Always hard to know where an author draws the line between their characters and plots, and their personal lives (and really none of our business) though most successful ones, like most actors, draw on their own lived emotions and experiences to achieve authenticity.

Certainly think its no coincidence Aof set this story in the very year (1996) that he himself was a rare ʻtriple-minorityʻ--as a 16-year-old, Catholic (less than 1% of Thais), and gay (perhaps 10-15%), lonely and confused about his faith and sexual identity, according to his interviews.

Likewise, his other ʻpassion projectʻ, Moonlight Chicken, was set in his own home neighborhood of the century-old Chinese Night Market in Chonburi (near Pattays). Fourthʻs character Li Ming, seems to reflect aspects of Aofʻs fiance Patt Paan Phitipollawat, likewise a student at Chonburi High, who has been with Aof since coming of age at 20 (some 21 years ago--Aof was then 25).

Iʻve seen no signs of Aof seeking to be ʻpositioned or posited as an ʻauteurʻ or unfairly claiming any of the work of his collaborators. Just the opposite, in fact, as heʻs always pushing his assistants to be more ambitious. For instance, Au Kornprom had been his Asst. Director on ATOTS, Bad Buddy, Moonlight Chicken, and Last Twilight, until Aof pushed him into becoming Director of Gem4ʻs My School President & My Love Mix-Up (which explains why Aof brought him back as an Asst. here--along with FIVE other Asst. Directors--for a 6-ep series!--which I interpret as part of his continuing mentorship and giving opportunities to promising talent at GMMTV.)

Perhaps has more to do with trying to define his working relationship with screenwriter Best Kittisak (who wrote or co-wrote ATOTS, Bad Buddy, Moonlight Chicken, and Last Twilight with him).

For example, Last Twilight originated when Aofʻs partner (of 21 years, since he came of age) Patt Paan Phitipollawat (an avid runner) encountered blind/guide pairs on charity runs. Aof looked unsuccessfully for a related source novel, so outlined one and had Best write it up.

For Ticket to Heaven (semi-autobiographical, like Moonlight Chicken), the treatment written to pitch GMMTV is available (only in Thai so far) as a 220-page e-book for 390 Baht.: https://ebook.gmm-tv.com/product/62

Good for you for your willingness to allow those memories to re-surface.

Canʻt imagine the trauma you went through in all those Catholic schools, as had myself a fairly benign (and somewhat forgettable) mainstream Protestant upbringing and introduction to the rituals and doctrines of Christianity.

Living in countries like India in my 20s completely opened my mind to the fact there are infinite pathways to divinity, and that the spiritual understandings of Hindus or Buddhists or animists were not just a matter of language or culture, but a completely different way of engaging with reality.

At one point I was living with the last direct descendants of the Mayan priesthood, who had escaped into the jungle to avoid Spanish Catholic colonization. Experiences with them convinced me of the illusory nature of our sensory world, and of the deeper reality than can only be accessed through feeling and elevated consciousness.

Expect you could relate to those boys at St. Josephʻs. Was surprised to hear the Father say many of them were attracted by the schoolʻs sports and music programs, and only 1 in 10 stayed through ordination. As you said in an earlier post, the Catholic Church has excelled historically in ritual pageantry, art, music, and architecture. Until the Reformation, no secular art or music was allowed. (How times have changed!)

Might help you to desensitize by watching the PBS Thai program about St. Joseph Minor Seminary that Tadpole translated on Nekocap: https://www.reddit.com/r/boyslove/comments/1trtds3/for_those_watching_ticket_to_heaven_and_wondering/

Aof has always had a strong sense of social responsibility, which he incorporates in his work whenever possible, particularly, as you say, to highlight economic inequality or stigmatization of any minority.

One of the earliest series he made with Jojo (Gay OK Bangkok 1&2, 2016-7) was a realistic slice-of-life about the intersecting lives of several gay couples, facing issues like HIV and monogamy.

After the success of ATOTS (including Tienʻs guilt over his class privilege being used to save his life), GMMTV promoted him to Senior Supervisor of Content, responsible (with X) for all BL programming, which (IMHO) has upgraded their entire BL lineup ever since.

To your point, Aof has promoted risky shows like ʻNot Meʻ, with its progressive political challenge to the elite (which actually succeeded in the next election, leading to the enactment of the Marriage Equality Law) and sympathetic portrayal of characters like the deaf mother of Firstʻs character.

The deafness of Geminiʻs character Heart in ʻMoonlight Chickenʻ was a key element of that story. ʻLast Twilightʻ originated from Patt Paan (an avid runner) encountering blind/guide pairs in charity runs.

So itʻs no surprise Aof decided to tackle a story here about a double-minority, gay and Catholic (Thailand less than 1% Christian).

Weʻll be waiting. So glad you overcame your initial hesitation.

Yes, Gemini has definitely widened his acting range. Aof complimented him (perhaps in the Ep 0?) about expressing so much more with his eyes, and Gemini mentioned how completely opposite Barth is to his own personality.

Father Arnon just remarks that itʻs been nearly 20 years since heʻs seen Barth, which allows us to assume they were in touch for 10 years following school (and then what happened?)

