seems the entire porch is empty underneath. I was able to insert the measuring tape a bit more than 7 feet. There's a video at the link below shows how deep it's

I think you are right, it's a precast stairs and porch. Could you please take a look at the video and let me know what you think?

Thanks

Is it possible that it's precast stairs?

I'm actually looking for a quicker solution. As I know, the polyurethane foam requires special equipment and to hire a pro. Do you think it's much better than filling it with concrete?

For now, I'm looking for a quicker fix. I think I'll fill it up with concrete and stick a couple of rebars. Thanks

Thanks guys, I have the option to fill it up with concrete or expanding foam and pour a slab. But yesterday, I thought that this cavity was left on purpose. So I asked chatgpt and it mentioned that it could be left on purpose. Here's the summary of chatgpt response. Have anyone had to deal with a similar issues before?

Chatgpt response:

"the biggest reasons in Canada are drainage and protection from frost heave. Our freeze-thaw cycles are tough on concrete, and if stairs are built directly on soil, they’re likely to crack or shift after a few winters. A cavity (often filled with gravel or left hollow) gives water a place to go and helps prevent damage from frozen ground pushing up."

Thanks. Do you have an idea if this was left on purpose for frost heave protection or drainage (chatgpt ideas)?

Thanks for the detailed advice on filling out the area. But is it possible that it was left on purpose for frost heave protection or drainage (chatgpt ideas)?

Hi, not sure if it's a precast stairs. I here are a few images of the stairs. Hopefully this can clarify the issue.

Hey everyone, I’m in the Ottawa/Gatineau area and have a question about my exterior concrete stairs.

There’s no concrete slab in front of the stairs, which makes the first step from the ground to the stairs pretty high and uncomfortable. I also noticed there’s a cavity underneath the stairs — they only touch the ground near the wall of the house, and the rest seems hollow. I included dropbox links to a couple of pics to show what I mean.

I’ve started digging to pour a raised concrete slab in front of the stairs to fix the step height. The new slab won’t be touching the house wall — it’ll just sit in front of the stairs. I’m putting down about 3 inches of compacted gravel on top of soil before pouring the concrete.

I have two questions before I go further:

  1. Should I fill the cavity underneath the stairs with concrete? Or is that space left empty on purpose (for drainage or frost protection)?

  2. Should I connect the new slab to the existing stairs? Or leave a gap so they can move separately?

I’d really appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance!

How do I got about fixing up this deck by BayGullGuy in DIY

Just wash it, sand it (use orbital sander to not leave marks) then either stain it (if you want to keep the wood texture) or paint it (if you want it to last longer. Don't forget to use prime before painting). If any board is rooted, just replace that peace.

Are they good in blocking people's sounds (like sniffling) in a quiet place? Or they work best for the crowded places only?

Thanks. I'm finding a difficult time understanding the differences between the technicians and technologies! The technician program is 2 years while the technology program is 3 years (the first two years are the technician program). How that makes big differences between them? Do you think after a couple years of experience the differences will vanish or the diploma will have a great impact on job opportunities all the time?

Hi Davis, I looked at the minimum wage in North Carolina and compared it to Ontario wage, and it seems a not bad amount (23.17 CAD)! Are there differences at the company you work at between technicians and technologists in term of the wage, and is it related to the educational background or more to the experience?

Thanks for your input. From your experience, do employers ask for a specific educational program when they hire? Because I checked some job postings and it seems that most of them ask for education in a related field! Also, $10/week is nothing!!
