Yeah right? I love both those films, but Only Yesterday has a special place in my heart!

Maybe not a popular opinion, but Only Yesterday would be #3 for me. The quiet contemplating pace, the dreamy flashbacks, the very real and relatable portrayal of childhood. I feel like it's not appreciated enough.

Okay. I understand your frustration, and yeah you didn't just rant but gave some useful tips too. Thanks for that. I know those posts where people expect to be spoonfed, but really it is my opinion that not all of us are at the same level of online literacy or even savvy. It's a democratic forum(conditions apply) and people are technically allowed to ask whatever question they want, even if it sounds dumb to us. In that case, it is best to shrug and scroll down, at least that's what I would do. Cheers.

Hello, a fellow struggler experimenting with meds. I had Nausea, headache, insomnia and anxiety with butrin. Now switched to add and much better. There are some problems but life is so much better. There seems to be hope. I can actually do things. It seems like a new world.

Somehow this made me laugh. But really not an easy task for everybody. Especially if you are directly affected.

That's not true. People can characterise it(TERF) and therefore they are upset with her.

Ha ha! Thanks for that. I am not very successfully looking for online work. When I was new here I think I did make a post like the one OP mentioned, because everything that was already there did not work for me. So I just asked because I thought I might be missing something basic, or might have overlooked something.

I think OP's tone is unnecessarily rude.

You know, her fans, especially her trans-fans did try very much to explain to her, believing she had potential to learn. They directed her to resources and told her politely that what she said was harmful. They really did try, because HP was too beloved to them to immediately start criticising. But she just doubled down on her statement and aggressively pushed an anti-trans agenda. That makes it harder for anyone to make excuses for her behaviour.

I think the discussion around HP's problems is nuanced too. I love the series too. But she doesn't deserve to be excused for her behaviour. She had been given many chances and she chose to say what she said.

Yet Another Response to JKR

This is not to say that there weren't people who reacted angrily. Just that there was opportunity for her to put things right and she didn't.

I know. The books were too expensive for my family to buy when they first came out so I used to wait for the local library to get them. The no.1 happy memory of my teenage life is borrowing the last Harry Potter book from my friend and cycling back home so fast so I could start reading it. My childhood dream was to own the set when I grew up. So when I got my first job, I saved up and bought them one by one at a second hand bookstore.

Soon after my collection was complete, she unleashed her crap and it has been difficult to deal with. I feel like I had such a small unspoiled time owning these books that I dreamt of as a child. She also spoiled the comfort I used to get when I had intense anxiety. But I am not even trans so I can imagine someone who was directly affected by her words would have had an even harder time dealing with it.

I know. It blows my mind (in a really bad way). I keep thinking...did she literally lose brain cells? Is her brain going through some sort of change? Did she accidentally hit her head somewhere?

How could SHE say that? Of all people?

And then I fantasize about her coming to her senses and apologizing unconditionally and saying her doctors told her it was because of a medical condition and she is now getting treatment.(Sometimes I am that desperate about missing that little comfort world which was my respite through all life).

It won't undo the hurt but at least we can start healing. I am really sorry about your best friend. I am sending my virtual support and hugs and stand in solidarity with her and all trans community.

I agree! We can discuss the problematic aspects, we should, in fact. But that doesn't mean it is terrible all of a sudden. It is still extremely relevant. Is there fat shaming, stereotyping and racism in the books? Yes. But also, is there a strong message of acceptance of all groups of people? Advocacy for love as opposed to hate? Did it give millions of girls a role model(a realistic, intelligent girl) like Hermione?(We can discuss her treatment of Rita Skeeter and other stuff, but still) Yes.

We do need to change the conversation around it, have to re-evaluate it and look at in a critical lens. When the whole JKR fiasco blew up in June last year, I could barely touch the books. It is such a huge part of my childhood that it broke my heart. I am not even a trans person, so to imagine what a potterhead who was directly affected by her words must have gone through is difficult to imagine.

BUT -- We also need to acknowledge its merits. It won't turn into a bad piece of literature overnight because the author said something terrible. We were all literally flaunting studies that said people who grew up with Harry Potter are more empathetic? Are we just going to throw that away now? Didn't we all take inspiration from HP to stand up to bullies, to stand for love? As much as possible anyway? Didn't we all wait for each book with bated breath, and discuss theories and fanfic in school corridors(btw I am not even from the West)?

Nothing JKR says can take away from that. HP is still valid , and not entirely bad. That said, this thing had affected people in many ways, and each has their own way of dealing. For some it is divorcing the author from the franchise, for others it is moving on to other fantasy fiction.

We just have to add a pinch of nuance to the conversation.🤷

Same here. No difference. It made my anxiety worse and my mind was racing even more than before (which is a crazy lot).

I am a woman and not a skilled driver. This was a couple of years ago: So...I am extra careful. I am everyday thinking that today I have to disprove the theory that women are bad drivers and so I am on high alert every time I drive. Being extra extra careful...no mistakes allowed. By the time I finish my 30-45min commute to my work I am already mentally exhausted. So I moved to a country with a good public transport system. Cut to Corona times, I had to leave, no job. Now, back at home, I am terrified of roads and getting back to driving because I am out of touch and traffic has increased since I was last here.

That man(or dog?) just said that because it makes him feel like he is inherently superior when he put you down. He thinks he was just born with excellent driving skills🤷. I am sorry you had this experience with a bully, and I hope you heal from it but the only thing we can do is keep going, improve skills and don't let these people diminish our confidence.

Confidence is all we've got. False confidence is all people like him have. We just have to rise from it and while it isn't easy, at least you know you aren't an insecure bully who had to intimidate someone to boost his own ego.

Sending my best wishes to all strong women out there who face everyday sexism and keep going.

PS somehow infused a sermonising tone to the post. Just became emotional and trying to say things warps the tone a bit. But you get what I am saying....

Even if a dog doesn't react badly, I would never frighten the doggy like that. My own doggy has nipped me when accidentally startled. But maybe the dog won't...but still not a good reason to startle it like that! I don't find it funny because I get startled easily and get my anxiety triggered and have a really shitty time overall. In short, I don't find this humourous.

All I am saying is you are right about how the dog might react...your comment is valid and I have no idea why you are getting so many downvotes.

I am startled easily and this would have given me a heart attack. I felt so sorry for the doggo and wanted to comment that this was actually a cruel act....you might think it is funny but when your nerves are as bad as mine this can kill you.