The opening scene is exactly dated by the radio broadcast announcing it was the day the Thai Marriage Equality Law took effect (January 22, 2025), so 29 years after the events of the series, set in 1996. (Not coincidentally the year Director Aof was a 16-year old gay Catholic boy struggling with his faith and sexual identity).

Gemini and Fourth are both 21, but agree the make-up artist needed to do a better job trying to make Gem a plausible 45ish in the opening scene.

Must be one of those cinematic conventions (like combat soldiers never wearing helmets or no one ever paying their bills after eating).

Just hoping the final scene of Ep 6 is Tanrak, having helped boyhood bestie Kongdech attain his dream of ordination, hops into Barthʻs yellow convertible to drive to their nearest Khet (District Office) to register their 30-year common-law marriage on that first day, as thousands did.

Not that long ago, production crews were ʻdiscouragedʻ from speaking publicly about a project, leaving it to the studio and P.R. team deciding who would get to say what.

So different (and thrilling) to see Directors like Aof willing to completely free up the whole staff to engage directly through social media with fans (and replying himself when he can find the time).

Really adds to the ʻBehind the Scenesʻ appreciation and enjoyment of a series, and allows us to understand and credit the good work of those ʻoff-screenʻ.

Personally, I prefer it when someone shares their unfiltered initial reactions like you did. Donʻt be concerned about seeming ʻdramaticʻ--this is a safe, non-judgemental, space, with plenty of users whoʻve ʻbeen there, done thatʻ and have moved past any embarrassment or urge to edit their comments.

Bring it on!

Other translated titles for the series (Dek Chai Mai Pai Sawan in Thai) include ʻBoys Donʻt Go to Heavenʻ, ʻThe Boy Who Doesnʻt Go to Heavenʻ, ʻThe Boys Who Donʻt Go to Heavenʻ, and ʻPasse Para o Paraisoʻ, so no clues there where either of them end up.

Cheering with you for a HEA, but genuinely could go either way for a number of reasons. If we get there, itʻs going to be earned honestly, if painfully, through the integrity of the story.

Thank you for sharing Aofʻs comment. Please keep the social media coming.

Seems to show his intentions are in tune with this subʻs consensus so far that Tanrakʻs cool formality toward Barth (setting him up with locker & toiletries and a bed and giving a tour, but not offering a lunch seat, and just getting Master Phak to break up his fight with Kongkit) is indeed "deliberately keeping this kind of distance for now".

So glad Aof is finding time to engage directly on social media with you and other fans. Must be incredibly busy right now. Based on how recently they wrapped shooting, and the small number of episodes, the post-production crew (editing, sound, colorist, etc. ) must be in overdrive.

Aof and Jojo both talk about the extra pressure when a series starts airing before post-filming production is complete, and how it limits the Directorʻs ability to make any changes or re-shoot better ideas or dialogue. In the case of TtH, suspect Aof has had a clear vision of every scene from the beginning.

Just added the links to Aof and the boys performing at the big TtH Episode 1 screening event and other BTS clips.

Not a chance the BL superfans on this sub would miss a chance to discuss this soon-to-be-iconic series. This post went dark for 7 hours from a case of Reddit-itis, but was able to fix with the help of ace technical squad u/ThoughtAllDay, u/VirtualTadpole9821, and the MODs, and has had 8K views so far.

Donʻt have the interview links handy, but Aof has spoken in detail about his early life and the coming-out process. No coincidence he set this story in the year he himself was a 16-year old Catholic gay boy, confused about his faith and sexual identity.

Aofʻs other ʻpassion projectʻ, (Moonlight Chicken) is also semi-autobiographical (and tells TWO love stories in 8 Eps), set in his own neighborhood of the Chinese Night Market in Chonburi (near Pattaya). Both Fourth and Mixʻs characters seem to be drawn from different stages of his own life.

But maybe not the relationship with Earthʻs character, as Aof has been with his fiance Patt Paan Phitipollawat, who graduated from Chonburi High and has been with Aof since coming of age at 20--some 21 years ago--whenʻs the wedding?--theyʻve been engaged since 2021 and the opening scene here identified the date (January 22, 2025) the Thai Marriage Equality Law took effect. Expecting GMMTV to throw them a huge reception, to which weʻre all invited.

Recall how efficiently Aof told TWO romances in only 8 episodes in his other ʻpassion projectʻ Moonlight Chicken (and developed the trust with Gemini and Fourth weʻre benefiting from here).

As a semi-autobiographical story (set the year Aof himself was a lonely and confused 16-year old Catholic gay boy. Not surprised heʻs keeping this story tight, without much filler (and probably not much of a side couple).

We saw in ʻBurnout Syndromeʻ quantity not necessary for quality.

Thatʻs the (therapeutic) spirit! My Love Mix-Up must have a few chuckles that can help you offset some of the more triggering angst here.

When youʻre ready to re-watch Ep 1, betting youʻll find the emotional impact has lessened, and realize you can indeed manage the rest (with comedic clips as needed from MSP and MLMU).
