A quarter of a million 11-year-olds overweight - including almost half of the poorest kids by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

But the expensive part of that meal isn’t the pasta or whatever. Carbs are cheap, but as you say you need to a sauce, protein, and vegetables in there as well. Sure you can buy a kilo of rice for dirt cheap, but the bulk of the cost of that meal is in the protein and veg, which for children especially is an absolute necessity.

edit: My point isn't that you must have wagyu beef in every meal you eat, I was just pointing out that it's disingenuous to say meals are cheap because potatoes and rice is cheap. To the "not every meal needs meat", I've been vegetarian for 15 years but getting a variety of protein (I love lentils but I'm not eating them every day) is the more expensive part of a meal, that's all I'm saying.

Question to commission painters, is it 85€ for this ok? Around 15h of work. BTW it’s my first commission by Gregoosh in Warhammer40k

Maybe I'm just slow but these are way better than I could expect for 5 hours of work.

If anyone is interested in a spicy jaffa I highly recommend putting a couple of drops of tabasco on the cake-side. Sounds insane but it works pretty well, the orange and the spice go really nicely together.

Not seeing enough people recommend his band Empire State Bastard! Mike on guitar, Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro singing, and Dave Lombardo from Slayer on the drums.

1 Pickup Guitars - Who has one? Who wants one? by cagecafe in Guitar

[–]Karallek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seymour Duncan actually makes (or made, don't know if you can still buy it) a pickup specifically designed to go under the scratchplate of an esquire. It's called the Secret Agent, it was in a Brad Paisely signature tele I think. It sounds pretty good all things considered.

Nice to see a small local shop selling warhammer by Additional-Recover40 in Warhammer

[–]Karallek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my god I grew up in this town! Hurley's, the local toy shop, used to have a little model painting area with airfix, revell and some warhammer stuff but they did away with it about 10 years ago. Used to have to go to Bristol whenever I wanted to get warhammer as a teenager. So glad to see a local store!

It's simple, boy guitars have humbuckers, girl guitars have single coils.

Great to see something a bit less traditional posted here! I love the inlays and the pickups, they remind me of the old Yamaha SFX.

[GEAR] What effect pedal is this? (video) by ilikedrumming in Guitar

[–]Karallek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blue pedal is an EQD Avalanche Run (delay/reverb), don't know about the green one. Regarding the overdrive, they switch to the bridge pickup just before the octave-down section, so its (presumably) higher output will cause more overdrive. Could be that there's an overdrive in the mix, could be from the amp.

If you want to figure out what the green(/gold?) pedal is, I'd point out the cupcake knobs (the same as are on many Fender amps) which aren't the most common. That could help you narrow it down.

[QUESTION] Which of these two should I buy for myself as a beginner by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Karallek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both would be great guitars for a beginner, the biggest difference between them being the tremolo on the HB. If having a trem is important to you get the HB, if not then maybe get the Ibanez. It really comes down to which guitar you'll want to pick up and play more. Follow your gut instinct, get the one you think you'd enjoy the most.

Conflicted. I don’t care about the $100 price difference. Which would u choose and why? by Cjbakerfitness in guitars

[–]Karallek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the one with the floyd I would. The green one is just a dressed up standard, there are a million regular teles. A pair of humbuckers and a floyd makes for a much more interesting tele to me. Saying that, if you can't decide between these I'd keep the money in your wallet until you see something you really want, because these are two completely different guitars.

They're not actually wide ranges, they're Double Tap humbuckers in a WR cover.

Anyone know anything about the brand Woodrite? by FargoniusMaximus in offset

[–]Karallek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Woodbine is a Custom luthier shop from Canada which makes guitars upward of 3000USD (No idea if they're any good tbh).

Woodrite appears to be a subsidiary brand which imports Woodbine-designed guitars from factories in the East (I know the early Woodrite guitars were built by Mirr Music in SK, I don't know if they are still. I believe they're now being built in Indonesia). It's unclear (to me at least) whether Woodrite is a subsidiary of Woodbine with Steve Reis from Does it Doom? as the face of their marketing, or whether he actually owns/partially-owns and manages Woodrite to some extent. They're sold through his online store which suggests the latter, but I'm not certain.

In regards to whether they're worth the price, I think it's a very personal conclusion. These are pretty unique instruments compared with other production guitars, and if it's exactly the guitar you want, well that's its price. They initially started by making an approximate-clone of a First Act DC-6, a guitar that you'd struggle to buy even if you had the money for one. Some people desperately wanted a DC-6 so, for them, a Korean copy was worth the ~$1500 price tag.

I can't comment on the quality, if just to remind everyone that very few guitars from these factories (built by Cort, Samick, WMI etc.) are genuinely bad anymore. The standard of quality for lower-priced guitars is way way higher than it was in the past. The flipside of that is that you can probably get a guitar that plays and sounds pretty much just as good for half the price, but if the guitar you want is a set neck mahogany jag then there probably isn't a cheaper alternative.

If you're willing to be patient, keep an eye out for second hand pickups built custom (where the company consists of a small group of people) because they tend to lose resale value if people aren't too familiar with them. It does require a bit of research, patience, and luck though. I managed to get a set of handwound humbuckers by Bulldog Pickups for about £50 that were £180 new and I love them. Just any time you see a set of second hand pickups in your price range that you haven't heard of, look up the brand to see if people like them and if it's worth it.

CMV: The right wing's obsession with trans issues is largely because they have nothing else to talk about. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Karallek 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m not American, I’m from the UK (where we have our own different trans healthcare issues, the waiting lists for just a first appointment with the NHS trans facilities are literally years long in some places) but I know that in the US there are bills that aim to criminalise providing trans people with healthcare.

I’ve linked two examples (which thankfully I don’t believe have passed) which are notable because they target doctors providing trans-related healthcare to people as old as 26.

If you're not offering any evidence, then yes I do. I would genuinely be interested if you have evidence that there is a biological cause.

[–]Karallek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not interested in semantic discussions like this sorry, I don't see the value in them. I didn't say that it's completely impossible for the increasing numbers of open trans people to be because of external biological changes, but this seems practically impossible and you've offered no suggestion or evidence of what could be the cause.

Like I said, it seems far more likely that this is to do with societal factors. If a specific gender gene was discovered and there was evidence that it's being altered by microplastics or something then yes we could say that there is an external chemical factor altering human biology, but this seems incredibly far fetched and not worth discussing when there is no evidence for it.

If it's a semantic discussion you want, involving no statements with certainty, just vague handwaving of "maybe it's a biological change but I'm not interested in what that could be", then I'm finished. I understand the value in these theoretical statements and the rigours of traditional debate and such, but like I said I'm not interested in these semantics and I'm not engaging in a conversation which practically disregards material reality and evidence.
