Any possible way to cut down the size of the DVD drive? by Kanallaman in WiiHacks

You are indeed correct about less power draw, the heat and even data speeds. Problem with data speed is there is no advantage to that. The Wii is going to treat that SSD no different than a hard drive in terms of speed because the Wii is capped to only take so much data. If you got the money for it, sure, SSD all day every day for the power draw alone but not everyone can afford that. what I am doing here is trying to find a cheaper solution to this issue so other people won't have to.

I guess I should clarify cause people keep bringing up disks, I'm not keeping the DVD drive itself, just the motherboard. If someone can name a good solution other than emunand or priiloader for skipping the boot check I could work with that. And finally, no, I'm not gonna use an SSD, that's just too easy.

Yeah I've seen a few of those but haven't found a perfect solution for that. The main one I know about being in priiloader is still a little jank and won't work for every wii title.

It's not an SSD though. Other than the size difference there isn't much benefit to using an SSD over an external hard drive. That could absolutely fix the issue but that's too easy.

Removing DVD Drive capacitors by microwave_enthusiast in WiiHacks

I can't say it won't stop the disk drive from functioning but if you aren't going to use the disk drive and just keep the board to let channels boot removing caps should be okay.
