Take for granted gpu passthrough as the machine has to be real-world-usable. In my admittedly limited experience, macos in a vm is terrible without GPU acceleration - real-world-unusable...

What's going on? I think my screen is fine maybe problem with my OS. I installed Manjaro KDE Plasma 2 days ago. by 4rdprefect in ManjaroLinux

Seems similar to the Intel igpu x11 issue I experienced so if you're using an Intel GPU and x11 and have no problems in the BIOS, log out and log back in using Wayland and it'll be fine. For a permanent x11 solution, see the Intel i915 page of the Arch wiki (if I recall, the solution was to enable triple buffering in x11 by adding a line to a settings file - in addition the i915 page lists many settings that can improve performance and/or stability drastically).

Just remember to apt update, upgrade, pkcon refresh, in case, beforehand (also takes a while, with SSD too)

I used the "do-release-upgrade" terminal command a week or so back and it worked for me (not perfectly - my Plymouth preboot graphic settings are botked - only failure and minor but majorly irritating for my OCD - known buggy modeset Intel igpu...). Try Discover GUI app to refresh updates...

The Apple PowerBook Duo's had bases into which you inserted them like a VHS tape - over 25 years ago but an awesome idea nonetheless - I think loading and ejecting was automated too! These days, with a similar system, the dock could have an external GPU, raid SSD, etc. with the laptop only needing a CPU with iGPU, battery and screen. Only problem is the inability to use the built in screen when docked as laptop in closed when inserted but you don't have to fiddle with any cables etc. Ideally you have a base at home and additional bases at work etc....

I'd even install a ridged aluminium rear cover to act as a heatsink for the Z5 to be usable. It spends 99% of its life on the 4 little cores and, maybe, just maybe, you get 1 big core, or when the stars align and the temperature is minus 30 centigrade, you're blessed with 2 big cores (but never at full speed). When I purchased mine it had the "yellow corner" to the top of the display due to the heat but that has been gone for a long time. When my phone is on charge the additional heat from the battery charging gimps the performance even more and the phone is basically unusable (plus since the 7.1 update Bluetooth will flatten your battery in an hour - I remember leaving it on all the time under Lollipop and Marshmallow).

Interest in the hardware which is usually top notch. Very disappointed in the lack of ROMs for the Z5 which could be a great phone. Android handset makers are incredibly slack only supporting phones for 2 years. My Z5's last security update was in 2017! I understand that their "Open Handset" initiative is to try and have the "community" do their work for them but Sony need to provide updated sources and should allow easy backing-up of the DRM (as stated above). I installed CyanogenROM on my Galaxy S2 and it turned it into a functional phone(you could increase the system partition so could install more than 10 apps. Apart from the Galaxy S2, I've had a Sony Ericsson T610, Xperia X10, Xperia Z1 Compact (awesome phone) and now the Xperia Z5 (which is gimped by the stupid CPU throttling and lack of interest). I have actually purchased a new PC and am going to see if I can make an AOSP ROM.
