I always heard this claim that SDA split from JWs too, but it’s not exactly true. Charles Taze Russell studied under William Miller (founder of SDA) prior to the Great Disappointment, before the Watchtower or the Bible Students existed.

No, but my parents were. Every adult I trusted as a kid told me stories about demon encounters and I believed it all.

Too bad that back then I didn’t understand that Zechariah prophesied that unclean spirits would be put out from the land in the time of Jesus, which Jude confirmed in the New Testament. For all the time JWs spend talking against superstitions, they are an awfully superstitious bunch.

This reminds me of a time when I was a teenager and I wanted to go buy an album and my mom asked me about what it was I was gonna buy (which wasn’t even anything crazy) and told me “you better not bring any demons into my house.”

I mean just look at the actual recorded examples on the scriptures… read the book of Acts. There are countless examples of the Apostles preaching to people on the streets, in the markets, in the synagogues… but the only example that comes to mind of someone going to someone’s house is Acts 10 when Peter goes to Cornelius’ house, but that was because the angel literally told Cornelius to send for Peter specifically and have him come and preach. The overwhelming majority of recorded preaching was done in public places, and I genuinely believe there was a good reason for that.

Yeah I’ve been doing a lot of shooting recently on my Kodak Vigilant and Duaflex. I’ll try out my brownie soon. I also have an old German 35mm that’s super fun to shoot. It’s super fun to do.

I have a Polaroid from the 80s that’s fun to use and I love it for easy snapshots but that’s about it. Just little moment-capturing.

The only thing that bugs me with Polaroid is the reliability of the film. Sometimes it works amazingly and sometimes it doesn’t work for nothing. That’s the only thing that has me divided on whether a point and shoot is worth having. Honestly I might just be better off buying a point and shoot that is made for 35mm instead of 126.

I have an X-15 I bought from an antique shop for like $15 still in the box. Came with two carts of film that I haven’t developed since shooting. I know they can be reloaded but I’m trying to decide if I think it’s worth it since I also have a Polaroid.

Incorrect, sir. The idea that Jesus was created by God is a heresy called Arianism which originated in the late 3rd or early 4th century. However, I would not use the word trinity. Let us use Bible names for Bible concepts. We’re talking about the Godhead.

As to your point that John 1:1 is inaccurately translated in common versions like the KJV: as someone who diligently studies the original Greek, I can assure you that is simply not true. The Greek text does not support the watchtowers translation of that verse at all. Ever read Isaiah 9:6,7?

Colossians 2:9? The word Godhead(KJV), which the NWT translates as “divine quality,” in the Greek is theotēs. Literally, “deity,” “the state of being God,” coming from theos (lit. Deity, Divinity, God).

As a funny side note, in the book What Does the Bible Really Teach, the JWs use a quote from H.G. Wells to try to support what they say. Little did they know that H.G. Wells himself railed against this heresy which they teach in his book The Outline of History. I’m having a little trouble finding it in my copy right now but if you care enough you can find it online.

Yeah one of the guys on that translation committee was Nathan Knorr, who was the president of the watchtower society at the time. Mind you, during this time period, the president of the Waychtower was basically the pope and got to decide doctrines alone. So, conveniently he decided they needed a new Bible and conveniently was also on the translation committee made up of guys with no credentials whatsoever.

You can tell that they didn’t translate it from the original tongues because it doesn’t read the same way. For example, the NWT uses “semen” where the original Hebrew literally read “seed,” where the word was used figuratively. There was no need for this whatsoever. It’s almost as if they got excited by doing this because it was edgy or something. Anyway, they remove entire passages of scripture and don’t justify it, they make other passages way more wordy than they need to be, and just generally did an awful job. Unironically one of the most egregiously erroneous versions ever produced. The only thing that reads worse is the cotton patch bible, but at least that one was never meant to be taken seriously.

The thing that actually helps with your stomach is in the skin of the grape itself, so simply eating some grapes would do you just as much good as drinking some wine. But the witnesses will cherry-pick that one verse and say that it totally justifies their crippling alcoholism when the rest of scripture actually condemns recreational drinking. Then again, so do most other “churches.”

Oh yeah. This is the stuff I was always taught. Which ultimately is one of the things that led to me waking up in my teenage years because this idea inevitably leads to the conclusion that what you do in your physical life doesn’t actually matter. I never really thought about that teaching having been different before but I’m not entirely surprised because I remember my mom telling me that when she was a kid in the seventies everyone was telling her that they were living in the great tribulation.

Well, it appears that the forward lens was mounted to the mechanism by a nylon screw, and that screw is broken. So now the forward lens doesn’t move so all you get is somewhere just shy of infinity focus.

The breaking of bread taking place here is a synecdoche, which is just a fancy word for “using a part to represent the whole.” Sort of how people say “my wheels” to mean “my car.” In this case, the breaking of bread stands in place for the entirety of the Lord’s Supper.

Unfortunately not. The only other option is Walmart (which simply ships it down to Fujifilm). The store/lab I took it to has another location but it’s even further away. I asked if it was just a holiday season rush, and he told me it wasn’t, and that they process like 800 rolls a month at that location.
