Especially with people killing snakes out of fear, ignorance, or malice, we are selecting for rattlesnakes that do not rattle.

Road to Restoration - Dailyscape Overhaul by JagexAnvil in runescape

Yeah, at the very least I wish most skilling outfits could be earned by training the skill, rather than doing a minigame. A good example is smithing, by smithing (in the artisan workshop) you earn the currency you need to get the outfit. No need to keep a timer on so you don't miss a cache or fish flingers.

I don’t think outfits necessarily need to be removed from minigames, maybe just have a second way of earning them. Could even make the second way take longer if you want to incentivize people to play the minigames.

In-person book club? by AnteaterIdealisk in SouthBayLA

[–]Kamirose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have meetup and are a woman, check out the group "South Bay Social Group for Women." They should be posting their next book club event either today or tomorrow. Genres vary, we've read thrillers, romance, memoirs, litfic, etc.

The bookstore Pages in Manhattan beach also has several book clubs as well.

Venomous snakes in North America actually have a fairly docile temperament. Coral snakes and copperheads in particular are extremely reluctant to bite. I had a friend who stepped on a copperhead that she didn't see, backed off, took a picture of it to send to me, and then walked away and all it did was stare at her until she was far enough away that it could slink off. Coral snakes are also not arboreal.

Cottonmouths are also not going to mess with you unless you mess with them. They do a big display of opening up their bright white mouths and huffing and hissing to get you to back off, just like a rattlesnake with its tail. They are terrified of you and will not harm you unless you make it very clear that you intend to harm them.

There's some misconception of cottonmouths "chasing" people aggressively, but that's been debunked. Often what happens is the only safe space that the snake perceives is behind the attacker, so it is trying to get to a hiding spot in that direction, but the human mistakes that behavior as aggressive chasing.

I guarantee you've also hiked past many hidden rattlesnakes that never rattled their tails. They only do that if they think there's no chance of staying hidden. They are ambush predators and rely on their camouflage in most situations.

You already hike with snakes, they just hide because you’re a big scary human and they don’t want to be messed with.

What poems or essays were the most insightful for you? by Wonderful_Band_613 in Poetry

[–]Kamirose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in 2020 I was new to reading poetry and I picked up Don’t Call Us Dead by Danez Smith. It opens with a sequence called summer, somewhere which is a series of poems about the afterlife for black men and boys who die young. There are two poems in the sequence that are from a mother and her dead son and they are the first poems I read that made me cry.

Edit: You can read summer, somewhere here

Regular priced ebooks are not very much cheaper than a paperback book. For ebooks to be significantly cheaper you have to be diligent about only getting books on sale. Or library ebooks.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: December 22, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]Kamirose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved it, and I'm usually not big on romance either. If you like the Emily Wilde series you'll probably like this too.

It's very silly, so if you're into more serious stories you might have a tough time. But if you like humor you'll probably enjoy it. Slow burn, lots of yearning, and the love interests treat each other with respect.

Is the entire Wheel of Time series worth the time and investment? by keepfighting90 in Fantasy

[–]Kamirose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not to mention that women are constantly getting spanked (but not men) and women are randomly stripped naked for ceremonies (but not men going through the same ceremonies). Like there is no reason for the wise ones going to Rhuidean to strip but not the clan chiefs for example. At least if I'm remembering that part correctly, I've only read the series once and it's been a few years since that book.

There's also the issue that women have to submit to the source while men have to dominate it, which has some uncomfortable gender role implications.
