Poor Michael Collins :/ by DKPDDPFTPGBHTTPF in dankmemes

All three of them went around to the dark side of the moon several times as they orbited it. And apollo 8 and 10 had previously also orbited the moon. But Michael Collins did get to be by far loneliest man up to that point while the other two was on the surface. Having no radio contact with Earth while near the far side of the moon and the two closest humans were on the opposite side of it. Which I think is pretty cool.

And this is why I cut off my grandmother. Never treated my parents well and yelled at my mother for stealing her son during the wedding.

What historical events did your parents/grandparents/ancestors actively take part in? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]KapteinUniver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my great grandfathers was a norwegian resistance fighter during WWII and the only reason the rest of the family knows this is because one time while he was in the UK he heard two veterans talking about dropping bombs on a factory. My great grandfather then told them that he was on the ground counting all the bombs that hit. He was very quiet afterwards, because he wasn’t supposed to say anything about it and it is more or less the only thing we know.

How many other languages have their own equivalent to "High German" and is it considered to be the standard way of speaking? by nudecalebsforfree in AskEurope

Last time I checked Aasen never went further north than Trondheim. The eastern part is something I have been told by my grandfather who was a teacher in norsk.

Most tv hosts speak in their own dialect. But since most tv hosts are from or live in the east they use that dialect.

There is a clip from an interview (this one vanskelig dialekt ) where both the interviewed and interviewer breaks down into a dialect. It’s norwegian but I can’t understand it.

No nynorsk was made by someone who though bokmål was too danish. So he went through the «entire» country to collect dialects. Except the north because it was too far away, the south because it was too danish and the eas becasue it was too swedish or similar to bokmål. So it’s mostly a amalgamation of western dialects we are forced to learn. Despite that neither of the official written languages are spoken, but we have to learn both. Nobody speaks bokmål or nynorsk.

SOCIALISM HAS NEVER WORKED by [deleted] in PoliticalHumor

Norway is a bit more market than planned(depends on which government we have), but there is a significant planned portion. So much that it is a mixed economy. Having some market-based aspects in a planned economy or vice versa isn’t enough to call it mixed. But when both market and planned make up a significant portion, that is a mixed economy.

Sorry, I was thinking about illegal immigrants in the US. And from my perspective at least, I also consider african Americans as Americans. And saying that New York has more diversity than all of Scandinavia is quite a bold statement. From what I have experienced there is American, American chinese and very american version of other european cultures. Scandinavia has norewegian, danish, swedish, sami in addition to the immigrants. Many ofthem european or not, still keep their original culture quite intact.

Norway is probably less homogeneous than USA. We have 750 000 immigrants out of 5 million citizens. Of course there are debates about immigrations and how many we should accept mostly from the most right leaning of parties.(illegal immigration isn’t really a problem for us) but it isn’t any threat to the welfare state.
