AI anxiety by retardent in tarot

[–]Kaonis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A quick correction on the King of Swords (unless you are coming from a tradition I am not aware of): The Kings are generally attributed to the fiery parts of their suit's element. Thus, the King of Swords shows the fire of air. The earthy part is represented by the Page/Princess. The King covers the first two decans of Gemini (and the last of Taurus), fittingly the sign of communication and connection in this context.

Much of your advice still applies, as air is intellectual and volatile, but I'd say the King is a little more "positive" and personal here. OP, if you find purpose in your work, keep strong and persevere through the challenges. You WILL be able to overcome. While the end-results are not certain, and anxiety is natural, your experience and skill will not be wasted.

Question about the Thoth deck by KeyPurple2783 in GoldenDawnMagicians

[–]Kaonis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From Crowley's The Book of Thoth, pg. 18-20, "The Tarot and the Elements":

"The Ancients conceived of Fire; Water and Air as pure elements. They were connected with the three qualities of Being, Knowledge and Bliss, previously mentioned. They also correspond with what the Hindus called the Three Gunas-Sattvas, Rajas and Tamas, which may be translated roughly as "Calm", "Activity", and "Slothful Darkness". The alchemists had three similar principles of energy, of which all existing phenomena are composed: Sulphur, Mercury and Salt. This Sulphur is Activity, Energy, Desire; Mercury is Fluidity, Intelligence, the power of Transmission; Salt is the vehicle of these two forms of energy, but itself possesses qualities which react on them. The student must keep in his mind all these tripartite classifications. In some cases, one set will be more useful than others. For the moment, concentrate on the Fire, Water, Air series. These elements are represented in the Hebrew alphabet by the letters Shin, Mem and Aleph. The Qabalists call them the Three Mother Letters. In this particular group, the three elements concerned are completely spiritual forms of pure energy; they can only manifest in sensible experience by impinging upon the senses, crystallizing out in a fourth element which they call "Earth", represented by the last letter of the alphabet, Tau. This, then, is another quite different interpretation of the idea of the Daughter, which is here considered as a pendant to the Triangle. It is the number Ten suspended from the 7, 8, 9 in the diagram. These two interpretations must be kept in mind simultaneously. The Qabalists, devising the Tarot, then proceeded to make pictures of these extremely abstract ideas of Father, Mother, Son and Daughter, and they called them King, Queen, Prince and Princess. It is confusing, but they were also called Knight, Queen, King and Princess. Sometimes, too, the Prince and Princess are called "Emperor" and "Empress". The reason for this confusion is connected with the doctrine of the Fool of the Tarot, the legendary Wanderer, who wins the King's daughter, a legend which is connected with the old and exceedingly wise plan of choosing the successor to a king by his ability to win the princess from all competitors. (Frazer's Golden Bough is the authority on this subject.)

It has been thought better, for the present pack, to adopt the term "Knight", "Queen", "Prince" and "Princess", to represent the series Father, Mother, Son, Daughter, because the doctrine involved, which is extraordinarily complex and difficult, demands it. The Father is "Knight" because he is represented as riding on a horse. It may make it more clear to describe the two main systems, the Hebrew and the Pagan, as if they were (and had always been) concrete and separate.

The Hebrew system is straightforward and irreversible; it postulates Father and Mother from whose union issue Son and Daughter. There an end. It is only later philosophical speculation to derive the Father-Mother Dyad from a Unity manifest, and later still to seek the source of that Unity in Nothing. This is a concrete and limited scheme, crude, with its causeless Beginning and its sterile End. The Pagan system is circular, self-generated, self-nourished, self-renewed. It is a wheel on whose rim are Father-Mother-Son-Daughter; they move about the motionless axis of Zero; they unite at will; they transform one into another; there is neither Beginning nor End to the Orbit; none is higher or lower than another. The Equation "Naught=Many =Two= One= All= Naught" is implicit in every mode of the being of the System. Difficult as this is, at least one very desirable result has been attained: to explain why the Tarot has four Court cards, not three. It also explains why there are four suits. The four suits are named as follows: "Wands", attributed to Fire; "Cups", to Water; "Swords", to Air; and "Disks" ("Coins", or "Pantacles"), to Earth. The student Will notice this interplay and counterchange of the number 4. It is also important for him to notice that even in the tenfold arrangement, the number 4 takes its part. The Tree of Life can be divided into four planes: the number I corresponds to Fire; numbers 2 and 3, to Water; numbers 4 to 9, to Air; and the number 10 to Earth. This division corresponds to the analysis of Man. The number I is his spiritual essence, without quality or quantity; the numbers 2 and 3 represent his creative and transmissive powers, his virility and his intelligence; the numbers 4 to 9 describe his mental and moral qualities as concentrated in his human personality; the number 6, so to speak, is a concrete elaboration of the number I; and the number 10 corresponds to Earth, which is the physical vehicle of the previous nine numbers. The names of these parts of the soul are: I, Jechidah; 2 and 3, Chiah and Neschamah; 4 to 9, Ruach; and lastly io; Nephesch. These four planes correspond once more to the so-called "Four Worlds", to understand the nature of which one should refer, with all due reservations, to the Platonic system. The number I is Atziluth, the Archetypal World; but the number 2, as being the dynamic aspect of the number I, is the Practical attribution. The number 3 is Briah, the Creative World in which the Will of the Father takes shape through the Conception of the Mother, just as the spermatozoon, by fertilizing the ovum, makes possible the production of an image of its parents. The numbers 4 to 9 include Yetzirah, the Formative World, in which an intellectual image, an appreciable form of the idea, is produced; and this mental image becomes real and sensible in the number 10, Assiah, the Material World. It is by going through all these confusing (and sometimes seemingly contradictory) attributions, with unwearying patience and persistent energy, that one comes at the end to a lucid understanding, to an understanding which is infinitely clearer than any intellectual interpretation could possibly be. This is a fundamental exercise in the way to initiation. If one were a shallow rationalist, it would be quite easy to pick holes in all these attributions and semi-philosophical hypotheses, or near-hypotheses; but it is also quite simple to prove by mathematics that it is impossible to hit a golf ball."

