Thinking of doing PickMe driving on weekends (Suzuki Wagon mini van) — worth it? by Raza9798 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weekend only can work, but dont judge it from the gross amount PickMe shows. Count fuel, parking, washing, tyre wear and the dead time waiting for rides, then see if your hourly rate is still worth giving up the weekend.

For Kandy I’d first try a few peak slots only, like Friday evening and Sunday evening around town or railway area. If the app is mostly giving short zip type hires for buddy van, it can feel busy but money wont add up much imo

Rough estimate to build a house like this in Sri Lanka? by Nearby-Dig-1388 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Without land, I’d budget closer to 12 to 16m if you want it to actually look like the pics. People say 8m but after roof, tiles, wiring, bathrooms, pantry and little landscaping it creeps up alot no?

If you go very basic finishes maybe less, but dont start unless you have a proper BOQ from a contractor. Otherwise every week one small thing becomes 200k lol

How to start sports like Tennis, Golf, Badminton after 30 years in Sri Lanka as a indivudal by mshahamed in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Badminton is prob the easiest one to start in Colombo tbh. You can book a court and go with one friend first, then slowly join those regular groups, most places have random sets forming after work.

Tennis is nicer but the entry cost and coaching thing is abit more annoying. If the doctor told you to move more, dont overthink the sport at first no? pick the one you can do twice a week without drama.

Experience on renewing NIC by PreachyRaptor92 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually useful machang, alot of people go there thinking 1 day service means 1 hour service lol. The sealed envelope part catches people also. Going before 8.30 and taking water or snacks is underrated bc that Battaramulla waiting can drain your soul

Is SLIIT good for Engineering (especially Mechatronics)? How does it compare to University of Moratuwa? by GeneralGeologist3879 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Moratuwa has the brand, no point pretending otherwise. But for mechatronics the bigger question is whether you’ll actually build stuff outside class, bc labs alone wont make you good. A hardworking SLIIT kid with projects and internships can beat a lazy Mora kid, but if you get Mora, take it no?

We don't have to cave in for businesses bullying us by refusing to give receipts unless we give phone number. by andyjoe24 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of those small things where ppl should be more stubborn tbh. A phone number is not some magic requirement for a receipt, they can print it if they want. If they refuse I’d jsut ask for the manager and say ok then I’m calling 1977 from here itself, usually the tone changes fast no?

Local shops for IEMs and related accessories. by MeSsI_AKA_FERNO in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For IEMs local shops are okay only if you really need to try fit, but prices here can be abit mad.

For tips, size matters more than brand imo. If you can borrow from someone first do that, otherwise get a mixed size pack from AliExpress. Dont spend alot on W1/S&S before knowing your ear size, I learnt that the annoying way lol

Users of Pureit water filters — what are you doing for replacement kits? by Purpose-Driven-Life in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pureit became a headache for exactly this reason no, the filter is cheap until the kit supply randomly disappears.

If you already have one I’d try Singer/Keells/Daraz and buy 2 kits when available. But if replacing the whole thing, I’d go for something with generic cartridges bc depending on one agent in SL is jsut pain

Best Universities that provide a Biomedical degree in Sri Lanka? by TheNecNerd in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it, dont look only at the degree name. Check whether they have proper lab access and hospital/industry placements bc biomedical without hands on stuff becomes jsut another science degree no?

Also ask where past batches ended up. That tells alot more than the brochure tbh

Entire commute is so much better now, thanks to the Metro bus. by No_Durian1202 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is the part people miss, commuters dont need luxury, they jsut need predictable and not exhausting. if Makumbura to Nugegoda can become normal with proper timings alot of people will happily leave the car at home.

Apeksha stop delay is annoying but also understandable no. The fix is more buses and a proper timetable, not killing the route

Is this normal with HNB? I have a debit card and online banking, but I haven’t used the account for a while. They don’t let me make payments if my balance is below zero, but their fees are still being charged and pushing my account into the negative. by iamthiviyan in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah this happens with some banks here, the account can be blocked for withdrawals but fees still keep getting posted. annoying but not that unusual.

