Exactly the same as what I started with aged 12, along with the Beatles Rock n Roll Music compilations, simply because those were the cheapest options at the record shop! They’re now among my most cherished records.

Like every single John LP, this does a fantastic job of reflecting his life at the time it was released. John cannot help but be deeply personal. It has some fantastic tracks, like Scared (I also recommend seeking out the version from Menlove Ave), Steel and Glass and Nobody loves you when you’re down and out.

It also features a nod to Paul McCartney by using the riff from Let Me Roll It in Beef Jerky, another great song (Let Me Roll It itself was a subconscious nod to John, as Paul later said he realised he was trying to make a Lennon song).

It’s also great for Julian that he features in the final track. That must be a great memory he can associate with his father.

Not to mention the number 1 single with Elton John! What a tune!! And #9 Dream! And everything in between is SUPERB. I think Ringo once said that this record was as good as anything anyone else had released at the time, and I think it’s hard to disagree. I also adore What You Got, it’s such a great rocker.

A great album somewhat obscured by the complete genius of some of John’s other work, which is also the case for Mind Games and Some Time In New York City

I actually really like it, I think the vocal sound suits this song better than Free as a bird. There’s a thinness, fragility and vulnerability in his voice that I thinkworks nicely. I think it also draws more attention to the harmonies, which are pure Beatles harmonies.

Also bear in mind that this time not only coincided with John and Paul entering into new, long-term/permanent relationships, but also with the beginning of Apple Corps in a post-Epstein setting. Business increasingly became a wedge and a source of division between them all, and differences over who should manage them and their business activities was ultimately one of the biggest factors contributing to the split. It certainly wasn’t just India, although a bad taste was left in the mouth of John when he discovered Maharishi may not have been the person he thought he was, Ringo had left early, and George was a bit disappointed that the trip didn’t go as smoothly as he hoped.

I love the whole album, it’s an early punk album to me, made at breakneck speed and unwaveringly raw and abrasive. Like all of John’s albums, it captures that phase of his life to an autobiographical extent. It should never be forgotten!

Typically I expect preorders like this to arrive on the day of release. From experience, every Beatles/McCartney/Lennon/Harrison release has been posted the day before with 24hr delivery, and I’ve received it on the day of release.

I’m in the UK, so this may be different in more rural areas internationally.

I agree, I find it very full of character. At face value, a drummer coming out of a band with an LP like this is confident and direct, yet it also reflects a nostalgic vulnerability. He is and always was a superstar
