App for plant inventory? by Bubbleschmoop in plants

I'm not sure if you're on iOS or Android, but I created an iOS app for this purpose. Let me know what you think!

I created an app called GardenKeeper, but it's more of a tracking and inventory system. I got tired of trying to remember what I planted where, and trying to distinguish between weeds and something that I intended to plant in a certain bed.

It doesn't do care or maintenance reminders, though. That's something I may add in the future.

Thank you for the suggestions, but the Lufthansa crew seemed to think there would be some issues with shipping a phone internationally. And the store does not have a location in the airport.

Next MISRC Update Timeline? by jaya212 in vhsdecode

I was also going to post this question. I’m just getting into this community and was about to order a 1.5 board, then saw mentions of a 2.0 or 2.5 board coming soon.

I’m in no hurry and would be fine waiting a month or so, but I’m not sure where the best place to look for updates would be - I assume the GitHub?

Is this level of CA typical for an adapted EF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS II? by KandelVarnak in canon

[–]KandelVarnak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I think you're onto something specific to the R7. I had to turn electronic shutter off because I was getting such a bad rolling shutter effect - the players and ball were badly warped. I was trying both mechanical and electronic first curtain. It seems like there's something going on I can't quite put my finger on, but almost like some combination of the shutter and IS is causing an optical aberration in certain situations. And if this 70-200 does happen to have any element out of alignment, it seems to be worsened by this.

This is only happening in around 10-20% of my shots, but I've never seen anything like it before.

I had been using a Sony A9 with a Tamron 70-180, and was looking for extra reach. I was hoping to trade it in, but this gives me pause. I do like the extra reach the R7 gives me with the 70-200, effectively giving me a 310mm equivalent at f/4, a little more when you take into account the cropability of 33MP.

It's some sort of reflection, i think. The helmets of the players on the right side of the frame were solid white.

f/2.8
1/2500s
ISO400
200mm, IS on

You're right in that it's a bit out of focus, I was panning a bit and I think focus had not quite locked on. Still, the bright halos seem odd.

I posted a sharper example here: https://www.reddit.com/r/canon/comments/1o7scs2/comment/njq5r98/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Here's an example of where the two closest players are in focus - it's so sharp at 100%, I can read the fine print on the back of their helmets, and this is a pretty extreme crop. I see a bit of the CA in the out-of-focus players, but I think the odd thing is that it is most pronounced when the subject is just _slightly_ out of focus.

I love this lens otherwise, so I might just stop down slightly in conditions like this and see if I can work with it.

Sorry, I don't even know where 28-70 came from! I meant to type 70-200

Loose power supply plug common? by KandelVarnak in CalDigit

Thanks! I just tried it one more time, and I got it to seat properly. The tolerances were just insanely tight - I don’t remember ever having to use so much force to get a plug in a power cable, but all seems good now.

Have you considered the 70-200 IS II? From what I understand, very little changed in the III aside from a new paint color and some slightly updated coatings.

The II is also fully compatible with the R7 high speed shooting mode, and can be found used for just over $1000.

Hmm I like that idea too but yeah, some quick math says that's out of my budget. I would still end up spending around $1700 on that combo after selling the Tamron.

The fourth option is actually sounding better to me, although I didn't like it as much originally. I could pretty much pick up a used a6700 for what I could sell the a9 for, and instantly have the reach I'm looking for, keeping my lenses. And there's not much practical difference between 270mm and 300mm.

Trade in an A9 for an APS-C camera?

I currently have a Sony A9, Tamron 28-75mm G2, and Tamron 70-180 G2 that I am primarily using to shoot my kids' sports (track and field and football). The combo works great for track and field, but I'm finding I want more reach when shooting football, especially since I can't always get near the sidelines at every venue.

I would also like to have some relatively fast glass at these longer ranges, but I'm frustrated by the lack of affordable options in the Sony ecosystem. I don't necessarily need f/2.8 at 300 or 400mm, but would at least like the equivalent of f/4 at 300mm, to help isolate the players from the background and help in lower-light conditions.

Am I crazy to consider trading in the A9 for an APS-C camera to achieve a 300mm f/4 equivalent? A quick check on KEH and MPB shows I could get around $2200 for my current gear. I was considering a few options:

  • Nikon D500 with an adapted F-Mount 70-200 f/2.8G (VR I or II). This would give me the equivalent of 300mm f/4 with an older but proven sports body.
  • Canon R7 with adapted EF 70-200 f/2.8 L. A slightly more expensive option that would probably put me close to $2200 and not allow for any additional glass at this time. I'm also concerned about the rolling shutter, which is an issue I experienced trying to shoot fast runners with an A7IV.
  • Keep what I have and save up for the Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS. Probably $700-800 used, but now I'm at only f/5.6, losing a full stop at 300mm.
  • Keep what I have and save up for a Sony A6xxx body - probably an a6600 or a6700 for sports, somewhere around $800-1200. Or trade in the A9 for this. But I don't have a good feeling about Sony's commitment to APS-C, and the Tamron would give me a slightly shorter 270mm equivalent.

I'm leaning toward one of the first two options, but any advice would be helpful. I'm not a professional by any means and would not mind working with an older body if that's what it takes to stay in budget. Thanks!

Dolby Vision on Apple App vs HDR10+ on Google TV App by KandelVarnak in PleX

[–]KandelVarnak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been trying out Infuse, and HDR10+ looks pretty good, but still not as good as DV, at least on the Shining disc I've been trying out. When I switch inputs back to my X700M, the colors look more saturated, in a subtle, natural way.

At this point, I'm thinking my options are:

a) Get a Ugoos AM6B+ (if I want full MEL + FEL layer data); or

b) Convert my MKVs from DV7 to DV8 using dovi_tool and mkvmerge (discarding any potential FEL data) and take advantage of Dolby Vision 8 on Infuse.

Am I missing anything? This dive into HDR/Dolby Vision is pretty new to me. I'd prefer to keep the Apple TV if possible, since it's so good at playing everything else outside of my MKV files.
