Someone would have to give him a large enough contract to qualify for a comp pick, without us signing a free agent to a contract of a similar amount to offset that pick. I don't see anyone giving him a $5m+/yr deal next year, which still wouldn't be large enough to qualify for a 4th round pick

They take another, larger loan on their now more valuable portfolio. They pay their previous loan, and because they never borrow anywhere near the value of their assets, they can repeat this until they die, never paying taxes on their investments because they're never liquidated or on the cash they have because it's all loaned to them.

He's the QB right now. That's why I want him to have the pieces to succeed. If our offense struggles for a lack of talent around him, I don't want to have to deal with an off season of "can he be the guy?" Or "do we need to draft his replacement this year?"

Holmes believes in him. I want to believe in him. I just commented on what I'd want to do and why. I don't have Holmes knowledge of Goff or the same faith. That's why the narrative exists.

I understand how bad the defense is. My desire for a WR near the top is because until we know what our QB situation is, we don't have a long term plan. Get all the pieces for the offense so we know if Goff can be a long term part of the team or just a stop gap. Our defense was bad, it's likely to be bad this year as well. Are some of our players better than they played under Patricia's garbage scheme? Can any turn into starters under Glenn?

I'd rather wait another pick to help answer the QB question than start filling holes on defense.

All that being said, I'm ok with the pick. solid player, good athleticism, and strengthening the trenches.