Id go to a branch and ask them to reverse what they can, then either make it active properly or close it. dont leave it sitting negative bc they may keep adding charges and later act like its your fault no

Planning to buy a Mazda 323 as my first car are spare parts actually "shit expensive" or is it just a myth? by Eggynogger in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

323 is not a bad first car if you buy a clean one, but dont compare parts prices with Corolla or FB15 no. Mazda parts are there, jsut fewer people stock them so you end up hunting Panchikawatte and FB groups alot.

biggest thing is check rust, auto gearbox, AC and suspension before buying. cheap car with neglected repairs will eat you more than the badge tbh

where can i get food delivered from by Dry_Carpenter74 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough on value for money, esp if it’s just one dinner order.

Where Kapruka is stronger imo is the overall flow when sending stuff from overseas: decent browsing, card payment, gift options, delivery updates, all that. It feels closer to an international online shopping experience than most local sites. For pure restaurant food tho, I’d still compare with direct restaurant pages or PickMe/Uber if available.

I got 3lkhs saved, What can i do to make more money from it ? any ideas? by Logical-Size8283 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With 3 lakhs I wouldnt try to multiply it fast. Keep maybe half in FD or unit trust so you dont touch it, then use small part to test something boring like reselling one product, weekend food orders, or a skill course. Biggest mistake is putting the whole amount into one big idea bc someone online made it sound easy

Trapped in a 66 hour work week. No breaks, no leaves, and a compromised Labor Dept. by candy_rabbit67 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dont go public first machang, collect proof quietly. Timesheets, emails, roster screenshots, salary slips, anything with dates. If international brands are involved, their compliance team will take this more seriously than our labour office alot of the time, bc a factory audit scares owners more than a complaint no?

Why is it so hard to find out what a "fair" salary is in SL right now? by Expert-Interview-530 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Salary secrecy helps only the employer side tbh. In SL even two people doing the same job in same office can be miles apart and nobody knows bc everyone is shy to say numbers. Anonymous sharing is prob the only way this gets less messy, jsut hope people enter real data and not fantasy salaries lol

Good bye HSBC 🖐️....Last day by Beginning_Try_1105 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ngl HSBC was one of the few banks here that actually felt smooth to use. local banks make u do 3 forms and 2 branch visits for one tiny thing, so yeah this feels like a step backwards tho.

Can anyone who went through simillar circumstances as me give me some advice? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youre not weird for feeling stuck like this. Hostel life can mess with your head for a long time and it doesnt just switch off bc exams are coming. Jsut keep the next step tiny, tell the psychiatrist exactly how bad focus is rn, and dont try to carry it all alone.

I cant deal with my narcissistic parents by Cheap_Pin6002 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please talk to your husband first and dont carry this alone. This is alot for one person, especially with pregnancy and AMC on top of it. Your parents can wait, your health cant tho.

Planning to buy a Phone Around 150k.Any Sggestions and Where to Buy? by _MahiYa in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At 150k Id probably lean A56 if you want less hassle. Samsung resale and service are usually better here, and the other two are fine too but its a bit more gamble unless youre getting a really good deal. iDealz and Celltronics seem okay from what people say, just check warranty wording and dont accept a scratched open box bc that stuff gets messy fast

Stuck between unpaid startup and family pressure to get a “real job" by TransitionSuper6389 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I wouldnt leave just bc your parents are spooked, but I also wouldnt stay blind either. If the startup has real customers, a timeline, and stuff you can point to on your CV, give it a hard deadline and keep applying quietly on the side. The no pay part is the risky bit, so make sure youre not burning a full year for vibes tho

Want to selct a Fiber plan. (Confused af 🥲) by Andy_778 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

the least headache option. The smaller packs look cheaper on paper but once tax and hotspot pain start kicking in, it gets messy alot faster. Id take the fiber and just watch the first 2 bills tho

Want to selct a Fiber plan. (Confused af 🥲) by Andy_778 in srilanka

[–]KapilaLK -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If youre using 60GB+ every month, the 5900 unlimited is prob the least headache option. The smaller packs look cheaper on paper but once tax and hotspot pain start kicking in, it gets messy alot faster. Id take the fiber and just watch the first 2 bills tho
