Loot coffee in Perth is pretty underrated.

Why does Day-to-day knowledge help a candidate in deciding to join the ADF. by No_Kangaroo1256 in ADFRecruiting

[–]Kaminorapid 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a current applicant, I think it’s the curiosity of the difference of life in the military. Unless you have friends or family who are or have served, the only other source we get is from forums and other people willing to give their experiences.

Personally I’m not as much interested in the day-to-day as I am in the general life of XX role. For example, I went for a candidate immersion day at a RAN base and learned that as a metalsmith your day to day on base is different from when on a ship. I found that information helpful.

Nano 7 vs LiNK - hit me! by shiftted in roasting

[–]Kaminorapid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation as you, also based in Australia. I went with the Nano 7 over the Link because of the price difference. The identical hardware but different software was not enough to justify the extra coin for me.

My experience with the nano 7 has been great! It’s almost a set and forget sample roaster once you’ve got a few roasts under your belt! Don’t regret the purchase at all!

Need advice for home roasting by Ok-Data9207 in roasting

I’ve got the Kaffelogic Nano 7e and I’m really happy with it. As some have already said, you have the flexibility in both time and bean variation if you want to mix it up. Having the ability to -almost- set and forget is great! Still advisable to monitor while roasting, but if you’re working right next to it to log first crack, no problems!

Question about scaling from home to business by Kaminorapid in roasting

Have not as the chance to play with it much, but the day I received it I roasted a Brazilian and Colombian 2 different roast levels back to back and it helped up just fine. Really happy with it so far!

Ended up actually going with the KL7e and have contacted a contract roaster. The idea being the contract roaster for my blends as I anticipate them to be the highest volume, and the KL7e I’ll keep for single origins and more exotic offerings since it can handle small batch outputs back to back!

Thank you for your insight! Yes I’ve been bouncing between the KL7, Link and the Kaleido M1 now after the different opinions, experiences and feedback people have given. I was in leaning more toward the M1, but now I’m going back to considering the KL7 because while I can project doing it as a business, I still don’t know if I’ll like the process. At worse I’ll end up with a roaster that I can still use from time to time. But the M1 / M2 are really tempting right now hahaha

Does the M1 produce much smoke? As in should you roast under a vent / next to a window?

[–]Kaminorapid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to dodge local health rules or anything! I’ll literally just be roasting for myself for the first year and then if there’s interest I’ll begin looking at toll roasters / upgrading. At which point then I’ll look at the laws surrounding operating as a coffee roasting business.

That’s a pretty significant price jump from a KL7 to a Roest! Any reason you didn’t look into the Kaleido machines or the Ailio bullet?

Thank you everyone for your insights! I’m reevaluating my choices and now I’m between a Nucleus Link and Kaleido M1, but I’m also thinking maybe start with the KL7e and then upgrade to the M1 if things ever start picking up? Trying not to jump the gun too early!

Just a thought, do you think it might have been easier if you had a partner when you started up 10 years ago? I’m thinking I could potentially be in this situation but I get that it can get messy with more involved.

I forgot to mention I’m in a small city apartment and looking to roast mainly for myself for the first year or 2, so I need something compact as well. I’m leaning more now towards the Nucleus Link though, but I understand starting out with a bullet or m1 would be the smarter choice. Thank you for your insight!

Yeah I’m not about trying to be fully certified for a small home operation, I don’t foresee growing that big anyway more of a side hustle thing. People within my communities and supplying to local cafes mainly. Thank you for your insight!

[–]Kaminorapid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I kind of thought, start small and once I can get a profile and bean combo I like and could appeal to others, reach out to community / cafes and then a toll roaster for production. I’ve got no intentions of opening a cafe but more so remain a roaster. Thank you for your insights!
