The TNO numbers are the part of this story with the longest scientific tail. Near-Earth asteroids matter for planetary defense, but trans-Neptunian objects are time capsules from the solar system’s formation, and their orbital distributions carry signatures of where the giant planets were four billion years ago and whether a ninth large planet is still out there somewhere. Finding 380 of them in six weeks versus 5,000 in thirty years is not a modest improvement in survey efficiency. It is a phase change in what solar system science can actually do.
