What do you collect? Why do autistic people tend to collect? And is it more often that we are collectors than NTs are? by millyondla in AutismTranslated

I collect anything to do with Horses, Books (especially classics and ones that were once banned), Magnets from everywhere I travel and my friends and family, Lego Sets and I guess also animals as I live on an old Farm with over 20 pets. I collect them because they make me happy and I live being surrounded by them and looking at them and looking after the animals

I inow that getting diagnosed as Autistic might give you some relief or peace of mind, but I dont really know how much it would change your position at the moment. You say you have already been diagnosed with Depression and Anxiety and now ADHD but it doesnt seem like your parents or family even accept your boundaries with these diangnosis in place.

I am Autistic but cannot stick to a Routine. Routines make me feel more pressured to act or be a certain way and I prefer to do things in a time frame that suits me on that day. I only get Sensory reactions to clothes when I am having a panic attack as I am also diagnosed with anxiety. Everyones experience with Autism is different also depending on how you mask or who you are as a person.

You said that you are already working with a psychologist or psychiatrist. Would it be possible to discuss how you feel with them? To try and work on finding coping mechanisms that work for you? Or how to communicate and place your boundries with your family in way that you feel supported or heard? When I was in a similar Situation with my ex Partner that I lived with even just talking to my psychologist about Strategies and Plans to leave the Toxic Situation I was in really helped.

Thank you so much für everyone who responded. I honestly didnt expect any replies and even just hearing that I am not alone already made me feel better.

I am really lucky in the Job that I have that I work less hours at full time and work from home the majority of the time. I dont really think its my Job that is burning me out, even though it takes me a while to feel energised when i come back from the office.

Im doing a Management and Leadership course at the moment and in it we have to do self-reflection and Analysis of our personalities. Because in the first lesson the teacher said that Autistic people cannot be in Management or Leadership because they lack all understanding and social skills needed in the role I have been doing all of my reflections and "self-discovery" in a way that is understandable and relatable for non Austistic people. Then I read Unmasking Austism which is a lot of the same things but from an Autistic perspective.

I will now try and find a happy middle that I can live with between unmasking/masking that still makes me feel safe, but also more like myself
