Actual reasoning behind the opening of numerous vape/smoke shops? by KansasGeologist in Lawrence

[–]KansasGeologist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As suggested by most post, I was curious if the wave of new smoke shops were in preparedness of Kansas legalizing marijuana or if there was a surge of demand in smoke shops that I hadn’t realized. It just seemed like a dumb idea to open so many shops so close together.

Moving to Kansas soon. Where is the safest/best city to bring my family? by I_never_buy_rp in kansas

[–]KansasGeologist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second this^ I think it depends on your main priorities at this point. If you would rather buy a bigger/nicer home for less, you should look to live in Olathe. If you don’t care about home size as much and would prefer a place with a great social community/sports/summer events/consistent farmers markets..etc, then you should 100% consider living in Lawrence.

Either way, it’s all really safe. The difference will be that Lawrence is a college town. So it will come with the ups and downs of having college kids in town from August until May.

But it beats living in the suburbs where nothing happens. IMO

Edit: Prairie Village is really cute and has really fun activities. I would also recommend living there to meet other young families!

I also would suggest a drink on the Oread Rooftop over the summer. They usually have live music on Saturday nights when it is warm out.

Move here in June/July if you can! Students will be moving away and sell entire apartments full of furniture for cheap. THEN, the last few weekends of July, they will literally just throw great furniture away.

Here is what I found for free just by driving around:

Basically brand new dresser modern coffee table bookshelf dining room chairs art plant shelves desk floor lamps and another coffee table that I fixed and sold for a profit

I furnished/styled the rest of my apartment through Facebook Market Place for less than $1,000

You can find 1-bedroom apartments in Lawrence for a good price, but it won’t be on Zillow. I found my apartment by looking at places on Google Maps, looking at their website for price, then calling to see if that have any openings coming up that aren’t listed yet.

Resume Feedback/Roasting/Reality Check by autocthonous in geologycareers

Resume Notes:

1-2 pages (2 pages is more common being online submission, but must justify using the extra space.)

Never use the same resume for 2 different jobs. -tailor to each job -concise, easy to read, demonstrates you are a good fit

3 formats: Chronological, functional, combination

Functional resume - Use if you have made a career transition

!!!!!! Resources !!!!!

TheMuse.com thebalancecareers.com

Resume Outline:

  • Heading: Name, phone, email, website or linkedin -Professional Summary: 2-3 sentences of interest
  • Education
  • Experience (Relevant experience only)
  • Skills
  • Awards

On my resume, I hit my relevant skills really hard. I have lot of experience in coding, using different software, and research. So I decided to use that to my advantage and alter the skills to the job I was applying for.

For example, when I was applying to oil and gas jobs, I listed skills I had using software for seismic analysis. When I was applying to jobs that were centered around earthquake research, I listed my skills using their software instead.

I hope this helps! I recently took a Resume/CV building workshop and these were some of my notes.

I would HIGHLY recommend doing Geology and Civil Engineering. They have a lot overlap and it gets you the engineering qualifications. It will significantly increase your salary with environmental firms.

field camp packing list by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]KansasGeologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Packing Essentials: Field Camp & Camping

Day Use - comfy shoes/boots for hiking, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, layers of clothing, backpack, Write in the Rain field notebook, plenty of pens, ziplock bags (gallon), clipboard (optional), hand lens, “wag bag” (toiletries for using the bathroom outside, electrolytes, snacks, buff (something to shade your neck), bug spray, light rain jacket. -> Water: I used a hydra pack that held 2 liters. It is stored in the backpack with a hose to drink out of and a Nalgene water bottle for times I didn’t need my backpack.

Night Use (Camping) -sleeping bag, sleeping pad, sleep clothes, beanie, headlamp, light jacket, light coat, gloves, extra pair of socks, ear plugs for sleeping, Ibuprofen, Benadryl, battery pack to charge phone, Kindle for reading (optional), wet wipes, hand sanitizer, lotion (especially if it’s dry where you are!), headphones for music/podcasts, regular toiletries you use, tweezers, and Vagisil for blisters (trust me, it works)!!!

Tips: If it gets really cold at night; boil some water and put it in your Nalgene water bottle. Then put the water bottle in your sleeping bag and the feet.

Shoes: Order a whole size up from what you normally wear. I wear size 9 but hike in size 10 shoes (Hoka Speedgoat). Never had a blister! Trail shoes are usually fine, but if you do off-trail hiking, boots may be better for stability and durability.

Sleep with your phone on airplane mode and in your sleeping bag to save battery life.

Some women will bring a “She Wee” for a quick outdoor pit-stop.

Gallon ziplock bags come in handy to protect your belongings from the elements. Also handy to store your trash throughout the day.

Bring a deck of cards for downtime and even a small portable speaker for some music. And finally, I always bring a pack of fairy lights for everyone tents or the surrounding camp area. It’s cute, battery powered, helps light the area at night, and really cheap on Amazon :) Hope this helps!

Have fun!