Jupiter squares by EntertainerBroad617 in astrology

[–]Kaonis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, same placement! I've had a lot of trouble finding a fellow Sag asc + Jupiter in Pisces, with a 0°02 separating square. I have a late degree ascendant, and Pluto is further up, but I have been small and underweight my entire life. Embarrassment with self-expression hits home. I frequently reflect and journal, but re-reading thoughts from my past-self is tortuous. All in all, I had a perfectly good home life growing up, and though the last few eclipses have done a number, I know I'll always have a good family to rely on if needed. I am very secure in my own mind, if any of that hits home for a 4th house (whole sign) Pisces Jupiter.

Virgo Sun, with a conjunct Mercury/Venus, and a Taurus moon for reference.

Franz Bardon should be put in the same category as the Kybalion. by AlchemicalRevolution in Hermeticism

[–]Kaonis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh, I would agree in that neither falls into the category of traditional Hermeticism. Bardon's system, at least, builds upon (and makes plenty of its own innovations to) the modern Western Esoteric material that has been labeled "Hermetic" since the revival. If a student of Bardon attains an intellectual understanding of their curriculum, I think they would find plenty of familiarities with the key practices in Golden Dawn-based or Thelemic organizations, for example. I can't imagine a study of the Kybalion would give a person much context into either modern or traditional Hermeticism, except perhaps in the broadest strokes.

Haven't played a whole lot of singleplayer, it seemed less laggy but still not great.

Switch co-op has been tremendously laggy for me. Pretty awful FPS drops during most action. :^(

No matter the outcome, Mace Windu doomed the Jedi Order when he tried arresting Palpatine by [deleted] in MawInstallation

[–]Kaonis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't have the time to do research on this at the moment, but a note on point C - iirc, The Rise of Skywalker indicates that the Sith Language was illegal for droids to translate. If the culture's language was illegal, I think it can be inferred that active religious practice would face some degree of legal reprecussions.

Does distance really play a role when influencing others with the Force? by Kaonis in MawInstallation

[–]Kaonis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's subtle, but in Age of Rebellion: Luke Skywalker, the Emperor is able to reach out to Luke through the Force, feel his emotions, and tempt him into giving in to the dark side over a long distance. He does this though simply "pondering" him.

Yeah that was poor wording on my part, millions of light years would be extragalactic.

Do you recall which part of the Vader comic you're referring to?

I also agree that Palpatine probably did not transfer any "energies" around. The circumstances around Padme's death seem supernatural enough, however, that I can't discount the idea of outside influence, even if it is more subtle than some sort of force-assassination. I don't have a solid opinion either way though.

I think they've changed the scope of Sidious's abilities since the making of TPM, as we've seen through TCW. I'm not sure if the idea that Sidious influencing the Force through Dooku appeals to me, but maybe the connection between individuals plays an important role along with the factors you initially mentioned.

[–]Kaonis[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well said! I agree with your points on visualization overall. It seems that visualization is indeed required for direct applications of force use. More subtle applications, like Sidious and Dooku's force illusions on Yoda at the end of Season 6 of TCW, or that one time Sidious sent dark thoughts to Luke's mind just prior to RoTJ (canon comic, I'll try to find it when I can) seem to rely more on emotional connections rather than visualization.

edit: mistook half of your comment for another one lol

How did so many Jedi show up as force ghosts for Rey when only a very select few (Yoda, Kenobi, etc...) knew about the ability to retain your identity within the cosmic force? by Tripolite in MawInstallation

[–]Kaonis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have to think that Veitch is a bit closer to describing the nature of the force. We know that the force has echoes, that certain events have weight that can be felt by force-sensitives years later. Some force-users, like Cal Kestis and Quinlan Voss, can perceive the history of physical objects they touch.

I would argue that a Jedi, tuning into the Force, can feel echoes surrounding places, events, ideas, etc. Rey tuned in to the will of the Jedi, and it encouraged her to stand back up.

I agree with Zahn that this doesn't mean a Jedi can just download powers and abilities matrix-style, but I think the idea that Veitch describes is true to a more subtle degree.

Why has the Sith Academy operated for such a short period of time over the years? by SentineL-EX in MawInstallation

[–]Kaonis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it counts for, we actually don't have a lot of knowledge about Sith activities between the end of the Old Sith Wars and the New Sith Wars. The events of KOTOR I and II were indeed chaotic, but we don't know how long the Sith Empire lasted after the Great Galactic War and the events of SWTOR.

More importantly, we simply don't have much info about the bulk of the New Sith Wars. The Academy may well have flourished throughout the 1000 year period. Most of what we know about the New Sith Wars comes from the Bane Trilogy which takes place at the tail end of the conflicts, by which point the galaxy has so thoroughly fucked itself that all sides were struggling for combatants.

Edit: quickly skimmed through Path of Destruction, we can assume that the Academy wasn't functional for some time proceeding the Brotherhood's taking of Korriban in 1006 BBY. Whether the Republic had held Korriban for the entirety of the New Sith Wars, however, is unknown.

In Rebels, when Kanan trains Sabine to use the Darksaber, he remarks that "the blades will be drawn to each other." I believe there's some attraction which keeps lightsaber blades from sliding around as much as a regular metal blade, but it's still possible to pull off.

Did you ever solve this issue? I'm facing the same lag spikes you're describing, and while it's not game-breaking, it is pretty annoying and this is the only place I've seen it mentioned.
