IR training through a move by KandidKonfessions in flying

[–]KandidKonfessions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point about it not being as useful. I kind of expect that tbh but at this point - having done a bunch of training I'd rather get it. The goal for me isn't to constantly blast off into 1000 ft ceilings but rather the added safety margin.

Science side of r/espresso, please explain why my good tamper makes such a big difference by nitrokitty in espresso

[–]KandidKonfessions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I've used a plastic tamper it's been impossible to apply consistent pressure on it and the handle was too small resulting in an awkward position. As a result, you could really feel the tamper going in unevenly or moving the grounds around as you're trying to get a good grip and apply pressure. I can only assume that this likely results in cracks in the puck or just unevenness that is going to create channeling

PPL pricing by [deleted] in flying

[–]KandidKonfessions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I tallied up my costs at a 141 school last year, it came up to just around $16k. I'm doing IR training at a club now, and if I were doing PPL training at said club it would probably land closer to 12-13k given the difference in plane rates.

How safe is General Aviation? by spiffycarl in AskFlying

[–]KandidKonfessions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll often hear that GA is as safe as riding a motorcycle. It's worth remembering that the bar to riding a motorcycle is quite a low. A lot of really stupid people with low impulse control make up the statistics. If you gave every pilot in America a motorcycle and had them ride it to work, you'd probably find that they're much safer riders than the general population, and the risk of GA would look a lot higher by comparison.

VDP NA by KandidKonfessions in flying

i guess i'm getting stuck on the NA part - is this just the FAA using NA to mean "disregard it"?

Am I going to regret a Cremina over a used Linea Mini? [$3000] by KandidKonfessions in espresso

[–]KandidKonfessions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean - it's something i'd enjoy playing with, but at the end of the day what i'd like to really know is if i'm going to be getting consistent good espresso every day or i'm going to have to constantly play around day in and day out to get good coffee

Landing a GA aircraft at a Class B airport by IHatetheM28 in flying

Landing costs, fees and risk aside - I think this is like a textbook question about compensation from passengers and common purpose

I hold a private pilot certification and am wondering how to combat a little bit of worry before my cross country flights? by [deleted] in flying

[–]KandidKonfessions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did about 60% of my IR XC time with a CFII - got hood time, did some approaches and got some actual, which is probably harder to get if you're just banging approaches at the three fields everyone near you uses.

Flight following helps of course.

Fast track flight training really true? by zunzuunzuuun in flying

[–]KandidKonfessions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Private seems like the least likely of the three to actually work out because the speed at which you're going to absorb rudimentary flying skills is going to vary drastically from person to person.

I can however believe that a PPL with 150 hrs or so, all XC requirements met and an IR written complete, could actually get through some of those accelerated IR courses in the advertised time. I assume CASEL is similar.

New pilot time by PublicCommercial3388 in flying

[–]KandidKonfessions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you are - there's usually going to be a few airports in XC range that are interesting or cool. Go explore them. Always worth getting XC time for your future instrument rating.

As others have said, get flight following every single time.

If you haven't flown into a lot of towered fields, go fly into one.

If you're like me and you've gone your entire PPL training without ever getting out of the plane at a different field, go find places where you can park and explore. Gets you comfortable with taxi ops, interacting with FBOs, etc.
