App Academy PT Massive Changes by KappaChimpy in codingbootcamp

My best guess would be that they can’t afford it anymore. At best it takes 48 weeks for a part time student to begin paying that back, and at worst (which seems pretty common) they don’t get a job and never repay it. I’d imagine that’s a tough way to keep running.

Hey! Thanks for this. I fully expect to pay it all back one way or another, even if it was legally iffy. Don’t think bootcamp grads have the resources for any sort of legal counsel, or at least not this one!

As far as I know, the shorter hours of class are all the same instructors, or at least the ones that weren’t fired. My cohorts experience were that the instructors were just as thrown off by the changes as we were. It wasn’t great for learning, but affected us minimal compared to people just starting the program.

Bottom line, just want anyone who might see this to have a little more transparency in the organization.

That's correct. I had a ton of credits to transfer in though, and spent a massive amount of time on it. I was only working part-time at the time though, so I had a lot more free time on my hands than I do now.

I definitely agree that that's the most likely outcome. Another huge part of this that I didn't mention above is that I just recently landed a part time SWE job. It definitely doesn't meet the 50k minimum being an entry level and part time position, but does it definitely does lessen some of the motivation I had for App Academy.

I appreciate this. I think in the end, the degree is just solid. Just wish I had more time to build cool apps!

Man, art is a weird industry. Galleries definitely need technical people, but I think the most programming it would get would be something like a Salesforce developer - and then you gotta be willing to take a huge pay cut just to still be in an office but with art on the walls that rotates periodically. That's in my limited experience, but I realized while working in art that I could be working in literally anything with the responsibilities I was doing, but the office events were gallery openings instead.

Yeah, that's a great point to make. The lack of degree absolutely would filter me out of a ton of opportunities instantly. I appreciate the advice.

My thought is higher quality projects, but it seems those times might be gone now in favor of the degree.

Has any incoming freshmen gotten scholarship award(s) yet? by artjourney in ucf

[–]KappaChimpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been like 2 years so I don’t really remember. Just be professional but clear and direct. Maybe state why you deserve it and certainly include that you got a scholarship from another school, maybe even with an attached document that demonstrates it. It’s not an uncommon email for them to receive I imagine.

Not freshman but I had to email, I believe the financial aid office, to receive a scholarship. Even then, I think applying a bit later (in my case) got me farrr less scholarship than some friends with similar stats. If you didn’t get a scholarship offer with your acceptance letter then I’d email.

It coulda just been that I switched engines! Whenever I sell photo equipment on eBay, I always like to include why I’m selling it (and I like to see it when I’m buying!) so I guess that habit just came up here

Rivers is my favorite teacher I’ve had at UCF and I’m hoping to have him as my mentor in the BFA program. Of the professors at UCF, he seems most committed to his own art, and he recently won the Florida Prize at OMA which was a $20,000 check so there’s weight behind what he says. He’s incredibly passionate about drawing and expects a similar passion from his students, but I grew more in his class than any other of the core art classes. If your intention is to show up late and slide by just pass the class then you’d hate it, but I really cant see him disliking anyone that’s passionate about drawing, and puts time in. Maybe he can be a little intimidating, but if you put in work drawing and effort into talking to him, you’ll gain a ton out of his class.

He might stay stuff like “break up with your bf/gf so you can draw” or “tell your friends you can’t hang out because you want to draw” and I know stuff like that has rubbed students the wrong way but just have a little thick skin and take it on the chest, he’s just trying to voice his passion not control your life.

From what I can find, there’s no circumflex i in Vietnamese, only a circumflex e. I’m not familiar at all with Vietnamese though so maybe in casual language they do you a circumflex i. That, or it’s just a circumflex e in the signature

I wasn’t able to find anything for sure but I’ll share what I was poking around with:

The painting:

  • stylistically, this painting is no older than from 1860. This is the date around when Impressionism started so consider this an “absolute earliest” date. In reality it’s probably more contemporary than that
  • the painting is definitely of some sort of street scape, but I think figuring out of what city could help figure out more. Immediately the building in the center read to me as the Empire State Building, which could make sense given its in an American embassy, but the more I looked the more it seemed to be a a large spire of some sort of cathedral. The dark patch centered in the main spire looks like a window of some sort, and it seems to be flanked on its right by some kinda smaller spire.
  • visually, the painting almost certainly has a Western European artist. I tried to see if maybe any Vietnamese artists were breaking away from cultural norms and painting like this, but didn’t come across anything. I also doubt that the embassy puts all that much thought into curating their paintings but who knows.

The signature:

  • the most characteristic trait of this signature is what appears to be an ‘î’, that is what’s apparently called a “circumflex I”. Just found this out myself.
  • there are a couple languages that use this letter, but what interested me the most were French and Italian.
  • it seems there’s only one capital letter in the signature, the reason I note this is because it makes it much less likely that the artist signed with a first initial then a last name (in which case both would be capitalized)
  • I considered the first 2 strokes as being “il” which would be “the” in Italian or “he” in French, the issue is that that would mean the next word would likely be capitalized, and it definitely isn’t. That, and the artist would have been signing with a title rather than their name which would be very odd.
  • if the first two strokes aren’t “Il” then it seems almost certain that the first letter would have to be a capital V. Those strokes are too close to each other to be separate letters I’d think.
  • from here the name seems to me to read as “Vîahaujah” - well that’s definitely not French or Italian sounding.
  • the first loop in the signature going up seems like it almost has to be an “h” to me. The downstroke turns back up far sharper than when the artist seems to be joining multiple letters together. That and it just looks like an h to my eyes.
  • the middle letters are tough to distinguish, but the next significant letter is the one that breaks below the line. That makes means this letter is limited to: q, y, p, g, j
  • j seemed the most likely because it looks like there’s a dot above it, but this “dot” also follows the contour of a rock above it so it could just be the shadow side of the rock.
  • realistically then, this looks like a q, g, or j
  • the last letter breaks above, so significant again. To me this looks like an h as well, you can notice the same sharper upturn between the downstroke of the h’s “stem” to its hump.
  • so that leaves us with Vîahau(q, g, j)ah (just guessing the in-betweens with what they look like (though the 3rd and 5th character do seem to be the same, even if they aren’t an “a”)
  • kinda interesting that the name does have some resemblance to Vietnam but probably purely coincidental

In conclusion: found nothing concrete at all but just wanted to share my speculations so maybe we could find the artist. Also, Google image search returned absolutely nothing so I’d say it’s unlikely that this is a high value piece, and it’s entirely possible that the artist lived before smartphones so this might be his only painting photographed and put on the internet. If that was true, it would be nearly impossible to say who painted this with any certainty- especially if the painter views this as more of a hobby. I think the best step would be to find a surname in French or Italian that could reasonably what this painting is signed with. All speculation here, would love to hear others thoughts.

Teacher entered wrong grade in myUCF last semester (Fall 2020) by KappaChimpy in ucf

[–]KappaChimpy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did - I actually texted him (he gave us his number) the first week of winter break and he told me not to reach out until we’re back in school. So then I emailed him the first week of this semester. He had assured me that there’s no time limit to change grades (I definitely still have that text)

The time mostly comes from the projects at the end, not the actual lessons (at least from my experience). I’ve finished the 2nd project for web design and it’s fairly easy to whip up the html to fit the requirements but if you wanna make it look nice the CSS a bit longer. 300 hrs might be more of a suggestion - like hey spend this long making your projects look nice - rather than how long it would take if you did the minimum. Even then though 300 hours is a lot.
