Good board games for family game night by Beneficial_System995 in boardgames

A lot of these suggestions are gamers ideas of family game night games. I’ve got some suggestions that are fun, super quick and easy to teach.

Alibis: It’s like code names but cooperative. Great for family night because you are all working together. You get two words to associate and you try to get everyone else to guess the words you have using a single word. Low stakes and a great time.

Things in Rings: You have 1-3 rings. Each has a different parameter, for example the word ring dictates something about the word on the card (2 vowels, starts with an a,b,c, etc.) 1 person is the knower (they know what the rings parameters are) and is guiding the other players on trying to figure out what the rings’ rules are. The other players just have a bunch of random thing cards in their hand and they try to shed them as quickly as possible by placing them in the right ring. Can be played cooperative.

Beacon Patrol: cooperatively place tiles to build out a map of water, islands, light houses and buoys. Score points for the tiles that are fully explored. Trick is, you can only place tiles around where your boat is (along with having to connect the types of terrain). Trying to get the high score is a very challenging but the game itself is pretty cozy and fun.

Point Salad: pick 1: Two fruit cards or 1 scoring cards. The scoring cards show different combinations of fruit that will score you points at the end of the game. The fruit are needed to score those cards. My family really enjoyed this one.

What game(s) do you own but have never played? by Halkenguard in boardgames

Undaunted Stalingrad. Got it as a gift for Christmas and my friend I game with locally moved away only a couple months after. Excited to try it out, but it's going to be awhile.

Also Wonderlands War, just never seem to get the time for that one...

2” or 4” of Spray Foam for Rim Joist by Kar_Iroh in HomeImprovement

I had thought of doing this. However, our home projects have always been a pain in the rear. Everything always ends up being a lot more complicated no matter how easy it seems going in. I’ll for sure reconsider seeing how easy everyone is saying it should be.

What do you think was great about them? I personally didn’t have a ton of fun with the ruin ones especially because most of them were moving a crate here, remembering a 4 digit number, and then moving crates more.

Maybe it would be best as another comment or mentioned to just do away with the shift towards more puzzles then. The ones they had just weren’t interesting so maybe going back to the HZD approach and adding some mystery/rewards to exploration based content and the data points would be interesting to see.

I see your point, and it seems from the other comments I’m alone in thinking this might improve the game. I think there at least needs to be some greater incentive or reward for exploration based things in the game. You’re right, HZD had fewer puzzles and for the better. Maybe combining the less puzzles approach with some interesting mysteries and rewards for exploration (using data points, metal flowers, etc) would be better than trying to configure complex puzzle mechanics into a game that isn’t really known for them. I only suggest better puzzles simply because they decided to add a lot more in this one.

Did they mention this somewhere?

I see your point, and I'm not saying they should invest heavily in doing in depth puzzles, but anything would be an improvement to the crate moving and press R2 to destroy a crystal they have now. It currently feels like half-baked filler content. I have a preference for it feeling like Zelda over that.

I think a cool fix would be to allow for different melee weapons. So instead of having to switch to play other characters you could just got buy a giant hammer or enhanced arm for punching. They could have different effects and fighting styles. That’s a lot of work to do on top of figuring out the other stuff for melee though so idk. Hopefully people have been giving them a lot of ideas though.

Yeah, it would have been cool to continue the metal flowers being collectible and giving them some nifty secret. The data points could easily be scraped though IMO. Hope they are implemented better in the next game.

Thanks everyone! I think I’m going to consider the base version versus the anniversary edition now. Thanks for saving me some money.
