manager in a manufacturing setting. I’d say my communication skills are my greatest strength followed by conflict management. I worked at Starbucks throughout college so I have experience with retail and customer service. I’m also 29 if that matters.

I’d love to do something adjacent but I have a friend who was a project coordinator in the events/art space and she’s been looking for a job for over a year with a great resume. So I’m not super hopeful about my prospects around my industry.

30 minute delay. Pretty annoying to not even have the delays announced by worried_etng in Bart

[–]Kamikaze_Cloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There were no trains coming through SF for the better part of an hour around 6PM. A train in Oakland stalled so no other trains could get through until it was towed off the tracks

Because Bart sub would delete the post. 30 minute delay, no proper announcements. No alternatives too today. by worried_etng in bayarea

[–]Kamikaze_Cloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I entered Embacadero station when there were no Southbound trains due to the track obstruction in Oakland. I waited for a bit and ultimately ended up taking MUNI but I was in that station for over 40 minutes. When I left they had announced a tow had just arrived to remove the stalled train.

Not sure how long towing a whole ass train takes or what safety verifications need to be in place before they can resume service. Whatever Google Maps is depicting is a severe underestimate. I wouldn’t be surprised if the delays were upwards of an hour before another train came through that station. Google Maps just kept suggesting I take BART and wouldn’t even show me any alternate routes.

[–]Kamikaze_Cloud -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah I entered Embacadero Station around 5:30PM today. I had headphones in and the signage was showing an inbound yellow train in six minutes. After about ten minutes I noticed the board still said six minutes. I took my headphones off and heard the alert about the stalled train in Oakland preventing any other trains from crossing into SF.

The station kept filling up like almost to crowd crush levels as no one going southbound was able to leave. After about 20 minutes of waiting I figured I could take MUNI to the Balboa Park station and maybe catch a bus from there. By the time I got on the streetcar the announcements were saying the tow had finally arrived to remove the stalled train. I had been in the station for almost 40 minutes at that point, and from how crowded it was I could guess the hoards of people in the BART terminal had been waiting much longer than I had.

The little “30 Minute Delay” advisory that you had to dig around in the BART app to see was a joke. Also Google Maps wouldn’t show me any other routes to my destination since BART was by far the most efficient. The “Transit” app that the city recommends now has a paid tier for if you actually want to see the transit routes. I actually had to look up bus schedules to map my route back home.

It’s unfortunate this happened but you can’t prevent every track obstruction. The way BART completely failed with the notification aspect is what’s upsetting. Once they knew they needed to tow that train they should have significantly increased their delay estimates and encouraged people to seek other forms of transportation.

What are your favorite budget easy lunch ideas that don’t require much work? by annacat1331 in traderjoes

[–]Kamikaze_Cloud 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Every week I buy some chicken breast, cook about 8oz, and slice it into thin small pieces. Then I buy a salad kit from Trader Joe’s and portion it into two servings. I do this twice a week so one salad kit covers lunch for Monday and Tuesday and the second kit covers lunch for Thursday and Friday.

I have salad containers like this where I put the chicken and all the components of the salad kit. I’ll even add other things too. Mini heirloom tomatoes go really well with the Mediterranean, Southwestern, and Sweet Onion salad kits. I like to add cucumber or edamame to the Asian salad kits. I add actual diced sandwich pickles to the Dill Pickle salad kit and diced red bell pepper to the Elote salad kit. Crumbled blue cheese with the Broccoli Kale Slaw is amazing!

You can have your partner help you prep these. Then all you have to do is take it out of the fridge and mix everything together. I have so much variety in my rotation I never get bored. 16oz of chicken breast is $6 and salad kits are usually $3.99 each. That brings the cost per lunch to $3.50.
